Arkansas Fisheries Society Promotes Various 'Fish Culture' Interests ...

The Bear State, the Land of Opportunity and the Wonder State have all been past nicknames of Arkansas. The Arkansas Fisheries Society takes pride in Arkansas? current nickname of the Natural State as it aims to utilize the state?s natural water resources and wildlife for environmental purposes.

There are over 100 American Fisheries Society chapters nationwide, with a total of over 9,000 members.

?The mission of the American Fisheries Society is to improve the conservation and sustainability of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems by advancing fisheries and aquatic science and promoting the development of fisheries professionals,? said Dustin Lynch, Ph.D. student and AFS president. ?We promote interest in this through activities such as involving education, recreation and environmental cleanup.?

The national organization was founded in 1870 as the American Fish Culturists? Association, according to the national website. The dues are $20 for a student member and $80 for a regular member.

?The Arkansas Fisheries society at the UA currently has around 15 members,? Lynch said. ?People can join by sending a message to the AFS Facebook page with email contact info, and we will include them on our mailing list with time and place for the meetings.?

The UA chapter of AFS is also involved with the state chapter, and in September of 2013, the national AFS meeting will be held in Little Rock, Ark.

?This past spring, several members of the club attended the Arkansas chapter of the American Fisheries Society meeting,? said Brad Austin, biological sciences Ph.D. student. ?At the meeting, members learned about research in the fields of stream ecology and fisheries, providing an experience that members would not normally get in the classroom.?

The Natural State has hundreds of lakes to fish in, according to Arkansas.com, but many people are still foreign to the sport. AFS is mainly comprised of experienced members who are avid about having new members engage in their hobby. AFS envisions a future where worldwide fishery? production is optimized and sustained while structural and functional conditions of marine, freshwater and estuarine ecosystems are maintained, according to the national website.

?Currently, our membership consists mainly of undergraduate and graduate students within the department of biological sciences,? said Brad Austin, biological sciences Ph.D. student. ?So, one of our goals is to increase our membership, bringing in members from across campus.?

AFS has a division specifically for ?fish culture,? which was formed in 1974, according to the national AFS website. The local chapter in Arkansas also participates in promoting and engaging in fish culture.

?Fish culture refers to advancing cultivation technology of aquatic organisms for food, commercial and recreational fisheries enhancement, ornamental purposes, and conservation, emphasizing things like nutrition, economics, breeding, et cetera,? Lynch said.

The AFS national website has a tab for job postings so that members have the opportunity to apply for graduate assistant, research and full-time jobs within the organization?s many fields.

?This RSO has provided the ability to invite speakers in to talk about their work in the field of fisheries management,? Austin said. ?I think this is good for myself and other members because it makes us aware of the potential jobs that we are preparing ourselves for in the fields of fisheries management and stream ecology.?

The Arkansas Fisheries Society is close in friendship among its members, but it is also involved with other RSOs on campus.

The club assisted in putting on a booth with Springfest 2011 with the biological graduate student association, Austin said. ?With our booth, BGSA members talk about the impacts of improper waste disposal and not recycling our trash on the environment, while the AFS club focuses on the diversity of organisms that can be found in local streams, and in the past our booth has included live fish and bugs that kids can touch and/or hold.?

The RSO began in the spring of 2011, and since then it has focused on creating clearer lakes. Members participate in cleaning up the area around Lake Fayetteville every semester. ASF allows those who enjoy the outdoors of Arkansas to be in an organization that brings a diverse group of fish culture interests together.

?The types of people who join this organization are varied and have a wide variety of interests and reasons for joining,? Lynch said. ?A lot of people are primarily into sport fishing for recreation, and game fish species. I actually am not a fisherman myself and have more of an interest in smaller non-game stream fish, their ecology and conservation. It?s an organization that encompasses a lot of different interests.?

Mitt Romney's Loss Is Comprehensive Immigration Reform's Gain

By: Marc A. Wites, Wites & Kapetan, P.A.

In recent years legal status, and an eventual pathway to citizenship, for millions of hard working illegal immigrants has been repeatedly blocked by the conservative wing of the Republican Party.? Even when President George W. Bush attempted to overhaul the United State?s immigration policy with the proposed Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007, his efforts were blocked by his fellow republicans in Congress.? However, with the re-election of President Barack Obama, who won 71% of the Latino vote, the Republicans are changing their tune.

On NBC?s Meet the Press, Democratic Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York announced that he and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham are working with their colleagues to reach a consensus on immigration reform, and hope to pass a new law this year. Although short on details, Schumer explained that the plan will include first securing the borders to prevent more illegal immigration; providing legal immigrants with proper documentation required for employment; allowing immigration for those that contribute to the US economy, whether as engineers or farm workers; and establishing a pathway to citizenship the requires immigrants to learn English, have a job, not commit crimes and ?go to the back of the line.? ?The Republican House Speaker John Boehner made similar comments in a recent interview with ABC News, stating that he was confident that President Obama and the Congress can find common ground to resolve the country?s immigration issues.

The Republicans apparent softening position on immigration is a one hundred and eighty degree turn from their past. ?In 2007 when Bush?s immigration bill failed, 37 Republicans voted against it. They complained that allowing what Republicans have termed ?amnesty? would reward lawbreakers who entered the country illegally.

The same sentiment prevented President Obama from passing immigration reform during his first term. As a result, President Obama signed an Executive Order that created a new program called Deferred Action, which is administered by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (?U.S.C.I.S?). It allows qualifying individuals to apply for deferred deportation action for two years, subject to renewal. Many of its provisions mirror those in the proposed ?Dream Act? which Senate Republicans blocked in 2010, but which remained a prominent item on the President?s agenda. While not identical to the Dream Act, the newly-announced program is available to individuals who (1) are at least sixteen years old, but no older than thirty, (2) have been brought to the U.S. before they were sixteen, (3) have lived in the U.S. for at least the five continuous years before their application, and (4) be currently enrolled in school, have graduated from high school, received a G.E.D., or have been honorably discharged from the armed forces.

Many believe that it was this Executive Order, which demonstrated President Obama?s commitment to the immigrant community that allowed Democrats to win the Latino vote and secure the President?s re-election. Attorney Alex Kapetan of Wites & Kapetan agrees. Mr. Kapetan, who directs Wites & Kapetan?s immigration practice, explained that South American immigrants are smart, hard working people, and they are well aware that it was the Republicans that for years have blocked immigration reform. ?The Republicans ignored the practical reality that you just can?t round up 11 million people and send them back to their home country, and likewise ignored that those Americans of Latino descent would not look kindly upon Republican obstructionism and would show their displeasure at the polls?, stated Kapetan.

Republicans seem to feel that Mitt Romney?s defeat is a message from the Latino community. Whether because they realize that to win future elections in the United States will require a candidate to have the support of the immigrant community, or because they have realized that millions of illegal immigrants already here simply want to work, pay taxes and support their families, its seems that real change may be on the horizon.? Most Americans agree that we must secure our borders, stop illegal immigration, and deport those that enter our country illegally. At the same time, the country?s current illegal immigrant population is here because the United States failed to enact and enforce immigration laws that would stop illegal immigration and reward those that come to America and contribute to our great country. Let us hope that the Republicans have realized that they must work with Democrats to find solutions to all of America?s problems, and perhaps we?ll find that comprehensive immigration reform is on the top of their list.

Marc A. Wites is an attorney with Wites & Kapetan, P.A., a South Florida based law firm with offices throughout the country.? The firm?s practice areas include immigration, and their staff speaks Spanish and Portuguese.

Syrian rebels take airbase

By Reuters

AMMAN -- Syrian rebels said on Sunday they had captured a helicopter base east of Damascus after an overnight assault, their latest gain in a costly battle to unseat President Bashar al-Assad that is drawing nearer to his seat of power.

The Marj al-Sultan base, 15 km (10 miles) from the capital, is the second military facility on the outskirts of the city reported to have fallen to Assad's opponents this month.

Activists said rebels had destroyed two helicopters and taken 15 prisoners.

"We are coming for you Bashar," a rebel shouted in an internet video of what activists said was Marj al-Sultan. Restrictions on non-state media meant it could not be verified.

The rebels have been tightening their hold on farmland and urban centers to the east and northeast of Damascus while a major battle has been underway for a week in the suburb of Daraya near the main highway south.

"We are seeing the starting signs of a rebel siege of Damascus," veteran opposition campaigner Fawaz Tello said from Berlin. "Marj al-Sultan is very near to the Damascus Airport road and to the airport itself. The rebels appear to be heading toward cutting this as well as the main northern artery to Aleppo."

Assad's core forces, drawn mainly from his minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has dominated power in Syria for nearly five decades, are entrenched in the capital.

They also have devastating air superiority although they have failed to prevent rebels increasing their presence on the edge of the capital and in neighborhoods on the periphery.

A Syrian government air strike on the rebel-held village of Deir al-Asafir, 12 km (8 miles) east of Damascus, killed 10 children on Sunday, opposition activists said.

Internet video footage also showed residents collecting young bodies hit by shrapnel. A sobbing woman picked up the lifeless body of a girl, while the bodies of two boys were shown in the back seat of a car.

"None of those killed were older than 15 years old. There are two women among 15 people wounded," said Abu Kassem, an activist in the village told Reuters.

A Western diplomat following the fighting said Assad still had the upper hand. "The army will allow positions to fall here and there, but it can still easily muster the strength to drive back the rebels where it sees a danger," the diplomat said.

"The rebels are very short of international support and they do not have the supplies to keep up a sustained fight, especially in Damascus."

Iran said Turkey's request to NATO to deploy Patriot defensive missiles near its border with Syria would add to problems in the region, where Iran is pitted against mostly Sunni Turkey and Gulf Sunni powers.?

Iran's Shi'ite rulers have stepped up support for Assad while Sunni Arab powers helped forge a new opposition coalition this month recognised by France and Britain as the sole representative of the Syrians.

Syria has called the missile request "provocative", seeing it as a first step toward a no-fly zone over Syrian airspace which the opposition is seeking to help them hold territory against an enemy with overwhelming firepower from the air.

Most foreign powers are reluctant to go that far.

NATO has said the possible deployment of the missiles was purely defensive. The U.S.-led Western alliance has had some talks on the request but has yet to take a decision.

Turkey fears security on its border may crumble as the Syrian army fights harder against the rebels, some of whom have enjoyed sanctuary in Turkey in their 20-month-old revolt against Assad's rule.

Ankara has scrambled fighter jets and returned fire after stray Syrian shells and mortar bombs from heavy fighting along the border landed in its territory.

More than 120,000 Syrian refugees are sheltering in camps in southern Turkey and more are expected with winter setting in and millions of people estimated to be short of food inside Syria.

Abu Mussab, a rebel operative in the area of Hajar al-Aswad in south Damascus, said the opposition fighters had given up expecting a no-fly zone. "The bet is now on better organization and tactics," he said.

The video said by activists to have been filmed at the Marj al-Sultan base showed rebel fighters carrying AK-47 rifles.

An anti-aircraft gun was positioned on top of an empty bunker and a rebel commander from the Ansar al-Islam, a major Muslim rebel unit, was shown next to a helicopter.

"With God's help, the Marj al-Sultan airbase in eastern Ghouta has been liberated," the commander said in the video. Eastern Ghouta, a mix of agricultural land and built-up urban areas, has been a rebel stronghold for months.

Damaged mobile radar stations could be seen on hilltops, with rebels waiving as they walked around the compound.

Footage from Saturday evening showed rebels firing rocket-propelled grenades at the base, and what appeared to be a helicopter engulfed in flames.

Last week rebels briefly captured an air defence base near the southern Damascus district of Hajar al-Aswad, seizing weapons and equipment before pulling out to avoid retaliation from Assad's air force.

Flashpoints in 'fiscal cliff' negotiations

There are numerous hurdles, big and small, in front of President Barack Obama and lawmakers on Capitol Hill as they seek a budget and tax agreement to avoid economy-rattling tax increases and automatic spending cuts known as the "fiscal cliff." They include:

?Taxes. Obama insists on increasing taxes on upper-income earners and he's proposed raising the rates paid on family income over $250,000, with a boost in the top rate from 35 percent to 39.6 percent. GOP leaders vow to block any increase in tax rates but say they could support revenue increases as part of a tax reform plan that curbs tax breaks and uses the resulting revenue to both lower rates and defray the deficit. That approach, however, is opposed by many tea party GOP conservatives who have signed a pledge to oppose any tax increase.

?Entitlements. Big benefit programs like Medicare, Social Security and the Medicaid health program for the poor ? called entitlements because participation is based on eligibility criteria ? are major flash points. As a condition of voting for higher revenues, Republicans are demanding fundamental entitlement reforms such as increasing the Medicare eligibility age from 65 to 67, making wealthier seniors pay more for Medicare, and a less generous inflation adjustment for Social Security. Those ideas were discussed in negotiations in the summer of 2011 but Democrats seem to be signaling a harder line now.

?War spending. Obama and Capitol Hill Democrats want to claim $1 trillion or so in savings from the drawdown of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as budget cuts. Many Republicans see the attempt as a gimmick since the savings are occurring anyway.

?Defense budget. Some Democrats want further cuts to the Pentagon on top of a 10-year $487 billion cut taken as part of last summer's budget and debt pact. Obama, however, has not proposed further cuts and GOP budget hawks swear they would hold the line against any further attempt to squeeze the military budget.

Dot Earth Blog: In Defense of Sustained Research on Fusion

Stewart C. Prager, the director of the Department of Energy?s?Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory?and a professor of astrophysical sciences at Princeton University, here offers a fresh defense?of continued substantial support for research on extracting usable energy from nuclear fusion.

The magnificent lasers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory?s National Ignition Facility are aimed to compress a pellet of fusion fuel such that it ?ignites? ? converts the energy of the lasers that bombard the pellet into fusion energy. The lasers work spectacularly well but the problem of fusion ignition is scientifically rich and complex. So far at least, the pellets have not yet behaved as expected and the milestone of ignition has not yet been achieved. This, of course, should not dull interest in the American inertial confinement fusion program: Not achieving a major scientific result by a pre-determined and artificial deadline is far from a failure.

Further, the fact that conquering this complex problem in laser fusion has not been ?on schedule? has nothing to say about progress in magnetic fusion ? it has been and continues to be remarkable.

Those with a long memory will recall the very early optimism about fusion energy that existed in the late 1950s and 1960s. On the heels of the quick success in moving fission energy forward, it was thought practical fusion would follow closely behind. Instead, the world?s scientists ran into an unexpected barrier ? the immense physics complexity and seeming impossibility of taming fusion plasmas.

The ensuing decades have seen an intense scientific focus on what is truly a grand scientific challenge. Scientists now are teasing out the secrets of complex multi-scaled layers of turbulence in plasmas, the movement of particles through those plasmas, their interaction with magnetic fields, and numerous other phenomena that impact the plasma?s ability to be harnessed as an energy source. This focus in magnetic fusion has driven the development of a new scientific field, plasma physics, with huge benefits for science in general ? from understanding cosmic plasmas to employing these hot, ionized gases for computer chip manufacturing.

On the energy front, we have advanced from fusion energy production of milliwatts in the 1970s to 16 megawatts (for a duration of 1 second) in the 1990s. With our existing underpowered machines, magnetic fusion scientists are producing and producing close to fusion energy-grade plasmas around the world on a daily basis. We are confident that abundant fusion energy can be produced on a very large scale and are now focused on the remaining physics and engineering challenges to make it practical and attractive.

The next major experimental step in magnetic fusion is ITER ? the international experiment that will generate 500 megawatts of fusion power, at a physical scale of a power plant. Under construction in France, ITER will begin operation within ten years. It involves participation of the entire developed world, with the ITER partners representing the governments of half the world?s population. The scientific basis for ITER was separately scrutinized and approved by scientific panels in each of these nations. ITER is large, complex, and full of challenges. But, the likelihood of scientific success is high.

Most nations involved in ITER have robust fusion research programs that are essential to tackle other key scientific and technical issues. With these accompanying programs, we would be ready to operate a demonstration fusion power plant following ITER about 25 years from today.

The charge by some that both inertial and magnetic fusion have been beset with failure is unwarranted. These include remarks in a commentary by Dr. Burton Richter in the Oct. 18 Dot Earth blog: ?Both approaches have gone from failure to ever larger failure, but each time a great deal has been learned??

In fairness, the comment is preceded by brief, informative technical capsules. As a fusion-knowledgeable scientist who does not work in fusion energy research, Dr. Richter includes some supportive comments for the fusion program, tempered by discerning skepticism. But, for fusion scientists, Dr. Richter?s comments on failure are difficult to understand. We are unaware of any major project failures in magnetic fusion research. Quite the opposite: One of the key reasons that ITER was funded across the world is that a series of ever larger experiments have been so successful as to provide confidence that the yet larger ITER will be similarly successful.

Other commentary has appeared, offering incorrect information. In a separate Dot Earth commentary concerning magnetic fusion on Oct. 19, Dr. Robert Hirsch, an administrator of the fusion energy program at the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in the 1970s, offers views reflecting the state of the field at the time of his departure from the AEC some 35 years ago. His view is framed by stating that fusion must be made practical, which means economically and technologically attractive. This is certainly correct and indeed, the criteria for such practicality have provided significant guidance to fusion research for decades. Dr. Hirsch cites a series of challenges that he thinks are roadblocks, but are not. He worries that the energy stored by superconducting magnets poses a serious threat and regulatory burden. This is not so. ITER has proven otherwise. France?s strict nuclear regulatory authorities have concluded the magnets pose no radiological safety concerns for the public. Dr. Hirsch states that the radioactive materials of a fusion reactor will be a major problem. This also is not so. The amount and toxicity is orders of magnitude less than for fission. Dr. Hirsch would be interested to learn that the rigorous French licensing regime is very successfully nearing completion. Licensing, although requiring significant efforts, will not be a barrier to fusion.

Some, like Dr Hirsch, have suggested that fusion machines are so large and complex that they will never be cost competitive. No one knows the ultimate costs, but our best engineering analyses indicate that, with some luck, fusion can indeed be cost- competitive. As an alternative to the mainline approaches to fusion energy, Dr. Hirsch puts forth his research idea from the 1970s of inertial electrostatic confinement (IEC). I agree that the fusion program very much needs to pursue multiple approaches, even within magnetic fusion. But extensive peer review has found IEC far more difficult to achieve than the ITER and related approaches in magnetic fusion.

Fusion is a nearly ideal energy source ? essentially inexhaustible, clean, safe, and likely available to all nations. When proven practical, it will transform our energy future. At this moment, research investment by the rest of the world ? China, Korea, the EU ? is surging in magnetic fusion, while the U.S.?investment is stagnating. The U.S. is at a turning point. We either maintain our long-developed leadership position in this energy and science frontier, or slip behind as other nations take the fruit of decades of scientific research ? much of it from the U.S. ? and convert it into a practical energy source for powering the world.

Drink Up at SIP | Food Republic

Last Wednesday, I had the chance to visit SIP tea shop at the 3rd floor of Farmer?s Cubao. If you will observe closely, you?ll notice that it?s not just an average tea store you visit everyday. Let?s discover things the store offers:

SIP Tea

SIP is the only tea shop in the Philippines that use ultra premium tea leaves i.e. full leaf pekoe leaves, particularly the orange pekoe. These leaves are found in India and China. It is sweet and a bit floral , but even so, it still has body enough to stand up different milk tea flavors, making it the best kinds of leaves you can use for making milk teas. Another thing, SIP also uses teas that are classified TGFOP.

What?s your SIP tea flavor?

Flavored Tea (just tea, no milk)

  • Green tea, Black tea (Medium ? P65, Large ? P75)
  • Passion fruit, Mango, Lychee, Strawberry, Blueberry, Lemon, Wintermelon (M-P85, L-P95)
  • Yakult, Lemon Yakult, Lychee Yakult, Raspberry Yakult (L-P105)

Milk Tea (if fresh or soy, add P10)

  • Green milk tea, Milk tea (M-P70, L-P80)
  • Caramel milk tea, Chocolate milk tea, Mango milk tea, Strawberry milk tea, Hazelnut milk tea, Honey milk tea (M-P90, L-P100)

Remix (SIP exclusive drinks)

  • Citreat (L-P125)
  • Roasted lemon bush (M-P100, L-P115)
  • Himalayan?(M-P100, L-P115)
  • Handmade taro (M-P100, L-P110)

Chappuccino

  • Green, Black, Mango, Chocolate, Strawberry (M-P100, L-P110)

Each drink comes with 1 Topping (your choice) except yakult and chappuccino.

  • Sago
  • Egg pudding
  • Coffee jelly
  • Caramel jelly
  • Triple jelly
  • White jelly
  • Lychee nata
  • Green apple nata
  • Pineapple nata

You can also opt for Premium Toppings:

  • Strawberry sago
  • Passion fruit sago
  • Aloe vera
  • Citrus
  • Grass jelly

The Preparation:

Preparing your tea drink is not that easy. SIP makes it a point to give you the service and beverage you deserve. Instead of brewing, they steep the teas.

Brewing uses high temperatures of water (210-220 degrees). In other words, it burns the tea, making it bitter and carcinogenic, thus giving you cancer.

Steeping, on the other hand, only uses 180 degrees or less (depending on the tea). It dips the tea leaves in the hot water for a long period of time to release the flavor, aroma, and antioxidants into the water therefore producing a very good tasting tea.

Did I say that they only use natural flavorings instead of alcohol based flavoring and powders that can ruin the awesomeness of the tea? :)

Things To Nibble:

Honeycomb waffle, Fried Siomai, Chicken Chop, Veggie Spring Rolls, Shrimp Crackers

Aside from beverages, here are some of the snacks you can nibble while sipping in on your SIP milk tea:

  • Honeycomb Waffle (P80)
  • Fried Siomai
  • Chicken Chops (P85)
  • Veggie Spring Rolls, 3 pcs (P75)
  • Shrimp Crackers

Go visit and have a date with your friends and loved ones at SIP tea shop. They have 8 operating branches, to date, but I was informed that they will be having their 9th outlet in Makati soon :)

Salvador Dali Etching Donated Anonymously to Goodwill in Washington State

Goodwill is auctioning the Dali on its website until Monday: bidding is now $10k+

Michael Martinez CNN

(CNN) -- When an anonymous donor gave art to the Goodwill as an early holiday gift this month, the staff thought it was junk.

?

"Across the board they thought it was ugly," said Shea Munroe, who sorts the art and collectibles donated at Goodwill Industries in Federal Way, Washington.

Co-workers told her: "What is that? And why would anybody want that?"

The art is actually a Salvador Dali original, by the master surrealist who in his day relished the role of public provocateur with his mind-bending imagery.

The work is a colored etching, and the framed piece even features the familiar Dali motif of a melting watch, placed on the wrist of a pointing hand.

Its title is "Reflection" or "Reflections," from "The Cycles of Life Suite," and the art is signed by Dali and numbered "126/150." The work is also labeled as an "etching and photolithography from collage."

Munroe was familiar with Dali, and she researched the work and its attached letter of authenticity.

She confirmed she had something special, though several co-workers knew nothing of the surrealist, not even his famously flamboyant moustache.

"This is probably the real deal," Munroe said of her discovery of the Dali work. "The manager knew who he was right away, and we were both really excited."

Goodwill is now auctioning the art on its website. As of late Friday afternoon, the bidding reached $10,505. Goodwill has noted that the artwork's paper "has some warping, as if from humidity," with some discolored speckling to one part of the matting and a few deep scratches and scuffs to the glass and frame, the website says.

The online auction ends Monday at 7:30 p.m. PST.

Goodwill doesn't know the donor, who managed to sneak away during a busy time at the drop-off facility, Munroe said.?

But the donor kept intact the back of the frame, which contained an envelope with a certificate of authenticity and registration number from a defunct gallery in North Hollywood, Ca.

An appraiser retained by Goodwill also confirmed the authenticity of the Dali, and the charitable organization also ensured the art wasn't stolen, said Amanda Bedell, spokeswoman for Goodwill in Tacoma, Wash. The nonprofit provides employment and training programs to people with disabilities and disadvantages, and the group sells donated goods in more than 2,600 stores.

Goodwill held on to the Dali for a week in case someone claimed it was accidentally donated, Bedell said.

"We don't know the background of what the circumstances were," Bedell said of the donation. "It's a steady stream of people coming in. It's not necessarily documented what every person comes in with."

About 74 million people in the United States and Canada donate annually to Goodwill, Bedell said.

"We have a very busy donation door, and we have several people who work that door," Munroe said, explaining how the donor was able to remain unknown.

When a signed piece of art arrives at a donation center, Goodwill sets it aside for special review, Munroe said.

Most donated goods are sold at Goodwill stores, but prizes such as the Dali are auctioned online -- to maximize their value, said Munroe, who works for Goodwill's online department.

The Dali is the highlight of her past six years of working for the nonprofit, in addition to her two years of service in the 1970s, she said.?

Until this month, the biggest donations she oversaw were professional 35-mm cameras that fetched $8,400 on Goodwill's auction website, she said.

To the anonymous donor, Munroe, 58, offered a message: "I would say thank you for helping us with our mission because we have a lot of programs that put people to work, and it's people right here in the communities."

The bidding for the Dali piece is still short of the most prized art auctioned by Goodwill: A Frank Weston Benson oil painting, dated 1924 and also donated anonymously, was sold online by Goodwill in 2006 for $165,002.

History Dept Chair presents paper at Queen's University, Belfast

? November 16, 2012Posted in: News

On November 10, 2012, Dr Yaqoob Khan Bangash, Chairperson, Department?of History at Forman Christian College, presented a paper entitled??Non-Territorial Autonomy and the Baloch: A Way Forward?? at a special?conference convened on the concept of non-territorial autonomy by the?School of Politics, International Studies and Philosophy at Queen?s?University Belfast, the Department of Central & Eastern European?Studies, University of Glasgow, and European Centre for Minority?Issues (Flensburg, Germany). This policy and theory focused conference?brought experts from all over the world to discuss the possibility of?achieving and maintaining rights for minorities in multi-ethnic?states.

At the conference, Dr Bangash argued that given the nature of the?Baloch problem where federalism and devolution have not worked due to?the security centric approach of the Centre, the applicability of?non-territorial autonomy might provide the way out. Explaining that?the issue is mainly of the ?Baloch? and not of ?Balochistan? in?general, giving autonomy to the Baloch as a people will enable them?to develop specific policies for the uplift of their own community.

Since a large number of Baloch also reside in Karachi, and parts of?Afghanistan, Iran and Oman, this approach could also be utilised?elsewhere. ?Being linked to places where the Baloch actually reside?rather than a demarcated territory, this approach will also placate?the security and secessionist concerns of the central government,?while ensuring that funds for the Baloch will be spent on the Baloch?by fellow Baloch. Dr Bangash is aiming to develop a policy paper on?the issue for further presentation to the government.

NHL, union might try not talking in search of deal

If the NHL and the players' association have run out of things to talk about, how can they ever find a way to make a deal to save the hockey season?

It is a question both sides seem to have trouble answering, and not because they are being guarded or coy. The lockout is in its third month, and there is no obvious path to progress.

There was a hint of optimism after the league and locked-out players met a few times, but the view quickly became bleak. After a one-day break, the sides met Sunday and that brief return to the table also turned badly quickly. They haven't met ? and have barely talked ? since then.

Now NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman has suggested to players' association chief Donald Fehr that they take a two-week break from each other. If talking doesn't work, it is possible that not talking will?

Frustration and a hint of anger have entered the equation. So perhaps a cooling-off period would make some sense before the sides agree to get together again.

"I think what you have seen is disappointment with where we find ourselves in the process," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Friday in an email to The Associated Press. "I don't think it's a case of personal animosity."

That was one of two positive developments on Friday. Daly and NHLPA special counsel Steve Fehr had a brief conversation during the day and planned to talk again over the weekend to discuss the next steps for bargaining.

Any contact qualifies as good news as the lockout drags on.

Staying apart could pose a problem because time has become a major factor. All games through Nov. 30 have already been taken off the schedule, more cancellations are likely within a week, the Winter Classic has been wiped out, the All-Star game is the next big event in jeopardy, and the whole season could be lost, too, in the blink of an eye.

Daly said Thursday that he is more discouraged now that at any other point in the process.

Fehr and the union haven't said whether or not they will agree to trial separation from the league. Publicly, the players have maintained the position that negotiations are the only way to work out differences and get a deal, and that they are willing to meet any time the NHL wants to.

"Of course everyone on the players' side wants to reach an agreement," Steve Fehr said Thursday night. "The players have offered the owners concessions worth about a billion dollars. What exactly have the owners offered the players? We believe that it is more likely that we will make progress if we meet than if we don't. So we are ready to meet.

"If indeed they do not want to meet, it will be at least the third time in the last three months that they have shut down the dialogue, saying they will not meet unless the players meet their preconditions. What does that tell you about their interest in resolving this?"

That came in response to Bettman's suggestion of a break, and other comments by Daly about the tenor of the discussions between the sides.

"Gary suggested the possibility of a two-week moratorium," Daly said. "I'm disappointed because we don't have a negotiating partner that has any genuine interest in reaching an agreement. Zero interest."

The NHL contends that the union has submitted the same proposal multiple times without moving in the league's direction. The union says it has agreed to come down from receiving 57 percent of hockey-related revenues to a 50-50 split. The league wants that to go into effect in the first year of the agreement, while the union wants to get there gradually.

Back in 2005, after the entire 2004-05 season was lost to a lockout, the players' association accepted a salary-cap system for the first time and feels it shouldn't have to bear the brunt of the concessions now after league revenues reached a record high of over $3 billion last season.

"In '04, the gap was huge," said Rangers forward Brad Richards, who attended last week's bargaining sessions. "Very frustrating. Didn't expect to go on this long, didn't need for it to go on this long. They want to create this view that we're so far apart. Only one way to get a deal done. That's the only tactic they know."

Richards organized a benefit skate Friday to help in the relief efforts on Staten Island after Superstorm Sandy, and was joined by several of his teammates. Richards, who signed with the Rangers last offseason, and led them to the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference last postseason partnered with a high school team to organize "Skating for Sandy."

This 62-day lockout has claimed 327 regular-season games, and hope of a new deal and the start of the already-shortened season ? likely of 68 games per team ? on Dec. 1 has been dashed.

Rangers forward Marian Gaborik sees little benefit in taking a break from negotiations.

"I don't know what his mindset is," he said about Bettman.

It is more than just finances preventing a deal. The disagreements over player contract terms have emerged as just as big an impasse.

The NHL wants to limit contracts to five years, make rules to prohibit back-diving contracts the league feels circumvent the salary cap, keep players ineligible for unrestricted free agency until they are 28 or have eight years of professional service time, cut entry-level deals to two years, and make salary arbitration after five years.

Players missed their third pay day of the season Thursday, and the clock is ticking toward more losses. The 2004-05 season was canceled in February. A lockout in 1995 ended in January, leading to a 48-game schedule.

"Different," Gaborik said about this lockout. "The union is much stronger. We have a leader we believe in."

Richmond Tattoo Convestion turns 20 this weekend at Richmond ...

Posted on: 11:13 pm, November 16, 2012, by Raymond Hawkes and Mark Holmberg, updated on: 11:32pm, November 16, 2012

RICHMOND, Va (WTVR)- One of the oldest known art forms has changed dramatically in just the past two decades.

You can see it for yourself this weekend for the 20th Annual Richmond Tattoo Arts Festival at the Greater Richmond Convention Center downtown.

Tattoos have become chic enough for a current exhibit at the Valentine Museum; chic enough for professional folks, big name athletes and stars, as well as just everyday people.

One artist at the convention, who specializes in shades of blacks and grays, has a yearlong waiting list. Her client Friday had a thousand in cash in his pocket ready, if needed, for an evening?s worth of work ? the dog tags of his beloved grandfather who recently died of cancer.

People still get ink that reminds them of important events or people.

But with the new inks and tattooing machines, you can settle for something beautiful ? a work of art that may have no other deeper meaning, or a picture-like portrait of a iconic figure or scene.

Yes, it still hurts. But the stigma is gone. In fact, it?s almost like the rebels are those without a single tattoo.

The convention continues Saturday noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday noon to 7 p.m.? Tattoo artists from around the country are there.

Geology Will Rock You !

The music-video ?Mutual Core? (2011) by Bj?rk, starring hot tectonic forces and sensual strata, is by far not the only examples of how geology and paleontology could inspire musicians and songwriters. There is something for everybody, from rap to classic music, from hard rock to blues, from the Archean to the Anthropocene.

The German music group ?The Ocean? released in 2007 a hard rock album entitled ?Precambrian?, the four single CDs are named after the four erathems of the Precambrian (Hadean/Archaean/Meso- and Neoproterozoic) and the single songs after the single periods (Tonian, Cryogenian,?).

The Precambrian fossils of the Canadian Burgess Shale are one of the most important examples of early macroscopic life forms and based on the popular book ?Wonderful Life? (1989) by paleontologist Stephen J. Gould, Rand Steiger composed in 1994 music for a large orchestra, entitled appropriately ?The Burgess Shale? and featuring fossils like Pikaia and Hallucigenia.

Paleoartist Ray Troll is known best for his surreal artwork, but there is a quite good ?Devonian Blues? written and performed in 2005. The discovery of Tiktaalik in Devonian sediments was also honoured by a song. The band ?Ilium? published an album with the title ?Permian dusk?, featuring various chronostratigraphic-related songs, followed in 2009 by the album ?Ageless Decay? with the ?Eocene Dawning?.

In his animated movie ?Allegro non Troppo? (1976), the Italian cartoonist Bruno Bozzetto uses Maurice Ravel?s ?Bolero? to display a sort of ladder of evolution, punctuated by various geological catastrophes like volcanic eruptions and ice ages.

In the same movie an evolving society of cavemen dances to the ?Danza slavica Nr.7? by Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904)In ?Le carnaval des animaux? (The Carnival of the Animals) by French composer Camille Saint-Sa?ns (1835-1921), also ?the Fossils? and extinct animals have their grand debut.

Dr. Richard ?Geoman? Alley covers various classics, like ?Ring of Fire?, ?Rocking Around the Silicates? and ?Down Doo Bee Doo?. And Marvin Pontiac (1932-1977) simply states ?Bring Me Rocks- to study them?.

Some songs are dedicated in general to geologists ? like ?The Geologists Are Coming!? by the ?Amoeba People?, or paleontologists, but sometimes also to specific geologists, like ?Continental Drift! Alfred Wegener?.

Volcanoes, Hot Lava, pyroclastic surges and earthquakes are also popular topics, especially for Californians with ?Earthquake? performed by Cass Elliot -? even specific fault systems, like the ?San Andreas Fault? got songs. A cave inspired Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) to compose an ouverture.

And of course other geologists have other playlists, like Andrew Alsen or Erik Klemetti? more suggestions are welcome:

Obama, Turkish PM discuss escalating violence in Gaza, Israel

WASHINGTON, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had a telephone discussion on Friday about the escalating violence in Gaza and Israel, the White House said.

Voicing their concerns on the safety of civilians on both sides, the two leaders called for an end to the violence, according to a statement issued by the White House.

Obama and Erdogan agreed that "the continued spiral of violence jeopardizes prospects for a durable, lasting peace in the region," said the statement, adding that Obama had underscored his commitment to advancing the goal of peace in the Middle East.

Prior to Friday's conversation with Erdogan, Obama talked on the phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi respectively on Wednesday about the escalating violence in Gaza.

U.S. State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Thursday that Washington has asked Cairo to use its influence with the Palestinians to help calm the violence.

Fighting has escalated between Palestinian militant groups and Israel. Over the past three days, more than 550 rockets launched from Gaza have landed on Israeli territories, most of them targeting communities in southern Israel.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces have been carrying out air strikes on targets in Gaza. Palestinian hospital officials said 23 Palestinians have been killed and more than 250 injured in more than 400 Israeli air strikes all over the Gaza Strip since Wednesday.

Hedge Funds Load Up on Facebook Shares

Facebook (FB) shares have been red hot in recent days despite the fact that the post IPO lockup expired.

Several high-profile hedge fund managers have taken significant stakes in Facebook (FB) over the last month.

Andreas Halvorsen's Viking Global Management bought 4.1 million shares in the third quarter. In addition, Philippe Laffont's Coatue Management purchased 1.4 million shares.

Other hedge fund managers upped their stake in the world's most popular social network. Chase Coleman's Tiger Global Management sharply increased its Facebook stake to 11.7 million shares from just 2 million three months earlier. Similarly, Patrick McCormack's Tiger Consumer Management increased its stake slightly to 1.8 million shares.

The hedge fund managers were obviously undeterred by the fact that 804 million shares held by former employees and those who sold at the initial public offering are now available on the open market. The total available shares has doubled in recent days. Nonetheless, the stock rocketed 12.6% higher yesterday.

Perhaps the smartest money of all, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen of Andreessen Horowitz appears to be holding on to his shares of FB.

Andreessen Horowitz partner Margit Wennmachers said that they will be holding on to most of their shares.

"We believe in the long-term potential of the company and are holding onto it because of that," she said.

War looms after Hamas rocket kills 3 Israelis

GAZA (Reuters) - A Hamas rocket killed three Israelis north of the Gaza Strip on Thursday, drawing the first blood from Israel as the Palestinian death toll rose to 13 and a military showdown lurched closer to all-out war with an invasion of the enclave.

Israeli warplanes bombed targets in and around Gaza city, where tall buildings trembled. Plumes of smoke and dust furled into a sky laced with the vapor trails of outgoing rockets.

Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi said in a televised address to the nation that Israel's attacks on the Gaza Strip were "unacceptable" and would lead to instability in the region.

In a telephone conversation with U.S. President Barack Obama, Mursi said he had discussed "ways to reach calm and end the aggression".

The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas claimed it had fired a one-ton, Iranian-made Fajr 5 rocket at Tel Aviv in what would be a major escalation, but there was no reported impact in the Israeli metropolis 50 km (30 miles) north of the enclave.

Israel's sworn enemy Iran, which supports and arms Hamas, condemned the offensive begun by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) as "organized terrorism".

Israel was more concerned about the mood in Egypt, whose new Islamist government brokered a truce between the two sides on Tuesday only to see it shattered a day later when Israel assassinated the top Hamas military commander.

Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood which now controls Egypt, Israel's most powerful Arab neighbor and a crucial partner in the 1979 peace treaty that stands between fragile stability and regional chaos.

Cairo had condemned the offensive and recalled its ambassador from Israel.

Israel's ambassador left Cairo on what was called a routine home visit and Israel said its embassy would stay open. The dominant Muslim Brotherhood, spiritual mentor of Hamas, called for a 'Day of Rage' in Arab capitals on Friday.

In Lebanon, the Iranian-backed Shi'ite militia Hezbollah denounced Israel's strikes on Gaza as "criminal aggression" and called on Arab states to "stop the genocide".

Hezbollah has thousands of fighters and some 50,000 rockets in southern Lebanon aimed at the Jewish state, according to the Israeli army. But the northern front remained quiet.

DAY TWO

The Israeli army said 156 targets were hit in Gaza, 126 of them rocket launchers. It said 200 rockets had struck Israel since the start of the operation, 135 of them since midnight.

Israel's Iron Dome interceptor system, which singles out rockets heading for populated areas, shot down 18 rockets in the first hours of day two of Operation Pillar of Defence, it said.

One of those that got through caught its victims before they could reach the blast shelters that are everywhere in the Negev region, target for sporadic Palestinian rocket attacks from Gaza for the past five years.

Israeli police said the three died when a rocket hit a four-storey building in the town of Kiryat Malachi, some 25 km (15 miles) north of Gaza. They were the first Israeli fatalities of the latest conflict to hit the coastal region.

The offensive began on Wednesday when a precision Israeli air strike assassinated Hamas military mastermind Ahmed Al-Jaabari, and Israel shelled the enclave from land, air and sea.

The 13 killed in Gaza included Jaabari and six Hamas fighters plus six civilians, among them a pregnant woman with twins, an 11-month old boy and two infants, according to the enclave's health ministry. Medics reported at least 130 wounded.

At Jaabari's funeral on Thursday, supporters fired guns in the air celebrating news of the Israeli deaths, to chants for Jaabari of "You have won." His corpse was borne through the streets wrapped in a bloodied white sheet. But senior Hamas figures were not in evidence, wary of Israel's warning that they are now considered targets.

Expecting days or more of fighting, Israel warned Hamas that all its men were targets. Israeli warplanes dropped leaflets in Gaza telling residents to keep their distance from militants and Hamas facilities.

"The leaflets stress that Hamas is dragging the region toward violence, and that the IDF is prepared to defend the residents of the State of Israel until quiet is restored to the region," the military said in a statement.

The United States condemned Hamas, shunned by the West as an obstacle to peace for its refusal to renounce violence and recognize Israel.

"There is no justification for the violence that Hamas and other terrorist organizations are employing against the people of Israel," said Mark Toner, deputy State Department spokesman.

The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting late on Wednesday to discuss the Israeli assault. It called for a halt to the violence, but took no action.

In France, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabious said: "It would be a catastrophe if there is an escalation in the region. Israel has the right to security but it won't achieve it through violence. The Palestinians also have the right to a state."

Oil prices rose more than $1 as the crisis grew.

Hamas has said the killing of its top commander would "open the gates of hell" for Israel. It also appealed to neighboring Egypt to halt the "barbaric" assault.

"SAFETY NET"

A second Gaza war has loomed on the horizon for months as waves of Palestinian rocket attacks and Israeli strikes grew increasingly intense and frequent.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, favored in opinion polls to win a January 22 general election, said on Wednesday the Gaza operation could be stepped up.

His cabinet has granted authorization for the mobilization of military reserves if required to press the offensive, dubbed "Pillar of Defence" in English and "Pillar of Cloud" in Hebrew after the Israelites' divine sign of deliverance in Exodus.

Israel's Operation Cast Lead in 2008-2009 began with a week of air attacks and shelling, followed by a land invasion of the blockaded coastal strip, sealed off at sea by the Israeli navy. Some 1,400 Palestinians were killed and 13 Israelis died.

Since the rise of Sunni Islamist power in the Arab Spring, Hamas has been emboldened, viewing Mursi as a "safety net" who will not permit a second Israeli thrashing of Gaza, home to 1.7 million Palestinians.

Israel says it has already destroyed much of Gaza's longer-range rocket stockpiles, an assertion seemingly confirmed when Hamas claims of hits on ambitious targets such as Tel Aviv, Ashdod and Israeli naval craft proved unfounded.

Gaza has an estimated 35,000 Palestinian fighters, no match for Israel's F-16 fighter-bombers, Apache helicopter gunships, Merkava tanks and other modern weapons systems in the hands of a conscript force of 175,000, with 450,000 in reserve.

Today's?total solar eclipse?? the first since July 2010 and the last until March 2015 ? begins at 3:35 p.m. EST (2035 GMT) today, which corresponds to shortly after dawn Wednesday (Nov. 14) local time in Australia. Weather permitting, will be visible from slivers of the continent's Northern Territory and state of Queensland, as well as a large, empty stretch of the Pacific Ocean.

More than 50,000 spectators are expected to watch the celestial event from Queensland, according to tourism officials. But forecasts of cloudy weather may put a damper on their viewing experience, according to media reports.

Most of the world's population will be far from the eclipse's path. But anyone with access to the Internet can follow the action live, for several organizations will provide free webcasts of the alignment of sun and?moon.?Two such outfits are Tourism Tropical North Queensland and the Slooh Space Camera, which will begin their broadcasts at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT) and 2:30 p.m. EST (1930 GMT) on Tuesday, respectively.?

You can watch both webcasts of the total solar eclipse live?here at SPACE.com.

The shadow's path

Tuesday's total eclipse of the sun will begin over the Arnhem Land region of the Northern Territory, where the moon's shadow will touch down at 3:35 p.m. EST (2035 GMT). [Video: Watch Path of Nov. 13-14 Total Solar Eclipse]

From there, the eclipse path moves southeast across the Gulf of Carpentaria to Queensland, darkening the skies over towns such as Mitchell River and Palmerville before reaching the coastal city of Cairns at 3:39 p.m. EST (2039 GMT).

Many eclipse chasers are converging on Cairns, a tourist hotspot on Queensland's northeast coast. The world-famous Great Barrier Reef lies just offshore, and patches of tropical rainforest draw visitors inland as well.?

Shortly after sunrise, skywatchers in Cairns will witness a total?solar eclipse?lasting two minutes. The obscured sun will be just 14 degrees above the horizon at the time, researchers say. (Your clenched fist held at arm's length measures about 10 degrees.)

From Cairns, the moon's shadow will cruise out into the vast Pacific Ocean, with the total eclipse finally petering out 610 miles (980 kilometers) west-northwest of Santiago, Chile, at 6:48 p.m. EST (2348 GMT). The eclipse's path of totality is about 108 miles (174 km) wide and covers 9,000 miles (14,500 km) over a three-hour period.

Warning: If you are planning to watch the total solar eclipse in person, be extremely careful. Never look directly at the sun, either with the naked eye or through telescopes or binoculars without the proper filters. To safely view solar eclipses, you can purchase special solar filters or No. 14 welder's glass to wear over your eyes. Standard sunglasses will NOT provide sufficient protection.

An unforgettable experience

Observers in parts of Asia, the Pacific and western North America were treated to a?"ring of fire" annular eclipse?this past May.

The next total solar eclipse occurs in March 2015 and will be visible from some areas in the North Atlantic region, such as Norway's Svalbard Islands. However, a so-called "hybrid" eclipse ? which shifts between total and annular at different points on the globe ? will come to parts of the Atlantic and central Africa in November 2013.

Observing an eclipse is a special experience most skywatchers ? and scientists ? never forget. Tuesday's event will be the 56th solar eclipse that Williams College astronomer Jay Pasachoff has seen in his career, for example, but he still finds each one thrilling.

"Oh, each one is very exciting ? each in its own way," Pasachoff told SPACE.com via email. "It is very wonderful to be uncovering part of the mysteries about the sun's atmosphere and magnetic field, and to be outdoors surrounded by the darkening of a solar eclipse is a primally fabulous experience."

The eclipse isn't the only celestial treat skywatchers can look forward to this week. The annual Leonid meteor shower, which has produced some truly spectacular shows over the years, peaks overnight Saturday (Nov. 17).

Editor's note:?If you are along the eclipse path in Australia or elsewhere and snap an amazing photo of Tuesday's total solar eclipse that you'd like to share for a possible story or image gallery, please send images, comments and location information to managing editor Tariq Malik at?tmalik@space.com.
