96% Argo

'Argo'. Ben Affleck, take a bow. A magnificent achievement in pacing and tension, bringing an unbelievable true story to life. There's a line towards the beginning, when they're trying to sell The Hollywood Option, that goes something like, "And everybody knows they'd shoot in Stalingrad with Pol Pot directing if it would sell tickets." This cynical undercurrent that still permeates through Hollywood today, arguably more so, grounds this film in a believability that would be hard to artificially create solely for this film. It's one of the many cheeky shots the film takes, having a go at acting, directing and everything in between. Affleck's camera movements are frenetic and clear all at once, swooping, circling and darting rapidly on occasion, most noticeable in the opening hysteria at the embassy. The last twenty or so minutes, where 'Argo' ratchets up the tension, is owed in large to some brilliant editing, switching between the four parties involved, while never needing to cheat the audience in taking them down a false path. There was an audible sign of relief in the theatre when that plane finally takes off! Then there's Ben Affleck the actor. First things first. I have a large man-crush on his beard. Affleck doesn't overplay his character, but he nails the emotional moments, and I was totally on board his crazy plan, with his heart very much in the right place. The supporting cast is insane, but Bryan Cranston and Alan Arkin shine the brightest, getting the killer lines written by Chris Terrio.I loved 'Gone Baby Gone' and 'The Town'. It gives me great pleasure to see Affleck stretching out from his familiar Boston, making something completely different, and getting it so right.

Britain's FTSE 100 falls, spooked by Hurricane Sandy

* FTSE 100 down 0.4 pct, eyes one-month lows

* Miners the biggest drag as Hurricane Sandy hits

* October FTSE volumes set to be 3rd lowest this year

LONDON, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Britain's FTSE 100 opened lower

on Monday, spooked by Hurricane Sandy which has already forced

hundreds of thousands of people on the U.S. East Coast to flee

their homes and has shut the U.S. stock market.

That added extra uncertainty to global financial markets

already suffering from concerns about the health of the world

economy and a relatively gloomy third quarter reporting season,

which has so far seen a third of UK companies miss expectations.

Insurance companies were among the top falling UK blue

chips, dragged down by prospects of hurricane claims, while

heavy-weight energy stocks were dented by a drop in oil prices

as the storm prompted refineries in the region to shut.

By 0840 GMT, the FTSE 100 was down 23.92 points, or 0.4

percent at 5,782.79 points, closing in on a one-month intra-day

low of 5,753.31 points set the previous session.

Sandy, which could become the largest storm to hit the U.S.

mainland, headed for the country's most densely populated area,

threatening destruction and flooding. That prompted the U.S.

stock and options markets to be shut for a weather-related for

the first time since 1985, likely also leading to thin volumes

and thus volatile trading in Europe.

"It looked at the back of last week like markets were

running out steam, the earnings were a drag ... Clearly this

doesn't help. With the U.S. closed today it's another excuse for

people not to do anything and we will get the obvious sectors

marked down," said Ian Williams, strategist at Peel Hunt.

Shares in insurers Old Mutual, Admiral Group

, Aviva and Prudential fell 1.3 to 0.8

percent, with the FTSE 350 non-life insurance sector down 1.8

percent. Heavyweight energy stocks,

meanwhile, shaved 7 points off the UK benchmark index.

The hurricane was likely to delay some U.S. corporates from

reporting earnings, giving markets fewer catalysts to trade on.

"The volumes are dire," said Steve Larkins, head of sales

trading at Seymour Pierce, forecasting that the FTSE 100 could

drift lower towards technical support around 5,850.

Only 4.7 percent of the average 90-day daily trading volumes

has gone through in the first 45 minutes of activity, adding to

already quiet conditions which have not really recovered from a

traditional summer lull.

October is on track to be the third quietest month on the

FTSE 100 this year for volumes, after July and August -- fresh

bad news for the banking sector where lack of financial market

activity has already hit earnings.

Trading updates from Barclays, Lloyds and

RBS are due this week, with investors concerned about

the likelihood of more provisions.

HTC sees lower revenue, margins in fourth-quarter

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC Corp sees around a 14.5 percent fall in revenue in the fourth quarter from the previous three months, worse than analyst forecasts, while its margins will also decline, underlying the challenge it faces to rebuild in the face of stiff competition.

The company said in a statement on Friday that it expects its fourth-quarter revenue to be about T$60 billion ($2.05 billion), down from T$70.2 billion in the third quarter and below expectations of T$74.0 billion in a poll of 23 analysts by Reuters.

HTC also said it expects a gross margin and an operating margin of around 23 percent and 1 percent, respectively, falling from 25 percent and 7 percent in the previous quarter.

The former contract maker has been suffering a sharp decline in its fortunes since the second half of 2011 following a fairytale ride from contract manufacturer to strong global brand with phones based on Google Inc's Android software.

"I see worse shipments in Q4 because there's nothing exciting about HTC's new models; there won't be a high season for it," said Nomura Securities analyst Aaron Jeng, speaking before the announcement.

In the past few weeks, HTC has aggressively rolled out new models to regain market share. It released the "HTC J" targeted at the Japanese market last month and the "HTC One X+", an upgraded version of its high-end flagship model last Tuesday, both running Google's operating system.

Last month, it also introduced two colorful models running Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software, the Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S, among the first in the market.

HTC said earlier this month its third-quarter net profit fell 79 percent, missing forecasts, as its flagship phones failed to keep pace with Apple Inc's iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy range.

Samsung reported on Friday a fourth straight record quarterly profit of $7.4 billion, largely due to strong sales of its Galaxy smartphones.

Some second-tier smartphone vendors such as HTC and Nokia have been struggling with losses or razor-thin profits, though South Korea's LG Electronics Inc said on Wednesday it shipped a record number of smartphones in the third quarter and the division swung back to a profit.

Shares of HTC closed down 4.8 percent on Friday, while the broader market fell 1.8 percent. ($1 = 29.2500 Taiwan dollars)

2 US troops die in apparent Afghan insider attack

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A man in an Afghan police uniform shot and killed two American service members Thursday, the U.S. military said, in what appeared to be the latest in a rash of attacks on international forces this year by their Afghan partners.

It was not immediately clear if the attacker was an Afghan police officer or an insurgent who had donned the disguise to get close to the American troops, said Maj. Lori Hodge, a spokeswoman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

The assailant killed the service members in the southern Uruzgan province in the late morning, she added. A statement from the U.S. force in Afghanistan says the attack is being investigated.

Provincial government spokesman Abdullah Himmat said the assault happened near an Afghan police compound in Khas Uruzgan district.

Before Thursday's assault, 53 international troops had been killed in insider attacks from Afghan soldiers or police so far this year, according to the NATO military coalition.

The Taliban have said they are using the attacks as a specific strategy to drive a wedge between the international coalition and the Afghans. On Wednesday, ahead of the Eid al-Adha holiday, they called for an increase in such assaults.

The killings have stretched to the breaking point a partnership that U.S. and NATO officials consider a key part their exit plan ? preparing the Afghans to take over responsibility for their country's security in just over two years' time. The program, where Afghans and international troops are supposed to work "shoulder to shoulder," is now being reevaluated.

The majority of international combat troops are scheduled to leave Afghanistan by end-2014, although trainers and advisers are expected to remain longer.

Galactic snack time: Stream of stars slowly being ingested by the Milky Way

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, researchers have discovered a band, or stream, of stars believed to be the remnant of an ancient star cluster slowly being ingested by the Milky Way, Earth's home galaxy.

"The Milky Way is constantly gobbling up small galaxies and star clusters," said Ana Bonaca, a Yale graduate student and lead author of a study forthcoming in Astrophysical Journal Letters. "The more powerful gravity of our Milky Way pulls these objects apart and their stars then become part of the Milky Way itself."

Researchers have previously found evidence of the Milky Way eating up dwarf galaxies. Bonaca argues that the newly found stellar stream is the remnant of a star cluster rather than of a larger galaxy, because the stream is very narrow.

"Our discovery is more of a light snack than a big meal for the Milky Way," says Marla Geha, associate professor of astronomy at Yale and a co-author of the study. "Studying this digestion process in detail is important because it gives us new insight into how all galaxies form and evolve."

The new band of stars, or stellar stream, it is the first of its kind found in the southern Galactic sky, a region that has been hard to examine due to a relative lack of deep-sky imaging there. Deeper imaging enables astronomers to detect fainter stars.

Named the Triangulum stream, the newly discovered stellar stream could also help astronomers reconstruct how the Milky Way's mass is distributed, further revealing its dynamic structure.

Galaxies are believed to form hierarchically through the merger of smaller galaxies and still smaller star clusters. Stellar streams form as they are ripped apart by the gravitational force of galaxies. This process may be the primary way galaxies such as the Milky Way grow in mass, the researchers say.

Triangulum was found by searching a region recently surveyed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III), an international collaboration that is mapping the sky through wide-field photometry.

Bonaca, Geha and co-author Nitya Kallivayalil, a Yale postdoctoral fellow, relied specifically on the survey's Data Release 8, which included information about vast new areas of the southern galactic sky.

Research support was provided by the National Science Foundation and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

Marketers Make an Internet Time Machine | Digiday

Scott Greer, digital marketing specialist and?Maureen Higgins digital marketing manager at Nashville-based agency Bohan?started a fun side project in the form of a Tumblr. It?s called Internet Time Machine, and it showcases screenshots of?funny examples of websites from the 1990s and early 2000s, the early days of the Interweb.

Greer and Higgins took time to talk about their Tumblr, why nostalgic content does so well these days, and what the future of the Web looks like.

What gave you guys the idea to start the Tumblr?
Scott Greer: While redesigning our new website, we started talking about old versions of it but couldn?t seem to dig up screenshots anywhere. A co-worker told us about this Web archive site called the Wayback Machine, and then, just for fun, we started searching for some big-name companies to see their outdated website designs from the 1990s and early 2000s. From there, we were pleasantly surprised just how outdated some of the sites were. Fast food restaurants in particular were absolutely hilarious, and that gave us the idea to document some of the best ones with our own Tumblr blog called ?Internet Time Machine.?

What is it about Web artifacts that people like so much?
Maureen Higgins: People find humor in antiquated technology ? I think it reminds us of the progress we?ve made in such a short amount of time. People remember the AOL dial-up noise, and it makes them feel nostalgic towards their first experiences and interactions on the Internet. I myself will hang onto my VCR and Walkman until I am 80.

SG: On the Internet, a website from 2000 feels like it was built in 1900. There is something fascinating about how quickly the Web progresses, and it makes people reminisce very easily about trends of yesteryear. Even something from 2010 can feel outdated, and responsive?design?is a testament to the ever-changing?nature of the Web.

BuzzFeed has a whole section devoted to blasts from the past. Why do you think nostalgic content does so well online?
MH: Thinking about the past is less scary than thinking about the future. People find comfort in the things that made them happy in the past. It?s funny because I think in some ways the Internet ruins nostalgia. Your mind remembers a TV show or a commercial fondly; the Internet allows you to take 5 seconds and actually locate it. Sometimes things we remember as awesome aren?t awesome, and the Internet helps you realize this.

SG:?The Web redefines what nostalgic means. The online world moves so fast that basically anyone who has been alive for the past 20 years or more has a first-hand account of the evolution of the Web. That being said, everyone can relate to what has happened since the days of AOL or MySpace, and it?s incredible to witness something from just five years ago become ?nostalgic? virtually overnight.

What are some defining characteristics of?1990s and early 2000s?websites?
MH: ?Awesomely bad clip art and animated backgrounds. It?s funny because early websites actually seem simpler. Quick navigation and limited page content were key because you?d still have to wait 30 seconds for even the simplest page to load then.

SG: Cheesy animations, excessive use of Times New Roman, and a ton of ?this site is best optimized for Netscape and Internet Explorer,? which is pretty comical in today?s world of Chrome and Firefox.

What trends do you foresee for the Web?
MH: I would say broadly that mobile devices and multi-screen experiences are where we?re headed. People aren?t just watching TV anymore; they using their other devices to help them consume traditional media. Once marketers start making multi-channels work together seamlessly, the entire game will change.

SG: As everyone knows, it?s impossible to predict anything on the Web. However, one of the biggest trends?I?foresee is the rise of social data being used for traditional media purposes. It?s incredible to think about?the amount of consumer data that Facebook has at its disposal, and once that can be used to inform other media decisions,?the advertising and marketing world will change dramatically.

Do you think responsive design is worth all of the hype?
MH: If it?s done right, yes. Anything done poorly is a poor experience. We?re all mobile now, so whether designing responsively or not, you have to think of mobile first. If you try to squish a desktop site onto a mobile screen, whether it?s designed responsively or not is irrelevant. People don?t have the time or energy to consume massive amounts of content on your site, no matter what device they?re looking at it on. When we redesigned our site, we started at 320 and worked our way up to a more robust desktop experience.

SG: Responsive design is an incredible new technology, but it really has to be executed correctly. That is to say, a mobile-first approach is essential for designing a website that will adapt to various devices. You cannot just create a desktop design and expect it to naturally ?collapse? into the mobile format. As we all know, mobile is king, and your responsive site must be developed entirely around that fact.

Exercise: Nature's Mood Enhancer | World of Psychology

Exercise: Nature's Mood EnhancerHow often have you wished for a happiness drug without health or legal consequences?

Good news: Nature has built the answer into the human body. Regular exercise acts as a mood booster and happens to be good for people.

You have probably heard about the euphoria athletes often feel after sustained exertion, and perhaps you have felt your mood lift after a workout or a brisk walk. However, the exercise high doesn?t depend on long workouts.

In fact, the best results come from doing a little each day.

The Chemistry of Exercise

Stress is a prevalent issue, but the stress response actually is beneficial during exercise. When you begin a workout, your heart rate rises and triggers the body?s fight-or-flight instinct. The brain releases a chemical called brain-derived neurotrophic factor to protect neurons from the anticipated effects of a prolonged battle. At the same time, the brain releases endorphins to numb pain and facilitate peak performance.

These chemicals also induce feelings of well-being. Endorphins can cause euphoria (known as the runner?s high). Brain-derived neurotrophic factor soothes ruffled neurons to promote a sense of clarity. This is why a problem can seem more manageable after a walk or run to clear your head. Your brain has literally returned to baseline to allow you to respond most effectively to environmental threats.

The useful thing about brain-derived neurotrophic factor and endorphins is that they are addictive, just like nicotine. When people crave cigarettes, they are expressing the desires of nicotinic receptors in the nervous system. The urge to smoke can feel overwhelming. Similarly, the body can become addicted to the sense of clarity and well-being that often follows exercise.

The Happiness Workout

If exercise truly is addictive, why isn?t everyone a triathlete? The answer may lie in the conditions under which exertion triggers happiness. As with many addictive behaviors, the greatest euphoria occurs when starting a workout regimen. This may partially explain the enthusiasm new gym members feel and why so many of them stop going after a few months. As the happiness effect tapers off, people are no longer biochemically rewarded for working out. It becomes another chore, and only the highly motivated continue.

Fortunately, an answer exists that doesn?t involve extraordinary willpower. Much public attention has focused on research findings that just 20 minutes of exercise per day can have substantial physical benefits.

Additional studies suggest that the same routine powers feelings of happiness as well. Just as a smoker reaches for that first morning cigarette, so the person hitting the gym daily can expect a mood boost. The brain becomes conditioned to the expectation of the regular release of endorphins and other mood-enhancing chemicals.

Daily workouts are the best way to maximize the happiness effect. Weekend warriors and people who exercise every other day are less likely to feel a mood boost. They are too frequently active to benefit from the beginners? high. At the same time, they don?t exercise regularly enough to form a biochemical habit.

For many people, an effective solution is to alter their expectations of what a workout should be. Rather than exercising strenuously when energy and schedule allow, aim for 20 or 30 minutes per day of moderate activity such as walking. If this seems like too much, start with 10 minutes. The point is to establish a daily exercise habit that trains the brain to respond with feelings of happiness.

Daily exercise becomes a self-reinforcing habit motivated by positive feelings. Once your brain associates workouts with happiness, you?ll wonder how you managed so long without those running shoes.

(AP) ? This week, Microsoft Corp. will release a new version of its Windows operating system, one designed to make desktop and laptop computers work more like tablets. It represents the software company's effort to address the growing popularity of smartphones and tablet computers, namely the iPad.

The new software is a radical departure from previous versions of Windows. The familiar start menu on the lower left corner is gone, and people will have to swipe the edges of the screen to access various settings. There will be a new screen filled with a colorful array of tiles, each leading to a different application, task or collection of files. Windows 8 is designed especially for touch screens, though it will work with the mouse and keyboard shortcuts, too.

There will be several versions of Windows 8:

? Windows 8.

Like its predecessors, Windows 8 will run on computers with processing chips made by Intel Corp. or Advanced Micro Devices Inc. There's a basic version designed for consumers and a Pro version for more tech-savvy users and businesses. The Pro version has such features as encryption and group account management. Large companies with volume-licensing deals with Microsoft will want Windows 8 Enterprise, which has additional tools for information-technology staff to manage machines.

? Windows RT.

For the first time, there will also be a version running on lower-energy chips common in phones and tablets. That version will run on tablets and some devices that marry tablet and PC features. While tablets with Windows 8 can run standard Windows programs, the RT devices will be restricted to applications specifically designed for the system. Borrowing from Apple's playbook, Microsoft is allowing RT to get applications only from its online store, and apps must meet content and other guidelines.

? Windows Phone 8.

While Windows 8 and RT will be out Friday, the phone version won't be available until an unspecified date this fall. Microsoft has an event on it Monday and may announce more details then. Nokia Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. already have announced plans for new Windows phones.

You can get Windows RT and Windows Phone 8 only by buying devices with the software already installed, while Windows 8 can be purchased as an upgrade as well.

Here's how you can get ? or avoid getting ? Windows 8:

? Buy a new PC:

Desktop, laptop and tablet computers with Windows 8 already installed will go on sale Friday. Several PC manufacturers including Samsung, Lenovo Group Ltd., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. already have announced details about their new machines, while retailers such as Best Buy Co. have trained staff to explain and demonstrate the new system. Microsoft will also have its Surface tablet with Windows RT out, with a Windows 8 version coming later.

? Upgrade your PC:

Those who have bought a Windows 7 PC (other than the Starter Edition) since June 2 will be able to buy Windows 8 Pro for $14.99. The offer applies to Windows 7 PCs sold until Jan. 31, and the upgrade must be claimed by Feb. 28.

To claim the offer, register the machine at https://windowsupgradeoffer.com . You'll get an email with a promo code, which you can use to get the Windows 8 upgrade online.

Those who bought a Windows PC before June 2 will be able to upgrade for $39.99. You must already have Windows XP with Service Pack 3, Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Those who prefer buying a DVD to upgrade will have to pay $69.99.

Before buying the upgrade, check to make sure your machine is strong enough to run Windows 8. Microsoft lists the system requirements here: http://windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-US/Home/ProgramInfo .

Not sure if you have what it takes? Microsoft has an upgrade tool that will stop you if you try to buy Windows 8 without the requirements. The tool will also warn you of software that might need updates to work on Windows 8. Go to http://Windows.com starting Friday to get started.

If you're upgrading from Windows 7, the tool will let you keep settings, personal files and applications. You can migrate settings and files from Vista and files only from XP. You'll also have the option to start fresh and bring nothing to Windows 8.

? Keep older Windows:

Do nothing if you do not wish to upgrade to Windows 8. After Windows 8 is out, most machines on sale will have that version of Windows.

It will be possible to buy Windows 7 machines or upgrade to Windows 7, though you may have order online and your choices may be restricted to gaming or business-oriented machines.

Microsoft hasn't said what the cutoff date for Windows 7 will be, but expect to be able to buy Windows 7 as an upgrade for another year or preinstalled on a new machine for two more years.

After Windows 7 came out in October 2009, for instance, retailers were still allowed to sell boxed versions of the predecessor, Vista, until October 2010. PC makers were able to sell Vista machines until October 2011.

Microsoft plans to continue providing technical support for Windows 7 until Jan. 14, 2020.

Putting a speed limit on cargo ships as they sail near ports and coastlines could cut their emission of air pollutants by up to 70 percent, reducing the impact of marine shipping on Earth's climate and human health, scientists have found. Their evaluation of the impact of vessel speed reduction policies, such as those proposed by the California Air Resources board, appears in ACS' journal Environmental Science & Technology.

David R. Cocker III and colleagues explain that marine shipping is the most efficient form of transporting goods, with more than 100,000 ships carrying 90 percent of the world's cargo. However, engines on these vessels burn low-grade oil that produce large amounts of air pollution. Because fuel consumption and smokestack emissions increase exponentially with speed, the authors explored how speed limits could reduce pollution.

They found that slowing container ships to about 14 miles per hour (mph) reduced emissions of carbon dioxide by about 60 percent and nitrogen oxides by 55 percent compared to emissions at traditional cruising speeds of 25-29 mph. Soot emissions fell by almost 70 percent. The authors suggest that imposing these speed limits on vessels near ports and coastlines could significantly reduce their pollution and protect the health of people living in those areas.

Apple nearing deal with labels for internet radio service, says Bloomberg

Apple nearing deal with labels for internet radio service, says Bloomberg

Rumors of a music streaming service from Apple have been circulating since the dawn of the iPod age. Bloomberg is reporting that an internet radio platform from Cupertino is nearing reality, as talks between Apple and the major music labels have "intensified." The negotiations center around how to share revenues from an ad-supported service that, according to reports, would pose more of a threat to sites like Pandora than it would Spotify. In fact, after Bloomberg reported that the new Apple service could launch during the first quarter of 2013, Pandora stocks plummeted over 17 percent and trading of the company was briefly halted. According to sources Cook and co. are seeking much more flexibility than its potential competitors enjoy and earlier access to new releases. The shift towards ad revenue and a new platform for helping listeners discover music is considered by most involved to be an essential evolution of the iTunes ecosystem as sales of digital downloads have slowed. Savile victims allege paedophile ring existed at BBC

LONDON (Reuters) - A sex scandal gripping BBC deepened on Wednesday with claims that a paedophile ring had existed involving some of its stars, as its former director general said his handling of the case shouldn't stop him becoming the boss of the New York Times.

The BBC has been thrown into disarray by accusations it helped cover up sexual abuse by one of its most celebrated former presenters, Jimmy Savile, and has struggled to explain why one of its own shows killed an investigation into it.

The broadcaster's current Director General George Entwistle has been condemned for his handling of one of the worst crises in the corporation's 90-year history and questions have also been raised about his predecessor Mark Thompson, who is set to take over at the New York Times Co next month.

The government warned the BBC on Wednesday that the scandal was raising "very real concerns" about public trust.

"These allegations do leave many institutions, perhaps particularly the BBC, with serious questions to answer," Prime Minister David Cameron told parliament.

Police and the BBC, which is funded by the public through an annual licence fee, are looking into allegations that the eccentric, cigar-chomping Savile, who died last year, abused young girls over six decades.

Some of the attacks were alleged to have taken place on BBC premises.

Lawyers representing some of the male and female victims, some of whom were as young as eight when the abuse occurred, said their clients had indicated an organised paedophile ring involving other celebrities had existed at the BBC during the height of Savile's fame in the 1970s and 80s.

"There is information of a possible paedophile ring and we have people who have approached us with that information," Alicia Alinia, one of the lead lawyers involved in the cases for the Slater and Gordon law firm told Reuters.

"It seems to be a number of people who were involved other than Jimmy Savile, I can't reveal any specific names of celebrities involved, but it seems as though it wasn't just limited to unknowns."

Earlier, the BBC said new allegations had been made against nine current BBC staff or contributors since revelations about Savile were first broadcast by rival channel ITV.

These ranged from inappropriate language or behaviour to harassment and serious claims of sexual assault.

"Where appropriate action needs to be taken and people would need to be suspended, that will happen," a BBC spokeswoman said.

In a sign the scandal could spread further, lawmaker Tom Watson told parliament a senior aide to an unnamed former prime minister might have been involved in a suspected paedophile ring.

"I want to ensure that the Metropolitan Police secure the evidence, re-examine it, and investigate clear intelligence suggesting a powerful paedophile network linked to parliament and Number 10 (prime minister's office)," he said.

"REAL CONCERNS"

The developments come at a time when politicians are increasingly voicing disquiet about the BBC's broader management structure.

Culture Secretary Maria Miller wrote to the broadcaster's independent governing body to say "very real concerns are being raised about public trust and confidence in the BBC".

Lawmakers and the media heavily criticised Entwistle for his unconvincing appearance before parliament on Tuesday to answer questions over the scandal.

Thompson, his predecessor, is also facing scrutiny over his handling of the case. The public editor of the New York Times openly questioned whether the Briton was now fit to serve in his new role with such a scandal hanging over him.

"I do not believe there is anything that I've done in relation to this matter which should in anyway impinge on my abilities to fully discharge the responsibilities I'll have at the New York Times," Thompson told Reuters.

He said he was not briefed on the high-profile investigative programme that was looking into allegations against Savile, who hosted prime-time children's shows on the BBC, and that he was not involved in the decision to kill its report.

Entwistle, who replaced him as BBC director general in September, told hostile lawmakers on Tuesday that failures at the corporation had allowed Savile to prey on young girls, but he too denied he had helped suppress the report.

Damian Collins, a lawmaker from the ruling Conservative Party and a member of the parliamentary committee which questioned Entwistle, said it still wanted answers.

"I don't think the director general gave a very convincing performance yesterday and I think there were a lot of questions about the decisions he's taken," he told Reuters.

In reference to Thompson, who was director general when the decision was taken to drop the investigative Newsnight programme into the subject, he said:

"I find it extraordinary that the decision to close down the Jimmy Savile investigation could have been taken without the knowledge of the director general, who is the editor-in-chief, because this was not any run-of-the-mill investigation.

"It was one of the highest importance, involving some very grave criminal allegations about someone who had been a BBC employee for decades."

Reading is not just looking at words and saying them aloud in our minds, it?s letting those words take us away to visit new destinations, learn about new things, engage our imaginations. And for many of us, a good book becomes like a friend?all we have to do is pick it up, start turning pages, and we feel comfortable, interested, and sometimes, even loved.

Many studies have proven the positive correlation between a child's development and family reading time. But the bottom line is that when we read together with our kids, it creates a connection and a common interest. When children are younger it creates a sense of safety, nurturing, and love. ?It also helps establish routines, particularly in the evening before bedtime, because if we read to our kids consistently at that time, it helps transition them from a busy, hectic day to a relaxed and cozy state of mind (perfect for sleeping).

Keep books tucked away in your car, in your travel bag, or in the kids? backpacks when you?re on the go. ?Books can be a wonderful way to spend time when you?re waiting for a doctor?s appointment, are stuck in traffic, or even when visiting with grandparents.?

And don?t forget the library. ?Your community library can become a family?s richest treasure! ?Make it a regular part of your weekly schedule to attend story time or just go to find a brand new series that the family can enjoy together, as well as individual reads that will excite your child and keep him coming back for new experiences throughout his lifetime.

No matter what type of book tickles your fancy, sit down with your kids and get reading.
