LONDON (AP) ? Taekwondo may be known mostly for its flashy kicks and acrobatic jumping, but it was the sport?s disputed scoring system that gained the spotlight at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

To avoid getting thrown out of the Olympics, the sport?s governing body completely overhauled its antiquated system of scoring punches and kicks.

At this weekend?s British Open, an international taekwondo competition in Manchester, officials will be fine-tuning the new electronic scoring and video replay systems. The event is one of the key warm-up events ahead of the 2012 London Olympics, where the new technology will be used at the games for the first time.

In addition to revamping how attacks are scored, taekwondo officials have also changed the rules to make fights more entertaining for fans: Players now score more points for fancy kicks to the head.

?That encourages fighters to do the high kicks and spinning kicks that make spectators say ?wow,?? said Tony Grisman, the defending British Open champion in the men?s 68-kilogram division. ?It?s definitely changed my strategy because if you?re thinking tactically of how to get the most points, you have to kick high.?

That?s something Grisman hopes to try on his opponents at the Manchester tournament, which has attracted more then 400 top fighters from about 50 countries, including Olympic medalists and world champions.

One of the British Open?s biggest tests will be how well the new scoring system works.

?We?re trying to mimic the Olympic Games as closely as we can,? said Ian Leafe, who heads the group that organized the British Open. ?The human eye is only so quick, so we needed a system that was more objective.?

In Beijing, several countries complained about scoring discrepancies. A British protest even led officials to overturn the original results of a women?s heavyweight bout. In 2008, scoring was done manually by four corner judges and points were only awarded if three of the four judges registered a blow simultaneously.

Critics said that left too much room for error, and taekwondo officials worried the Korean martial art might be replaced in the Olympics by karate or Chinese wu-shu.

The World Taekwondo Federation, the sport?s governing body, decided to go electronic.

Taekwondo fighters now wear an electronic body protector that registers kicks and punches only if the athlete strikes his or her opponent with sufficient force. Kicks to the head are still scored manually by corner judges, but coaches now have the right to at least one video replay per match, much like the Hawkeye system in tennis.

Leafe said the new system should eliminate the potential for scoring disputes.

?It?s now much more transparent and calls can be challenged instantly in the middle of a fight,? he said.

In the case of a challenge, the fight immediately stops and the referee confers with the judges or consults a video replay.

Since its origins as Korea?s oldest martial art ? which was once only taught to elite warriors ? taekwondo has transformed itself into the world?s most popular martial art. According to the World Taekwondo Federation, there are more than 70 million practitioners in 191 countries.

Korean soldiers still study the martial art to develop their combat skills; taekwondo translates as ?the art of the foot and fist.?

But for Olympic purposes, taekwondo fighters focus on their feet. That?s because punches are only allowed to the body and are worth only one point ? and only if the punch is strong enough to push the opponent off balance.

However, kicks can score up to four points if they?re aimed at the head and if they involve a turning or spinning technique.

Taekwondo officials also decreased the size of the competition area and introduced an inactivity penalty for any fighter who goes without trying to kick or punch for longer than 10 seconds. Such changes have taken the sport further from its martial arts origins, but that may be precisely what it needs to attract more fans.

?Taekwondo as an Olympic sport is like a game,? said Grisman, the defending champion. ?It?s not about who can do the best kick. It?s about who?s the most clever and can adapt to different situations and score the most points. That makes it more exciting to watch than a traditional martial art.?

Chaffetz Introduces Immigration Bill | The Oquirrh Times Online ...

Consistent with his commitment to fix legal immigration, today Congressman Chaffetz introduced HR 3012, The Fairness for High Skilled Immigrants Act. House Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith (R-TX) joined Mr. Chaffetz on the bill.

Representative Jason Chaffetz

HR 3012 amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to eliminate the per country numerical limitation for employment-based immigrants and adjusts the limitations on family visas without increasing the total number of available visas.
The Immigration and Nationality Act generally provides that the total number of employment-based immigrant visas made available to natives of any foreign country in a year cannot exceed 7% of the total number of such visas made available in that year.?The bill eliminates this per country percentage cap.
?The current percentage cap has created a backlog of qualified workers.? American companies view all highly skilled immigrants as the same regardless of where they are from, and our immigration policy should do the same,? said Chaffetz.
HR 3012 creates a fair and equitable, ?first come, first serve? system.? Under this system, US companies will be able to focus on what they do best ? hiring smart people to create products, services, and jobs for Americans.
Current law prohibits US employers from hiring foreign workers to fill these jobs unless there are not sufficient US workers who are able, willing, qualified, and available. The employment of the immigrant will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of similarly employed workers in the US. HR 3012 does not change this, but it does encourage high skilled immigrants who were educated in the US to stay and contribute to our economy, rather than taking the skills they learned and aiding our competitor nations.
?I am committed to helping fix legal immigration. Per country limits make no sense in the context of employment-based visas.?Companies view all highly skilled immigrants as the same regardless of where they are from?be it India or Brazil,? said Chaffetz.?? ?By removing per country limits, American companies will be able to access the best talent.?
The bill also adjusts family based visa limits from 7% per country to 15% per country.
This legislation is pro-growth, pro-jobs, and pro-innovation.? It is supported by the US Chamber of Commerce, Compete America (a coalition of high tech companies (Microsoft, Google, Oracle, etc.) and various trade groups (BSA, SIA, ITIC, etc.), and Immigration Voice (the leading coalition of highly skilled foreign professionals).

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Cold Spring Harbor, NY Scientists at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and the University of Southern California (USC) have uncovered intriguing new evidence helping to explain one of the ways in which a stem cell's fate can be determined.

The new data show how the "marking" of DNA sequences by groups of methyl molecules a process called methylation can influence the type of cell a stem cell will become. The cellular maturation process, called differentiation, has long been thought to be affected by methylation. Subtle changes in methylation patterns within subsets of a particular cell type have now been observed and closely scrutinized, and they reveal some intriguing mechanisms at work in the process.

A team led by postdoc Dr. Emily Hodges, working in the laboratory of CSHL Professor and HHMI Investigator Gregory Hannon, studied how methylation changes in blood stem cells can affect whether a given stem cell will differentiate into either a myeloid cell or a lymphoid cell. These are the two major lineages of mature blood cells. Sophisticated mathematical analyses of the data were performed under the direction of USC Professor Andrew D. Smith.

The study, which will appear in print October 7 in the journal Molecular Cell, generated some surprising findings that challenge currently held theories about how methylation operates. First, it demonstrated that methylation patterns are more dynamic than they are often thought to be. "It's not a question of methylation being 'on' or 'off' at a given site in the genome," explains Hodges. "We find, instead, an interesting fluctuation of the boundaries of regions that are free of methylation marks. This fact, in turn, can have a profound impact upon cell fate."

Areas lacking methylation, called hypomethylated regions, or HMRs, tend to coincide with so-called CpG islands, sites in the genome where adjacent "Cs" and "G's" cytosine and guanine nucleotides are seen in strings of repeats. These unmethylated regions tend to be ones associated with nearby genes that are capable of being expressed. In contrast, sites in the genome that are methylated are typically not expressed.

The new study, which looks at these areas at high resolution in cells of the different blood cell lineages and in blood stem cells, finds that in many cases, a core portion of the unmethylated region is shared in common, but that adjacent areas, sometimes called "CpG shores" the outlying areas around CpG islands differ markedly in breadth. The CSHL-USC team refines the notion of islands and shores, preferring to describe the narrowing and widening of the "shoreline" as a tidal phenomenon.

"We observed that the boundaries of these unmethylated regions goes in and out, like the tides," says Hodges. "The key question is what drives these changes. We found that the width of these regions depends on the gene that is associated with the region. We showed in blood cells that the variation is lineage-specific."

The team deduced this after making close study of the methylation patterns in genomic regions containing genes known from other research to be expressed specifically in lymphoid cells, but not in myeloid cells, or vice versa. In these cases, all blood cells share a narrow "core" region of hypomethylation; but only in one lineage did the unmethylated region widen a widening that opens the promoter of the "underlying" gene to the cellular machinery initiating gene expression. In other words, the lack of methylation over a wider area enables the underlying gene to be activated only in the specified cell-type, but not in any of the others.

Another striking observation made from this data is the directional preference of this expansion. For example, in the widening of the unmethylated region seen in the case of the lymphoid cell, the direction of the widening was toward the area occupied by the underlying gene, which in this case was a gene encoding a B cell surface marker called CD22.

It has generally been thought that methylation is a stable epigenetic mark and that changes in methylation are unidirectional; and further, that cells become increasingly methylated as they move through the differentiation process toward their mature identity. And in fact, the only known direction of active change is from an unmethylated state to a methylated state.

The new data suggests, however, that dynamic changes in methylation status may be possible. The relevant evidence comes from blood stem cells, which were observed to have methylation patterns that the team describes as "intermediately methylated," seemingly in dynamic equilibria of the two extreme states of "methylated" and "unmethylated."

According to Hodges, this raises the possibility that methylation might in fact be bidirectional, and that there might be an as yet undiscovered, active mechanism that performs de-methylation. No known enzyme has this ability to remove methyl groups from DNA; DNA methyltransferase is the well-known enzyme that catalyzes the addition of methyl groups.

Yet another of the team's unexpected findings concerns the position of HMRs relative to know genic regions. While unmethylated regions tend to be associated with nearby genes that are capable of being expressed, the team found, according to Hodges, "a lot of HMRs located far away from any annotated gene locus." One notable thing about these regions, she says, "is that they were highly enriched for binding sites of specific regulatory molecules that are involved in chromatin organization."

Chromatin consists of DNA and the protein complexes called histones around which genomic DNA is packed. In a given cell, chromatin organization, like methylation, helps to determine whether specific genes can be expressed or not.

(AP) ? Matadors drove the killing sword into bulls for the last time Sunday in Spain's powerful northeastern region of Catalonia in an emotive farewell fight before a polemical regional ban on the country's emblematic tradition takes effect.

Three of Spain's top bullfighters, including No. 1 Jose Tomas, starred in the sold-out show at Barcelona's 20,000-seat Monumental ring. Catalan bullfighter Serafin Marin closed the fight killing the last of six bulls to great applause.

Many fans then invaded the ring to grab handfuls of sand to keep as souvenirs.

The bullfighters were later carried shoulder high from the ring into the streets outside the bullring while the crowd chanted slogans in favor of freedom and against the prohibition. A brief bout of scuffling broke out as fans confronted about 20 animal welfare activists, but there were no reports of injuries or arrests.

The fight was also preceded by moments of tension as pro- and anti-bullfighting activists exchanged insults.

Catalonia's Parliament banned bullfighting in July 2010 following a signature-collection campaign by animal rights activists. The ban does not take effect until Jan. 1, but Sunday's fight was the last scheduled this season.

Critics say the prohibition is less about animal welfare and more a snub to Spain by independence-minded Catalans.

Bullfighting's popularity in Catalonia has plunged in recent decades and the Monumental was its last functioning ring, although the city once boasted three.

Hours before the fight, a small group of anti-bullfight activists gathered outside the arena, celebrating with sparkling wine.

"Obviously a lot of political parties have tried to politicize this, but we mustn't forget that this popular proposal sprouted from a pure pro-animal rights standpoint aimed at eradicating animal cruelty," campaigner Soraya Gaston said.

Others hoped the prohibition might only be temporary.

"It looks like this may be the last day (of bullfights in Catalonia). But the last word hasn't been said yet," fan Eduardo Edurna said. "I think we will have bullfighting back in Catalonia."

The prohibition caused a furor and triggered a nationwide debate over the centuries-old spectacle that inspired such artists and writers as Goya, Picasso and Hemingway.

"Banning bullfighting in Catalonia is nothing more than an attack on liberty," said Carlos Nunez, president of Spain's Mesa del Toro pro-bullfighting umbrella group. "It's the fruit of policies in Catalonia against bullfighting and all that is seen to represent Spain."

Although mostly symbolic ? the Monumental staged only some 15 fights a year ? the prohibition sent bullfighting supporters frantically looking for ways to overturn the decision or at least make sure it doesn't spread to other regions.

Spain's leading conservative opposition Popular Party ? tipped to win general elections in November ? has appealed the ban before the Constitutional Court, while its Catalan branch is battling for a delay in the implementation of the ban.

Meanwhile, the Mesa del Toro is seeking 500,000 signatures in the hope it can persuade the Madrid national parliament to grant bullfighting cultural heritage status.

Animal rights activists, meanwhile, are triumphant.

"It's like a crack has developed in the armor plating (of bullfighting). It's a small crack but the protective shield might crumble altogether," said Leonardo Anselmi, a key promoter of the Catalan prohibition.

Catalonia is the second of Spain's 17 regions to ban bullfighting. The Canary Islands outlawed the practice in 1991 although it had never been a popular tradition there.

For the moment, however, there are no signs any other Spanish region will follow suit.

The practice was once immensely popular in Barcelona and other Catalan towns but its decline began with the end of the dictatorship of Francisco Franco in 1978 and the subsequent rise in Catalan nationalism and a rejection of things deemed Spanish.

But critics say the hypocrisy of banning bullfighting in the name of animal rights was shown up when months after the ban, Catalonia passed other legislation protecting the "correbous," a typical Catalan town festival event in which flaming balls of wax or fireworks are attached to the horns of bulls which are then taunted and teased by rowdy crowds in bullrings or town squares.

Spain's ancient fascination with bulls, and with using the animals as a test of bravery, is still very much a part of the national identity. Bullfights and related events, such as the annual San Fermin Pamplona bull-runs, make up a multimillion-dollar industry and draw many tourists.

But modern times and the economic crisis have nevertheless hit the tradition hard and surveys consistently show most Spaniards have no interest in bullfighting.

In an article headlined "The Fiesta is Ending," leading newspaper El Pais highlighted that changing tastes and economic difficulties, particularly in small towns, have led to a 34 percent drop in the number of bull-related festival events from 2,622 to 1,724 between 2007 and 2010.

In January, Spain's leading broadcaster said it would no longer show live bullfights in order to protect children from viewing violence.

Hair Loss ? A Symptom of Thyroid Disorder | 3NM.ORG

Alopecia, baldness or commonly known as hair loss can be of different nature. Hair thinning may be due to medications, heredity, genes, ageing, improper diet, etc. It can even be a symptom of an ongoing disease that you might be experiencing. Hair thinning or change in hair texture is one of the most easily detectable symptoms of a thyroid condition.

product for hair loss
One of the many causes of hair thinning or baldness is thyroid malfunctioning. Both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can cause severe baldness. Hypothyroidism is a condition when there is a deficiency of thyroid hormones in the body. Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is characterized by excessive amounts of thyroid hormone in the body.? In both cases, the hormonal level in the body gets disturbed or altered.

Hair loss could be the first significant symptom of an impending condition in the body especially with hormones.? Other people consider hair as the barometer of one?s health for the reason that hair cells are some of the fastest growing materials in the body and when hair cells shut down themselves, it is an indication of a certain bodily crisis.

One of the main characteristics for hypothyroidism is thinning and losing hair shafts from the end or outer edge of the eyebrows. The hair on the head may become thinner and start falling off. In this case, the rate of hair fall is greater than the normal rate (50?100 hair shafts per day). Other effects of hypothyroidism on the hairs are changes in texture and dryness and the hairs can easily be tangled.

hair laser treatment
To stop hair loss caused by Thyroid disorder, it is important to seek proper medical help from professionals who can give you proper advice and medication. One also needs to take vitamins to effectively restore hair caused by thyroid disorder. Many patients have found vitamins to be an effective way of restoring hair after thyroid-induced baldness. Vitamins B, C, and E all nourish the hair, skin and fingernails. You can take them in supplement form, and can also massage the scalp with oils containing these vitamins.

There are some other techniques like alternative therapies including acupressure or acupuncture which can treat both thyroid problem and hair fall at the same time. Essential oils containing different herbs can also solve baldness up to a certain extent. You also need to avoid harsh chemicals from shampoos and soap, instead use natural herbal shampoos which are mild.

Following proper diet and regimen as instructed by your endocrinologist can also get rid of thyroid hormonal disorder. Once your hormonal level comes to normal, the baldness can be prevented. Once a thyroid problem has been diagnosed and the underlying cause of the hair loss is being treated, you can begin nourishing the hair you have and learning how to stimulate hair growth.

hair loss treatment
Inconsistent use of different products for the hair can certainly cause hair fall and other hair problems like split ends and thinning hair. Certain types of conditioners, shampoos, gels and the likes contain harsh ingredients that can likely contribute damaging effects to the hair. It is really important to acquire products that are gentle and mild and to use these products regularly.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu enjoys Obama's support (Time.com)

Even before President Barack Obama delivered a speech bidding the leaders gathered at the U.N. General Assembly to see the world through Israeli eyes, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in excellent spirits. He wandered into the rear of the Boeing 767 El Al outfitted to carry the head of Israel's government and confidentially informed the assembled reporters that he had slept soundly for seven hours, but, really, that was about it.

"I have nothing to give," Netanyahu said.

"You are expected to give territory," a reporter replied. Laughter on both sides of the aisle. (See photos in "Inside the West Bank Settlements.")

A few hours later, having landed in New York and heard Obama's speech, the Israeli delegation was feeling even better. A senior Netanyahu aide said the Palestinian delegation was so taken aback by Obama's speech that a senior aide to Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas had broached a new possibility: Stop settlement construction for three months, and perhaps direct negotiations can resume.

The specific overture could not be confirmed, but disappointment was clearly the dominant Palestinian reaction to Obama's remarks. "It was predictably depressing to hear the President laud the newfound freedom of the peoples of South Sudan, Cote d'Ivoire, Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, while telling the Palestinians that their freedom depended on their jumping through hoops held up by their Israeli occupiers and their American friends," said longtime Palestinian adviser Rashid Khalidi, of Colombia University.

Much has been made of Obama's promise to use U.S. veto power in the Security Council to block a Palestinian bid for full U.N. membership. Abbas plans to submit such an application on Friday, when he makes his own speech to the General Assembly, in hopes that U.N. recognition of Palestinian sovereignty will level the playing field in negotiations to end Israel's 44-year occupation.(See photos of Palestinian-Israeli clash in the West Bank.)

But the focus of U.S. and Israeli diplomatic warfare this week has been concentrated on ensuring the Palestinians don't muster the nine affirmative votes needed to pass the 15-member body and trigger a U.S. veto. Palestinian Authority foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki claimed six yes votes as of Wednesday, and predicted the final three will come on line by the time Abbas speaks on Friday.

A key swing vote is held by Gabon, the west-central African nation of just 1.5 million people. Al-Maliki said the Gabonese were coming the Palestinians' way, but Netanyahu was to meet with President Ali-Ben Bongo Ondimba on Wednesday afternoon, having seen the president of Colombia in the morning. Netanyahu's schedule also called for lobbying the leaders of Greece and Portugal on Thursday. His Assembly address is also on Friday, a couple of hours after Abbas speaks.

Netanyahu's Wednesday docket included a meeting with Obama. The allies convened after the President's speech, first in front of cameras, then behind closed doors. But even between the expressions of mutual regard and fellow feeling, the lobbying continued.

"I think the Palestinians want to achieve a state through the international community, but they are not prepared yet to give peace to Israel in return," Netanyahu said, glancing at Obama. "And my hope is there will are other leaders - responsible leaders - in the world who will heed your call, and oppose this effort to shortcut peace negotiations and in fact avoid them."

"Now I know that these leaders are under enormous pressure," Netanyahu added, "and I know from personal experience that the automatic majority is against Israel. But..." But after weeks of distressing diplomatic developments for the Jewish State - alliances in Turkey and Egypt on the rocks, momentum building for the Palestinian statehood bid - Israel at least appeared to be having a good day. Netanyahu was scheduled to talk a bit more about it at a mid-afternoon press briefing, but it aides said it was cancelled to make room for another meeting.

Obama to outline plan overriding education law (AP)

WASHINGTON ? States are about to get some guidance from President Barack Obama about how they can get around provisions in the Bush-era No Child Left Behind law ? a step the administration has undertaken to effectively gut the law since Congress had been slow to rewrite it.

In advance of Obama's speech Friday, Education Secretary Arne Duncan has said states would be able to seek waivers around requirements in the law if they can meet certain requirements the White House favors. He has said the emphasis will be more on growth than actual test scores, but revealed few specifics on how the plan would work.

The No Child Left Behind passed in 2001 with widespread bipartisan support and much fanfare. It sought to hold schools more accountable for student performance and get better qualified teachers in classrooms. When schools were deemed as failing after set periods of time, extra tutoring and school choice have been offered to students, under the law.

A component of the law that said all students must be proficient in math and reading ? meaning all students must by 2014 meet grade level standards in those subject areas ? has been hugely unpopular. Critics say the law created too much of an emphasis in classrooms on standardized tests with stakes so high that it may have even created an environment where school officials in some districts opted to cheat.

Duncan has warned that 82 percent of schools next year could fail to reach proficiency requirements, and thus be labeled as a "failure." Duncan has said it's "dishonest" for schools to receive the label if they are showing real improvements, and the law is creating a "slow-motion educational train wreck." He's also said that many states under the law have lowered standards instead of making them more rigorous and that the law fails to differentiate between a high-performing school with one or two subgroups underperforming and a low-performing school where everyone is struggling.

The law has been due for a re-write since 2007, and Obama and Duncan had asked that it be overhauled by the beginning of this school year. But a growing ideological divide in Congress in recent years has only complicated efforts to do so.

The GOP-led House education committee has forwarded three bills that would overhaul aspects of it, but has yet to fully tackle some of the more contentious issues such as teacher effectiveness and accountability. Key Democrats on education issues on Capitol Hill, such as Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, and Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., have said they understand why the administration is moving forward with its plan.

But Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., who chairs the House education committee, has questioned if Duncan even has the authority to offer waivers to states in exchange for such changes. He's said the president has allowed "an arbitrary timeline" to dictate when Congress should get the law rewritten, and that the committee needs more time to develop its proposals, which it is doing. And, Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., the ranking Republican on the Senate committee with oversight over education, said the plan represents a shift in power from states to the federal government.

Duncan has said his plan would not undermine what Congress is doing because the waivers could serve as a bridge until Congress acts.

Train derails in Germany after hitting car

Nearly 50 people were injured when a regional train derailed after hitting a car in eastern Germany on Tuesday, police said.

The train crashed into the car that was hit by another vehicle and pushed onto the tracks in Lauterbach, between Leipzig and Chemnitz, said federal police spokesman Torsten Henkel.

The driver of the car managed to get out before the accident, but the train couldn't stop in time, Henkel said.

He said three of the train cars derailed and one tipped over on its side, injuring nine people seriously. Another 40 people received minor injuries.

Rescue crews were on the scene and helicopters flew the most seriously injured to local hospitals for treatment.

German railway operator Deutsche Bahn says train traffic has been rerouted.

(AP) ? Kellen Moore was just about perfect again, throwing for 455 yards and five touchdowns to lead No. 4 Boise State to a 40-15 victory over Toledo on Friday night.

Moore misfired on his first two throws but didn't miss many after that, connecting on 32 of 42 passes.

Still, the Broncos' offense sputtered early after not playing for nearly two weeks following their season-opening win against Georgia.

It looked for a while as if Toledo (1-2) might give Boise State a scare just six days after the Rockets came within a play or two of knocking off No. 17 Ohio State. But the Rockets couldn't stop Moore.

He appeared to be playing pitch and catch at times, spreading short throws to nine different receivers all over the field.

The Broncos (2-0) were leading 13-6 when they got the ball back with 1:22 left in the first half and marched right down the field for a key touchdown.

Moore connected on six consecutive passes to get down to the 1. He then lofted a throw into the corner to Tyler Shoemaker for a little breathing room.

Moore also tossed a 26-yard pass to Shoemaker to give the Broncos a 7-6 lead with 6:56 left in the first quarter. On their next possession, Doug Martin dashed through Toledo's defense on a screen pass for a 71-yard score.

Moore's only glaring error came at end of the third quarter, when he was intercepted by Jermaine Robinson. He also missed a play earlier in the period after he stumbled while landing during a throw. But he came back on Boise's next possession.

Moore also was impressive in the Broncos' opening 35-21 victory against Georgia. He finished with the highest completion percentage (82.6) in school history for a quarterback making more than 30 attempts in a game.

Boise State came into Toledo hoping to get its running game after rushing for just 129 yards against the Bulldogs. But the Broncos had only 26 yards on the ground in the first half. Leading rusher Martin finished with 70 yards on 19 carries.

Toledo kept it close early on, but had a couple of costly mistakes. The Rockets dropped a sure touchdown pass in the first half and fumbled inside the Broncos' 10 in the third quarter.

It was the first time the Rockets lost to a Top 25 team at home in five games. The Broncos, though, were the highest-ranked team to play in the Glass Bowl.

Boise State got back one of three players suspended two weeks ago by the NCAA for undisclosed reasons ? starting safety Cedric Febis. They didn't know he'd be available until just two days ago.

Febis, who didn't start, finished with four tackles.
