Groupon Exposes Customer Emails In Google Results?Again

Screen shot 2012-06-29 at 06.47.30A while back we wrote about a flaw in Groupon's email link encryption, which revealed the emails of some Groupon users when "addx" was added into a Google search of Groupon's site. We've been alerted that is still happening, with about 170 emails coming up when we searched (last time around it was less than 80). When this last happened,?Groupon director of engineering Shinji Kuwayama told us that the emails were made public because some subscribers had "pasted their deals into publicly-crawlable pages around the Web," but also that it was working on a solution to exclude those results. So why these are appearing now is unclear. We're contacting Groupon to see if there is an explanation.

Endurance athlete Palfrey begins Cuba-Florida swim

HAVANA ? Marathon swimmer Penny Palfrey set out on a record bid to traverse the Straits of Florida early today, a 103-mile (166-kilometer) unassisted swim testing the limits of human endurance and the will of the high seas.

Slathered with sunblock and lubricant to prevent chafing, the British-born Australian bade farewell to onlookers, dove headfirst into the calm, bathwater-warm seas off Havana and began stroking slowly northward with a kayaker as escort.

"There's a lot of work that's gone into this over the past year," Palfrey said, thanking her husband, her team and Cuban officials who helped facilitate the trip. "It's all coming together, and so exciting to finally get to this point where we can get started."

After her departure, a member of Palfrey's crew was keeping fans up to date via social media.

"Swimming strong. Great conditions. Some jellies, but not bad," read one tweet. By late morning she had covered 7.5 nautical miles, or 8.6 miles, as Cuba disappeared from sight.

Palfrey will have to fight through physical and mental fatigue while fending off dehydration, hypothermia and dangerous marine life. She estimates that it will take 40 to 50 hours to make the crossing, and the currents will determine where in Florida she comes onshore.

If Palfrey succeeds, she'll go in the record books as the first woman to swim the Straits without the aid of a shark cage. Instead she's relying on equipment that surrounds her with an electrical field to deter the predators.

Australian Susie Maroney made the crossing in 1997 at age 22, but with a shark cage. American Diana Nyad made two unsuccessful cageless attempts last year on either side of her 62nd birthday, but had to call them off due to a debilitating asthma attack and painful Portuguese man o' war stings. She plans to try again this summer.

Palfrey, a 49-year-old mother and grandmother, is more than a decade younger than Nyad.

She was wearing a regular sporting swimsuit instead of a wetsuit, and planned to put on a porous, non-buoyant Lycra bodysuit that provides cover down to the wrists and ankles whenever jellyfish may be a threat.

That's particularly the case at night, according to her support team of more than a dozen navigators, handlers and medical personnel who were escorting her on the 44-foot (13-meter) catamaran Sealuver.

Palfrey is no stranger to jellyfish stings, which forced her to abort two past swims in Hawaii.

A 20-year veteran of distance swimming, her personal best came last year when she completed 67 miles (108 kilometers) between Little Cayman and Grand Cayman islands.

At a news conference Thursday, Palfrey said she swam competitively in her youth but only discovered ultra-long-distance swimming later in life.

"I spent my teenage years swimming and studying, and then I've spent a lot of time raising my family and supporting my husband's business," she said. "And now I feel that it's my window in life to do something that I love to do. I don't believe that I can do it much later in life so this is my opportunity now. "

This morning she was upbeat and focused on the task at hand as she prepared to set off from the Hemingway Marina in western Havana.

Asked about the first thing she planned to do on arrival in Florida, she laughed and said, "get out of the water."

"Beautiful sea, beautiful sunrise. It's a lovely morning in Cuba," Palfrey said. "Thanks. I'm gonna get started."

HBT: Phillies make Thome available to AL teams

Jim Thome is no longer able to play first base, so now that interleague play is over, he?s limited to pinch-hitting duties. The future Hall of Famer hasn?t fared too well in that role to date, going just 1-for-16 with one homer and 11 strikeouts, so the Phillies are now open to setting him free.

Jayson Stark of ESPN.com was told by American League clubs that the Phillies have made Thome available for trade to clubs that need a designated hitter. The veteran slugger would prefer to play for the White Sox or Twins, but there?s not a clear fit with either club right now.

While Thome served a lengthy stint on the disabled list this season due to a back injury, he recently showcased what he could do if given regular at-bats out of the DH spot by hitting .333 (12-for-36) with four homers, two doubles and 14 RBI over nine games during interleague play.

Thome is only making a modest $1.25 million this season, so he?d be a worthwhile gamble for a contender. The 41-year-old is currently tied with Sammy Sosa for seventh all-time with 609 career home runs.

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Introduces The Fairmount Park ...

Philadelphia just got even more bike-friendly with the launch of a bike rental service with three pickup locations in the Fairmount Park system. (Photo by J. Smith for GPTMC)

Exciting summer news: Earlier this month, Mayor Nutter, Philadelphia Parks & Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy hosted a grand opening ceremony for Wheel Fun Rentals, a brand new bike rental service for Philadelphia.

Residents of and visitors to Philadelphia can now rent Fuji hybrid two-wheels, surrey bikes, tandem bikes, deuce coupe bikes and Segways for a healthier, faster way to explore the city.

Pickup locations, placed throughout the city, are convenient to a wide variety of people: Lloyd Hall on Boathouse Row, Love Park and the Bathey House/Trolley Car Caf? in East Falls.

The new bike rental service is just another feather in Mayor Nutter?s cap in terms of supporting the cycling community. He?s also spearheaded the continual addition of bike lanes and installation of 350 bike racks across the city.

Proceeds from Wheel Fun Rentals benefit Philadelphia?s parks, contributing to park and trail renovations and projects along the Schuylkill River Trail and Kelly Drive.

Another bonus: Wheel Fun Rentals is employing teens from the the Philadelphia City Rowing program and Neighborhood Bike Works program, a local nonprofit that aims to increase opportunities for urban youth in underserved neighborhoods through bicycling. The teens will be able to apply what they learn through the Neighborhood Bike Works program in their job at Wheel Fun Rentals.

Wheel Fun Rentals is open seven days a week. Summer hours (June-Labor Day) are 9 a.m.-sunset. In the fall (Labor Day-October), Wheel Fun Rentals will be open Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 10 a.m.-sunset.

Death toll, injuries mount from Mali rebel clash

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? The tenuous truce between two of the rebel groups controlling northern Mali was shattered on Wednesday, as the rebel faction bent on creating an Islamic state fought its way into the buildings used by a secular rebel group. The latter was forced to beat a retreat and one of their leaders was airlifted abroad after being shot in the leg.

Resident Hamadada Toure said that he had cowered inside his home during the morning, when the clash started after fighters belonging to the Islamic faction, known as MUJAO, parked a car loaded with weapons 50 yards (meters) from the headquarters of the secular rebel group, the National Movement for the Liberation of the Azawad.

The two are among the armed groups that seized control of the northern half of Mali, an area the size of France, earlier this year. They fell out earlier this month because MUJAO and another Islamic faction want to impose Shariah law in northern Mali, while the NMLA wants to create a secular country. Last week an unwed couple in Gao was publicly lashed.

Toure said that heavy shooting could be heard until 2 p.m. local time. When he emerged from his house he found that the balance of power in the town had shifted.

"I saw five dead NMLA fighters whose bodies had been dumped on the ground near the governor's building in Gao, the headquarters of the NMLA," Toure said by telephone around 30 minutes after the fighting had stopped. "In all the buildings that the NMLA had controlled, their flag had been taken down and been replaced by the flag of the Islamists."

The switch in rebel control of the buildings of Gao was confirmed by a second resident, Mohamed Diamoye, a doctor at the local hospital who said three bodies had been brought to the morgue. They included that of a MUJAO fighter.

A member of the NMLA, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said that one of the group's leaders was accidentally shot during the clash. Bilal Ag Cherif, the NMLA's secretary general, was airlifted to Ouagadougou, the capital of neighbouring Burkina Faso, in a helicopter.

Among the dead is Col. Bouna Ag Atouyoub, a colonel in the NMLA, said the group's Paris-based spokesman Moussa Ag Acharatoumane, who was reached by telephone.

Rebels from the Tuareg ethnic group seized control of the northern half of the nation of Mali in late March, taking advantage of the power vacuum created by a coup in Bamako, the capital. Leading the rebel advance was the NMLA, which said it was fighting to create an independent homeland for the Tuareg people in northern Mali, known as the Azawad in the Tamashek language.

It was not long before it became clear that the rebels were not united. At least two Islamist factions emerged, including MUJAO, which seized parts of Gao, and Ansar Dine, which based itself in Timbuktu. Both Islamist groups are believed to have links to al-Qaida and analysts say their open existence in northern Mali poses a grave security risk not just for Mali, but for the region.

Last month, the rebel factions met in Gao to try to hash out a common position, signing an accord that created a governing council. The talks disintegrated just weeks later over the issue of Shariah, with the Islamist faction wanting the strict Islamic law applied throughout northern Mali, a position that the secular NMLA rejects.

A fighter with the NMLA who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter said that a convoy of NMLA soldiers had left the northern city of Kidal headed toward Gao to try take back the town. A military official with the NMLA, however, downplayed the attack, saying that the buildings seized by MUJAO in Gao were not strategically important.

"I cannot confirm that the HQ of the NMLA, which is located inside the governor's building in Gao, has been taken by the Islamists from MUJAO," said Col. Asaleth Ag Khabi, the deputy to the chief of staff of the NMLA and the head of military operations in Gao.

"But in any case this headquarters is just a political office. Not a military building. We are dealing with Islamists that are from Gao, that are here from a long time ago. Who were born and raised here. And this combat is not over yet," he said by telephone from an undisclosed location in northern Mali.

Kuemper finishes split with Panther baseball

CARROLL ? Kuemper Catholic moved within a half game of fifth-place Creston in the Hawkeye 10 baseball standings Wednesday with a 7-2 victory over the Panthers.

Creston traveled to Carroll to finish the second half of a doubleheader from June 14, when the Panthers won the opener 7-5 before the nightcap was postponed by rain.

But Creston fell short of the sweep by providing the Knights four unearned runs on three errors, despite outhitting the hosts 8-6.

?Too many unearned runs ... sloppy play,? Creston coach Steve Birchard said. ?It was an accumulation of a lot of little things that made it look sort of ugly. We led off the game with an error. Ben (Landers) didn?t really have his usual control, and he got tired.?

Landers allowed only three earned runs in taking the loss. In 3 2/3 innings he gave up five hits with one walk and one strikeout. Nate Haley finished with 2 1/3 shutout innings.

Freshman Adam Schleisman pitched a complete game for the Knights, allowing eight hits with three walks and one strikeout.

Kuemper improved to 7-7 in the conference and 17-11 overall. Creston stays in fifth place at 8-7, and 12-10 overall.

Creston?s only scoring occurred in the sixth inning. After a Kuemper error, Creston put together a rally with two outs on fielder?s choices. Briar Evans? double put runners on second and third, setting up RBI singles by Cole Crawford and Trevor Luther. Crawford was thrown out trying to advance to third, ending the inning.

Bryce Wessels hit a two-run homer in Kuemper?s three-run third inning to make it 4-0. The Knights added three more runs in the fourth. Logan Nolting had a triple and three RBI.

The long week of conference play continues today for the Panthers in a varsity doubleheader at Atlantic (third in H-10 at 9-4, 14-7 overall.)

?We will have to play hard,? Birchard said. ?They are one of the teams that will be near the top at the end.?

Real Business Metrics for Digital Marketing ? Digital Marketing Blog ...

One of the greatest challenges facing brands ? from scrappy startups to market giants ?is how to gauge real, financially applicable business goals from digital marketing efforts.

Is it possible to put a financial value on social media? What is the ROI of blogging? Here is a few simple self-help steps below will help steer you in the right direction for valuable insights from your online marketing efforts.

(Editor?s note: Though this focus is on digital marketing, it?s worth noting that the same technique can be applied to traditional marketing channels as well. ? MF)

What do you hope to achieve?

Unlike traditional marketing efforts, there is an over-abundance of data available from your digital marketing efforts. Don?t confuse what can be measured with what should be measured.

You could track website visitors (in both unique and repeat flavor) to then drill down further to traffic source and then further to discover if the best traffic came from an iPad or Windows computers using Firefox, Explorer or Chrome ?oh, and they?ll have an 1280 x 1024 display resolution.

The insight of ?what size monitor do my customers use? can be cool ?and it?s nice to know that you can get all of that information when you need it ?and this is where analysis paralysis usually starts.

Focus on what you should measure. Start at the real end business goal, then work your way back. It?s OK to think abstract here. It could be as simple as ?increase downloads of my free trial? or as high-level as ?increase engagement.? In the following steps, we?ll discuss how to start quantifying

What do you mean?

What do you mean by your goal? What do you mean by ?increase engagement?? This simple step will unlock more ?a-ha!? moments than any other exercise or workshop. Challenge yourself, your peers and coworkers to define the goal in plain English.

Fight the urge to Google your answer. Force yourself and your peers to answer this unplugged. There is no ?standard? method of measuring your goal and Googling will only get you stuck on the least useful lowest common denominator.

While ?website engagement? is a pretty tricky thing to nail down, defining it in plain English may show you exactly what hard numbers you?ll need to look at to gauge success.

In talking with a B2B peer about engagement on her brand?s tech-sector website, we decided that an ?engaged? user is a visitor that:

  1. Views more pages on the website
  2. Spends more time on the website
  3. Visits repeatedly and with frequency
  4. Maybe downloads a specification sheet from the website
  5. Maybe fills out a ?contact us? form
  6. Maybe opts-in to regular updates via email

It?s worth noting that I?ve seen longer and shorter lists, but this list worked for this particular case. Time on site, pageviews per visit and frequency and/or repeat visitors will almost always make the list, but are your visitors really engaged if they aren?t compelled to act?

Can you match the attributes to the data?

Each of the attributes from the definition above can be tracked using Google Analytics or most other enterprise-level web analytics platforms. If you can?t figure out how to match an attribute from your own definition, consider refining it further or consult a web analytics and digital strategy specialist.

From the above sample, we built a model that looks something like this:

It looks scary, but it can easily be spread out into a simple Excel sheet. Creating the formula first allows you to consider the important factors and allows you to use the same model beyond analytics, such as creating targeted marketing based on an individual user?s engagement score.

Pages (Pi) should indicate the average pages per visit across all visitors throughout the timeframe measured (typically one month.) This metric is displayed on the main audience overview report of Google Analytics.

Time (Ti) is the average time visitors spend on site as measured across all visitors within the timeframe. In the formula, it is used as minutes (seconds/60.) This metric is displayed on the main audience overview report of Google Analytics as minutes and seconds, so the marketer using this model will have to remember to convert.

Repeat (Ri) visitors is the percentage of traffic within the timeframe who are repeat website users. This metric is displayed on the main audience overview report of Google Analytics.

Frequency (Fi) is an index of the average frequency of visits within the time period. Google Analytics tracks this data over the course of the year, allowing for values from 0 days since last visit to ?365+.?

For this model, the marketer had decided that a very engaged user would view 5 pages or more. To use this in our metric, the value (F
= (5 ? (Average Days since Last Visit)) * -1).

The metric ?days since last visit? appears in the Audience reports of Google Analytics under Behavior, then Frequency & Recency.

Note: When taking this data from Google Analytics, I prefer to use an advanced segment, or filter, that shows me only the repeat visitors, as new visitors are counted as ?zero days since last visit,? which would artificially reward a site with low repeat visitors.

The final part of this summation is the overall conversion rate of site traffic towards one of the goals specified. You could simplify this to be (Ci) and just do a raw count of the conversions, but for the sake of this model, we decided to use the conversion rate as a multiplier to emphasize the importance of conversions to user engagement.

Can I actually use this thing?

Split your model into an Excel sheet or table for an easy work sheet. If you?re handy with formulas, you can save yourself the calculator step and build something really smart [read: nerdtasticly awesome] but a simple worksheet and handy calculator work just as well.

?

Our relative value for the month reviewed was 52.87. Is that good or bad? Depends.

There is no try?

Is your first grade good or bad? It?s neither. It?s a baseline. The value you earn from your own metric is a relative value suitable only for your own website and business goals. It can?t be used to compare yourself to competitors, but it?s brilliant for comparing you to yourself.

Armed with this metric, you can accurately grade the effect of your website optimization and digital marketing efforts for their effect on whatever you were tracking. Have a model for as many high-level goals as you can create.

Regularly using this method empowers you as a data-based-marketer to walk into you annual review with a hard stat of success, ?This year we increased website engagement 334%.? Or, a clear opportunity for focusing your efforts, ?Our website maintained the same level of engagement for the past two years. This year, we?ll look at strategies and solutions to increase website engagement.? Powerful stuff, wouldn?t you say? Marketing annual reviews have a bad reputation for being ?fluffy,? but this allows you to back formerly ?soft? claims with the hard facts.

Building Data into Marketing

For the sake of example, we?ve used a fairly general sample case of ?website engagement,? but we were sure to include ?and even favor ? hard business stats into our grade. The same method can be used to track numerous high-level goals such as:

  • Website Engagement
  • Social Media Effectiveness
  • Content Offer Engagement
  • Paid Search ROI for B2B Content Downloads

(AP) ? Sen. Orrin Hatch won the GOP primary in Utah on Tuesday, handily turning back a challenge from tea party forces hoping to jolt the Republican Party again by defeating an incumbent who occasionally strayed from the movement's focus on shrinking the federal government.

Until this summer, Hatch, 78, had not faced a primary challenge since winning office in 1976. Former state Sen. Dan Liljenquist, who survived a 2008 plane crash in Guatemala that killed 11 of 14 on board, won just enough support at the state GOP's nominating convention to advance to the primary.

But Liljenquist faced an overwhelming financial and organizational disadvantage. Hatch, learning from the defeat two years ago of his Senate colleague Robert Bennett, spent about $10 million blanketing the airwaves and building a campaign operation unlike anything Utah had seen before.

Hatch's race was the premier event in Tuesday's primaries. In New York, 82-year-old Rep. Charlie Rangel won the Democratic primary in spite of a House censure 18 months ago for failing to pay all his taxes and for filing misleading financial disclosure statements.

In Oklahoma, Rep. John Sullivan was in a close contest against political newcomer Jim Bridenstine, who ran to Sullivan's right and criticized the incumbent for missing hundreds of House votes in the past decade.

A few months ago, Hatch was considered vulnerable like Bennett and six-term Republican Sen. Richard Lugar, who lost in last month's Indiana GOP primary. But Hatch got a huge endorsement from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who said he would need Hatch in the Senate if he wins the presidency.

Romney easily won his final presidential primary Tuesday as GOP voters in Utah relished the chance to show their support for the Brigham Young University graduate.

Hatch seemed to have an answer to every criticism in his quest for a seventh term. For those who said that 36 years in office was enough, he said that he wouldn't be running again if it weren't for the opportunity to serve as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee if the GOP wins control of the Senate. He also announced it would be his last term.

For those who said he wasn't conservative enough, he gravitated to the right with his comments and his votes, scoring a 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union in 2010 and 2011. His lifetime rating of 89 percent from the ACU would place Hatch among the Senate's most conservative lawmakers, but Hatch at times took stands that didn't sit well with the right. He worked with the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy to establish a health insurance program for poor and moderate-income children. He also voted to establish a prescription drug benefit under Medicare and to rescue financial firms facing bankruptcy without government help.

Liljenquist, 37, a relative newcomer to the Utah political scene, seized on voters' concerns about the growing national debt and tried to make the case that Hatch had been a major contributor to that debt.

Hatch was widely viewed as most vulnerable when about 4,000 GOP stalwarts gathered at the state's nominating convention in April. Delegates at the convention tend to be more conservative than the GOP electorate, and the Hatch campaign team spent months trying to generate a new crop of delegates. That work paid off, with the large majority of delegates being new to the process. In the end, Hatch won 59.2 percent of the delegates, just shy of the 60 percent he needed to avoid a runoff with Liljenquist.

The Hatch campaign included many of the state's top political consultants and strategists. It also hired some of the tea party activists who had helped generate Sen. Mike Lee's victory two years ago.

With the primary victory, Hatch was a huge favorite to win the general election in November against Democratic candidate Scott Howell.

Video: Illegal immigrants wary of SCOTUS decision

>> arizona case the court decided today, after all. nbc's mike taibbi is there tonight and has reaction for us to the court ruling .

>> reporter: it only seemed like a normal day for letisha ramirez's family, her husband off to his construction job and her children watching early morning tv. but she and her husband have been in this country illegally for over a decade. when she later watched the supreme court ruling unfold, she said the verdict though it only upheld the so-called show your papers part of the law was still threatening.

>> the community won't be able to go out, have a normal life . they're going to be afraid that if they go out they might get stopped just for your color.

>> reporter: kelly townsend is a mother, too.

>> my daughter is half hispanic.

>> reporter: she and other supporters saw today's ruling, which requires law enforcement to check immigration status, as a clear win and a reason to keep pushing for the parts of the bill ruled unconstitutional.

>> i do believe that is a victory that was the heart of it. it's necessary.

>> this is where the rubber meets the road.

>> reporter: meanwhile on the front lines of the state's effort to curb illegal immigration , local units like pima county 's border crimes unit work with federal border patrol agents to try and stem the flow along 120 miles of border.

>> they get to this spot, they're almost home free?

>> yes.

>> reporter: the sheriff's department has detained and arrested hundreds while sb- 1070 was drifting in the political winds and pima county sheriff clarence duknik says this ruling will change nothing about how the job is done.

>> it doesn't take a genius to determine whether somebody is here illegally given the reality of our work.

>> it is also a reality that most in this state believe arizona must do what they say the federal government has not done.

>> this is the law. we need to enforce it.

>> reporter: the reality, too, that one group primarily believes today's ruling leaves them as vulnerable as ever. arizona 's already spent about $3 million defending its controversial law. most of it from private donations. there were some questions raised today about whether they'll still be the appetite, the political will to continue to defend the law vigorously if the taxpayers have to start footing the bill.

>> mike taibbi in phoenix for us tonight. thanks.

>>> now we'll talk about politics and the law. first of all, all of this of course taking place in a presidential election year. with us now our chief white house correspondent and political director chuck todd , who is at the white house . chuck, look at this for us vis-a-vis the political campaign under way.

>> today was the day where the obama campaign was pretty happy with what happened and the romney campaign was not very happy. let's start with president obama . you talk tosome democratic strategists and they say the part of the law that was upheld will only help them motivate hispanics even more and help them essentially alienate them from the republican party . as for mitt romney , brian, you saw today he doesn't like talking about this issue right now because they know the fine line they have to walk between not looking like they're contradicting what romney said during the primary campaign and not alienating hispanics. he said today he was against the decision, if you will. he wished that the supreme court had given states more leeway, but he's trying not to talk about it much. he wants to be talking about the economy.

>> chuck todd on the white house lawn. thanks. that's politics. now about the law. it's always good to ask a lawyer. with us now here in our studios in new york are chief legal correspondent savannah guthrie . savannah, what survives here and where to from here?

>> actually, the most controversial provision, the one that allows state officers to determine the immigration status of anyone they've lawfully stopped, and i think we'll see more lawsuits, frankly. this is a law that has never gone into effect because of this supreme court litigation. well, now it will, and that issue about whether that proef ifgs tproef -- proef ifgs the law leads to racial profiling will be at issue potentially. that was not something the court decided today. now you can expect plaintiffs to file lawsuits and say hey my constitutional rights were violated.

>> we'll be back at this thursday when the next big decision comes down on health care . thanks. always a pleasure.

Lead poisoning blocks recovery of California condor population

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? A comprehensive study led by environmental toxicologists at the University of California, Santa Cruz, shows that California condors are continually exposed to harmful levels of lead, the principal source of that lead is ammunition, and lead poisoning from ammunition is preventing the recovery of the condor population.

The scientists reported their findings in a paper to be published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) the week of June 25 (online Early Edition). First author Myra Finkelstein, a research toxicologist at UC Santa Cruz, said the study shows that without a solution to the problem of lead poisoning, the condor population can only be sustained through intensive and costly management efforts.

"We will never have a self-sustaining wild condor population if we don't solve this problem," she said. "Currently, California condors are tagged and monitored, trapped twice a year for blood tests, and when necessary treated for lead poisoning in veterinary hospitals, and they still die from lead poisoning on a regular basis."

With a total population of just 22 birds in 1982, the California condor once teetered on the brink of extinction. A successful captive breeding program enabled the reintroduction of condors into the wild (at sites in California, Arizona, and Baja California), and the total population grew to nearly 400 birds (captive and free-flying) by the end of 2010. But the new study, which focuses on condors in California, describes a population still on the verge of collapse, sustained only by ongoing human intervention.

Since 1997, about half of all free-flying condors in California have required treatment for lead poisoning, and each year about one in five birds needs treatment. This usually involves capturing the birds and transporting them to a zoo where they can receive chelation therapy to remove lead from their blood and supportive care until they are healthy enough to return to the wild.

Condors are opportunistic scavengers, feeding primarily on the carcasses of large mammals such as deer. They can ingest fragments of lead bullets from feeding on carcasses or gut piles of animals shot by hunters. Lead poisoning was probably one of several factors that led to the near extinction of the species.

The new study brings together an interdisciplinary team and several lines of evidence to understand the impact of lead on the condor population, said coauthor Donald Smith, professor of environmental toxicology at UC Santa Cruz. A previous study from Smith's lab had already identified ammunition as the principal source of lead poisoning in condors. By expanding the number of cases studied by about five times, the new study confirms and extends the earlier findings.

The UCSC researchers are able to identify the source of the lead in a condor blood sample using a "fingerprinting" technique based on the isotope ratios found in different sources of lead. Condors raised in captivity that have not yet been released into the wild have low blood lead levels, with lead isotope ratios that fall within the range of background environmental lead in California. Most free-flying condors, however, have lead isotope ratios consistent with those found in ammunition, and the higher a bird's blood lead level, the more likely that its lead isotope ratio matches the lead in ammunition.

In addition to blood samples, the researchers also analyzed lead in feathers. Because feathers grow over a period of several months, sampling sequentially along the length of the feather gives a record of the bird's history of lead exposure. The results not only show that condors are chronically lead poisoned, but also suggest that the magnitude of lead exposure is likely much higher than indicated by periodic blood monitoring, Finkelstein said.

The study also found that even when blood lead levels are below the threshold that would prompt treatment for lead poisoning, condors experience sublethal health effects from lead exposure. The researchers used a biochemical test that is a well-established biomarker for lead toxicity in humans and wildlife. The results showed that condors are as sensitive to lead as other species, and about 30 percent of condors every year are exposed to levels that cause sublethal health effects.

The research team's analysis of condor population demographics, led by University of Colorado biologist Dan Doak, was particularly discouraging. Without continued releases of captive-reared birds and interventions to treat lead-poisoning, the condor population would again decline toward extinction, the researchers found. How long this would take depends on assumptions about the mortality rate from lead-poisoning, but demographic projections indicated that, within the next few decades, the wild condor population in California would be reduced once again to just 22 birds.

The free-flying condor population does appear to be roughly stable under current levels of intensive management, the study found. Coauthor Jesse Grantham, who recently retired as head of the condor recovery program for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, estimated the current cost of the condor program to be about $5 million per year, including the contributions of all the agencies and organizations involved in the effort. This level of management would have to continue in perpetuity to keep the population from again declining toward extinction.

Efforts in California to address the problem of lead exposure have led to state regulations banning the use of lead ammunition in condor habitat. A partial ban went into effect in July 2008 and was later expanded. So far, however, researchers have found no evidence that the ban has resulted in a reduction in blood lead levels in condors.

"Unfortunately, even if only a few people are still using lead ammunition, there will be enough contaminated carcasses to cause lead poisoning in a significant number of condors," Finkelstein said. "We found that over the course of 10 years, if just one half of one percent of carcasses have lead in them, the probability that each free-flying condor will be exposed is 85 to 98 percent, and one exposure event could kill a condor."

These findings suggest that greater regulation of lead-based ammunition may be necessary to protect condors, she said. Although alternatives to lead ammunition are available, regulations limiting the use of lead-based ammunition face stiff opposition from hunting organizations and gun-rights groups.

In addition to Finkelstein, Smith, Doak, and Grantham, the coauthors of the PNAS paper include Daniel George, condor program manager at Pinnacles National Monument; Joe Burnett of the Ventana Wildlife Society; Joseph Brandt of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and Molly Church of the San Diego Zoo's Wildlife Disease Laboratories. This research was supported by the National Park Service, Western National Park Association, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
