Twitter CEO Commits NCAA Violation by Using Twitter

In 1985, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in?computer and communication sciences. Since his micro blogging site really took off, Costolo has been used by the university to hopefully convince high school talents to commit to the Wolverines. The NCAA is cool with that, but what they aren't OK with is Costolo actually contacting the recruits in any way, shape or form. And yes, Twitter is included, which makes this message a possible violation.?

Even if Costolo does something as seemingly harmless as welcoming?2014 quarterback recruit Wilton Speight and 2015 recruit?George Campbell to the Wolverines, it's still a no-no. Call it crazy, silly, whatever, it's a rule. Luckily, Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf informed For The Win?that the??potential minor violation" will be handled "as appropriate." Key word: minor. So, there shouldn't be much of a penalty coming down the pipeline. ?

If the CEO of Twitter is making mistakes on social media, none of us are safe. ?

Bobby Brown signs with Dongguan with an NBA clause

QUOTE ( balldontlie @ 31.07.2013, 08:18 )

AP Source: Pistons acquire PG Jennings from Bucks

(AP) ? A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that the Detroit Pistons have acquired point guard Brandon Jennings from the Milwaukee Bucks for point guard Brandon Knight and two prospects.

The person, who spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the trade hasn't been announced, says Jennings has agreed to a $24 million, three-year contract with the Pistons. The person says Detroit will also give up seldom-used center Viacheslav Kravtsov and forward Khris Middleton in the trade.

Detroit has been active this offseason ? signing free agents Josh Smith, Chauncey Billups and Luigi Datome ? as it desperately tries to end its four-year postseason drought.

The Pistons signed Billups to mentor Knight, but have chosen to replace him with Jennings.

Porsche 911 parade at Silverstone Classic hits record breaking 1,208

Photo Porsche 911s Silverstone Parade

1,208 Porsche 911s hit the Silverstone track to celebrate Porsche-s 50th anniversary

Last month, we reported that plans by Silverstone Classic to run a record-breaking parade of Porshe 911s to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Porsche had garnered so many applications that Silverstone has to stop accepting applications nearly two months ahead of the event.

Now the 2013 Silverstone Classic 911 Parade has happened it seems Silverstone decided to go for broke, and instead of the originally planned parade of 911 911s, they actually managed to drive 1,208 911s round the Silverstone track at the same time ? a new record.

As well as 1208 911s, Porsche and the organisers of the Silverstone Classic managed to entice a number of names along too, including Mark Porsche ? great grandson of Porsche founder, Ferdinand Porsche ? former F1 and Le Mans driver Derek Bell and Le Mans drivers John Fitzpatrick and Richard Attwood.

But the celebration wasn?t really rooted round famous names ? the 911 was the star of the show and the owners and drivers who turned up to take their pride and joy round Silverstone was what made the event special.

The parade included many of the most famous 911s, including the Carrera, RS, RSR, GT, Speedster and Targa variants, and a great time seems to have been had by one and all.

Mark Porsche said:

Of course, the 911 means a great deal to me as it?s my father?s big design and it will always have a special place in my heart.

It?s been a family member over all the generations of the 911 series and I?m very proud to be here today to represent the Porsche family at this great event.

I think that to have these 1,200 cars on track is the attention that the 911 deserves for its 50th?birthday. I can?t thank the Porsche Club GB enough for making this event possible.

As well as providing a stunning Porsche spectacle at Silverstone, the record-breaking 911 parade also raised funds for the ?Hope for Tomorrow? cancer charity.

UK ombudsman: PPI insurance complaints may have peaked

By Matt Scuffham

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Financial Ombudsman Service is starting to see a decline in the number of complaints it receives about mis-sold loan insurance but levels remain very high, Chief Financial Ombudsman Natalie Ceeney said.

Britain's biggest banks are expected to this week set aside hundreds of millions of pounds more to compensate customers mis-sold the insurance but Ceeney's comments will raise their hopes that the worst is behind them.

The industry has already set aside more than 14 billion pounds to compensate customers mis-sold payment protection policies (PPI), which were meant to protect borrowers in the event of sickness or unemployment but were often sold to those who would have been ineligible to claim.

Ceeney said the ombudsman, which steps in where customers and their banks can't reach an agreement, is now receiving 2,000 new cases every working day compared with 3,000 at its peak six months ago.

"I think somewhat inevitably the people who care most about complaining and trying to get compensation do so first. In any complaints cycle the numbers rise and you subsequently see them fall. I suspect we're on the downward curve," Ceeney told Reuters in an interview on Monday.

Ceeney cautioned it was difficult to predict future trends.

"Will it fall to 1,000 in six months? I just don't know. The interesting thing about PPI is none of us know where it's going to go," she said.

Despite the ombudsman working with banks to improve their complaints handling procedures, Ceeney said 78 percent of cases were being resolved in the customer's favour.

"We should be seeing uphold rates at 20 to 25 percent because banks should know what they're doing now. These are now so well trodden. When customers do complain it should be handled properly," she said.

Barclays is expected to add to the 2.6 billion pounds it has set aside for PPI costs, when it becomes the first UK bank to report results on Tuesday. Lloyds, which has set aside 6.8 billon pounds already, the most of any bank, is also expected to increase its provision on Thursday.

Lloyds ended a contract with Deloitte in June after problems were uncovered in the way a call centre operated by the business services firm handled customer complaints about PPI.

"Too many of the banks have not taken enough care on PPI complaint handling. Most of the big banks have outsourced it. The problem if you outsource is that you have to pay huge amounts of care to make sure your outsourcers are working to the right standards," Ceeney said.

According to figures from Britain's financial regulator, 50 million PPI policies were sold and only around 15 percent of people who had the policies have claimed for compensation.

Ceeney also said the ombudsman had seen a sharp rise in complaints about payday lenders although the numbers remained relatively low, which she blamed in part on the stigma felt by those who had used payday lenders.

One Of Apple's Top Vice Presidents, Bob Mansfield, Is No Longer On The Executive Team (AAPL)

Apple

?

Bob Mansfield, one of Apple's senior vice presidents, is no longer part of Apple's executive team, Apple said in a statement to AllThingsD and other outlets.

Apple says Mansfield will still continue to work at the company on "special projects."

Several Apple blogs picked up on the move last night when Mansfield disappeared from the company's executive bios page.

Mansfield attempted to retire from Apple last year, but was brought back a few months later to work as the senior vice president of technologies, where he focused on hardware. He's not scheduled to leave the company until at least the end of 2014.

Apple hasn't elaborated on Mansfield's new role, so it's tough to tell what's going on. It's possible this exit from the exec team is in preparation for his retirement next year. In the meantime, Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac has reported Mansfield is on the team making the rumored iWatch, a wrist computer that will supposedly be packed with body sensors and connect to your iPhone.

RAW VIDEO: Johnny 'Football' Manziel gets booted from UT frat party

SAN ANTONIO -- Johnny 'Football' Manziel has made national news once again -- this time for getting kicked out of University of Texas frat party.

On Friday night, the Heisman-winning quarterback stopped by a UT frat party. Within minutes, Manziel was asked to leave -- cell-phone video shows people chucking beer and insults at the star player as he was escorted out of the party.

-------> Click here to see the video on bleacherreport.com

Manziel was allegedly chastised for wearing a pink polo and drinking light beer.

One tweet read, "A keystone light?! C'mon! You're Johnmy Freaking Football! Step up your game."

On Saturday, Manziel attended another UT frat party -- this time with the brothers of Phi Gamma Delta. He was not asked to leave.

Manziel has received mixed emotions in Texas, particularly in Austin. It is widely rumored that Manziel wanted to go to the University of Texas, but was never offered a scholarship.

In February of 2013, Manziel received major criticism after a photo of him flashing UT?s 'hook 'em horns? hand sign surfaced on Twitter.

More controversy ignited when a picture on www.bustedcoverage.com was posted, showing the quarterback sporting a longhorn tattoo on his abdomen. Manziel later tweeted that the tattoo was fake.

Then, less than two weeks ago, Manziel was sent home from the Manning Football Camp after he slept through mandatory meetings.

After winning the Heisman trophy as a freshman at Texas A&M, Manziel has become something of a celebrity -- partying with musical superstars like Drake and 2 Chainz, and finding it increasingly difficult to stay out of the limelight.

'Johnny Football's' off-season headlines have nearly overshadowed the ones he's made on the field -- at least for now. Meanwhile, Texas A&M and UT fans alike will have to wait and see what the 2013 season holds in store.

Saturday Diary / Small worlds: getting a haircut, watching some football

While visiting Dallas recently on our annual trip to see most of our relatives, I had to get a haircut. There had been no time for one before we left, and my only niece was getting married while we there. I was going to be an usher in that wedding, so I wanted to look good. That's not easy for me, but a haircut likely would help.

I randomly chose a place not far from my mother's apartment. There were several others just as close, but I made my choice and, at about 3:15 on a Monday afternoon, I walked in. The woman running the place said there would be a short wait. As I started to turn around to find an empty chair, another woman tapped me on the shoulder from behind and asked if I were David Fink. I wasn't going to lie about it, so I said "yes." I recognized her instantly as a daughter of my best friend and colleague nearly 40 years ago when I worked for a long-gone newspaper in Dallas.

He died last fall, and I had sent condolences, but I had not talked to or seen either of his daughters in a long time. But there was one of them with one of her twins in tow. They were doing some errands, the boy needed a haircut and, at exactly the same time as I arrived at a randomly selected barber shop roughly 1,200 miles from home, so did they. Small world, indeed.

But it gets better and smaller ...

?

Everett Cook arrived at the Post-Gazette in early June and is spending most of his summer in our sports department, where I edit many of his stories. He attends the University of Michigan and is one of many interns who have washed ashore here in the past two months. It's an annual rite of summer, and I do not mind it. In fact, many of them invigorate the newsroom, and some reinforce the notion that the future of our business will be in good hands. I am no authority on the subject, but I supervised the intern program here for more than 20 years.

Incidentally, by my unsolicited reckoning, Mr. Cook has a fine future in our business.

But, as things turned out, I knew of Mr. Cook before he arrived, sort of. If you are befuddled, consider how I felt when I figured it out.

Everett Cook is big. Stands about 6 foot 4 and likely weighs 245 pounds or so. Not the kind of young man who is easily forgotten. In most cases, he makes a big first impression, pun intended.

Our paths, however, first crossed in December 2009 on a chilly Friday night that followed a chilly and wet day in San Jose, Calif., and, of course, I was unaware of it. And so was he.

I was visiting my son, who, at the time, worked for the National Hockey League team there, the Sharks. I visited him at least once a year, and we always had wanted to see a high school football game out there to compare the feel of the game, the crowds, the players' talent, etc,, to high school football here in Western Pennsylvania. Some of his friends highly recommended a playoff game between Bellarmine Prep and St. Francis that was destined to draw a standing-room-only crowd of at least 11,000. So, off we went.

We knew little about either team but were funneled to a standing-room section behind a railing adjacent to the Bellarmine side. So, we adopted Bellarmine as our team. Go Bells! In a bizarre touch, the football-savvy and friendly man next to us turned out to be a North Allegheny High School graduate with many remaining links to the Pittsburgh area. But I digress.

The caliber of players and play was high, the game thrilling. The Bells rallied late for a win, then preserved it even later with an interception near their end zone. We have remained fans of the Bells, and each week of the high school football season I check the Internet for Bellarmine scores. The Bells rarely disappoint me.

?

About a week ago, a colleague casually mentioned that Everett Cook was from California. He was not sure where in California, but he thought it might be San Jose. Since I had been there a few times and my son had worked there, that intrigued me and some bells went off. But Mr. Cook was out of town on assignment, so I turned to my crack research team (uh ... that's me) and did some fast investigation.

Less than 24 hours later, I confirmed, with Mr. Cook's kind assistance, that he was from San Jose and, yes, No. 76 on our program that night nearly four years ago was -- injured shoulder and all -- starting nose tackle Everett Cook, listed then at 6-4, 265. He could not believe the chain of events that stretched from San Jose to Ann Arbor, Mich., to the corner of Commonwealth and the Boulevard of the Allies any more than I could.

Talk about it being a small world ...

Japan's PM may rethink tax hike; could shake markets, unsettle support

TOKYO | Sun Jul 28, 2013 4:16am EDT

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's most significant fiscal reform in years - a planned increase in the country's sales tax - could be delayed or watered down in a move that might rattle financial markets and amount to an own goal for the prime minister.

Despite holding the strongest political mandate of any prime minister in years, there are signs Shinzo Abe is seriously rethinking the plan out of concern it could derail a nascent economic recovery he has crafted with an aggressive policy mix, dubbed Abenomics.

Abe says he will decide in the autumn whether to proceed with the first part of the two-stage plan after gauging the state of the economic recovery, especially GDP data that is due on Sept 9. The tax, similar to general sales tax and value added tax in other countries, is due to rise to 8 percent in April 2014 and then 10 percent in 2015.

Abe does not want to raise the tax, given the likely economic and political repercussions, but he understands the risks of upsetting the markets by giving the appearance of backtracking on promised reform, said a person involved in crafting economic policies. At 5 percent, Japan and Canada have the lowest equivalent consumption taxes in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, OECD data shows.

The stakes in Japan are high. The tax hike was passed into law last year with the support of Abe's current coalition parties and the previous government and is meant to be the first step toward repairing Japan's tattered finances. However, the law also requires the government to judge the economic conditions before giving the final go ahead.

Reneging on fiscal reform could hit investor confidence, which has allowed Tokyo to borrow money cheaply even though its $5 trillion public debt, well over twice the nation's annual economic output, is the heaviest burden in the industrial world.

At the same time, Abe has stressed that his top priority is to rouse Japan from 15 years of deflation and tepid growth through his Abenomics program of heavy government spending, massive monetary easing and promises of a longer-term growth strategy.

Abe himself admitted the thorny dilemma just hours after scoring a landslide win in upper house elections on July 21 that gave his ruling bloc a clear parliamentary majority.

"It will be a difficult decision," he said of the looming tax choice.

"The economy is just starting to recover and now is the best chance for Japan to emerge from deflation," Abe said. "I don't want to lose this chance. At the same time, markets are watching (our progress) on Japan's fiscal reform."

SPLIT

Despite his electoral triumph, Abe's team is split.

A small number of vocal reflationists, such as cabinet office adviser Koichi Hamada, say Abe should prioritize recovery and go-slow on raising the tax. Pitted against them, the Finance Ministry says it is vital for Japan to show markets and trading partners that it is serious about putting its fiscal house in order.

Japanese media reported on Saturday that Abe had instructed his government to study the impact on the economy and prices of four tax-hike options, including sticking with the existing plan, raising the rate 1 percentage point a year for five years and delaying the hike entirely.

Abe, speaking at a news conference on a visit to Manila, said: "I haven't yet issued any instructions to come up with several proposals."

Government officials also say they haven't received any formal orders to draw up fresh scenarios, although an advisory panel to the premier had already been mandated to study the impact of the current plan on the economy and prices.

Public opinion may play to the advantage of the reflationists.

A survey of 902 people in the Nikkei business daily, conducted just after the election, found only 11 percent supporting the existing plan, compared with 58 percent who favor "flexibility" in the timing or scale of the increase and 27 percent who oppose raising the tax at all.

History too provides a cautionary tale for Abe, who got a rare second chance at running the government in December.

Noboru Takeshita, the premier who forced the first sales tax through parliament in 1988, and Ryutaro Hashimoto, who raised it to 5 percent from 3 percent in 1997, were driven from office as their public support collapsed - although other problems also plagued both men. The decision to double the tax contributed to the defeat of Abe's predecessor, Yoshihiko Noda.

Adviser Hamada, a 77-year-old emeritus professor at Yale University and a key member of Abe's brain trust, told Reuters on July 23 that Japan needed much more evidence of a sturdy recovery before raising the tax.

The economy, which grew at an annualized rate of 4.1 percent in the first quarter - the fastest among Group of Seven industrial powers - needs to maintain similar growth for two more quarters before enduring a tax hike, Hamada said.

BOND TRADERS WATCHING

He set the bar higher still, saying he is pushing Abe to wait not only until growth picks up but until employment improves, ensuring a firmer footing for the recovery.

The government should wait until unemployment falls to 3 percent from around 4 percent now and job seekers outnumber job offers "in all regions" of the country, Hamada said.

Although the latest data shows there were 90 seekers for each 100 job offers in May nationally, only four of Japan's 10 regions have more labor demand than supply.

It is unclear how much influence Hamada has on fiscal policy, but the views of the reflationists might "have significant influence on Abe's thinking on this subject," said former Bank of Japan deputy governor Kazumasa Iwata, head of the prominent think tank, the Japan Centre for Economic Research.

Some government officials are keen to start fiscal reform, privately worried that changing the tax plan would endanger Japan's promise to halve its budget deficit - excluding debt-financing - from fiscal 2010 levels by fiscal 2015 and balance the budget five years later.

They say raising the tax in incremental steps each year could be too easily derailed, since the politically sensitive hikes would have to be approved for five years in a row - with national elections scheduled in three years.

Finance Minister Taro Aso has strongly insisted on sticking with the tax-hike plan, saying it is an international promise. Still, Aso signaled last week he is willing to soften the economic blow by offering another dollop of fiscal stimulus.

The Japanese government-bond market, which lets Abe's government borrow 10-year money for less than 0.8 percent, would be hit hard if Abe changes the sales-tax plan, said Tadashi Matsukawa, head of Japan fixed income at PineBridge Investments.

"The whole of Abenomics would basically crash under that scenario," he said, adding he thinks it unlikely Abe will change the plan.

Iwata, the former BOJ deputy governor, told Reuters that if Abe postponed the agreed tax hike, that would endanger the rest of the fiscal-reform schedule.

"If Japan can't raise the tax rate even when the economy is in good shape, that may lead to market distrust over Abe's governance," Iwata said.

NBA Stars Tee Off at Lido Charity Golf Outing

Turf wasn?t the only green raised when former NBA stars, New York lawmakers and hundreds of other golfers teed off at Lido Golf Course for a charity outing to support cancer research.

The Pat Cairo Family Foundation had sunk more than $3 million into the cause leading up to its 17th annual golf outing Tuesday to raise funds for terminally ill cancer patients and women?s cancer research.

?We?ve all been affected by someone who has had cancer,? Walt ?Clyde? Frazier, who led the New York Knicks to their only two NBA Championships in the 1970s, told the crowd.

The outing drew approximately 275 golfers and 100 volunteers. It was followed by a dinner at the nearby Sands Beach Club, where about 175 additional guests were in attendance.

Joseph Cairo, the Nassau OTB chairman who in 1995 founded of the charity in the name of his wife after she lost her battle with cancer, said that the outing was a ?great turnout for a great cause? and ?just a part of what we do.?

Beneficiaries include Calvary Hospital, an acute care specialty hospital in the Bronx where Pat Cairo was treated during the three months before her passing, and Dr. Carolyn Runowicz, a former president of the American Cancer Society who was her oncologist at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Cancer Hospital.

?What?s important with this foundation is that people know exactly where money is going,? said New York State Sen. Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre), the senate?s co-leader, who participated in the outing.

He added that the foundation?s contributions aided Runowicz and her team in the development of an FDA-approved HPV vaccine that protects women from cervical cancer, which Pat Cairo suffered from.

The foundation is also credited with ensuring passage of 1999 End of Life Care Law, which enforces respectful treatment of terminally ill cancer patients.

Also in attendance were former Knicks stars Earl ?The Pearl? Monroe and John Starks as well as Nate ?Tiny? Archibald, who played for the Boston Celtics.

Frazier touted the benefits if healthy living to prevent cancer.

?Whenever you have a problem, the doctor will say ?a little more exercise, watch what you eat,?? said Frazier. ?It plays a big part.?

Andrew Hudson now has a scar that stretches half-way across his forehead from his left ear to his inner left eyebrow.

A Florida teen has recalled the heart-stopping moment his head was bitten by a 9- to 10-foot-long alligator while swimming in a Geneva river.

Andrew Hudson, 17, was floating down the Econ River in the Little Big Econ State Forest with a friend Monday when he was suddenly struck from behind.

"It just felt like a big thud, and it started hurting and bleeding everywhere, and I felt the gator on my body," he told Bay News 9 of the bite that left him with a scar across the left side of his forehead.

"I took off swimming as fast as I could to get away from it and blood was everywhere, so I took off my shorts and wrapped them around my head, and basically waited," he said.

Monday's gator bite is the second to make national headlines in days with a kayaker in the Everglades also attacked on June 29.

That woman's inflatable kayak was chomped on, deflating her in the gator-infested water. She managed to get to shore and call for help on her cell phone, leading to her safe rescue.

Authorities warn of alligators protecting their young with the season being right for babies.

In the Everglades case, the woman was said to be paddling in a restricted area where a mother alligator was known to hang out with her young.

New Treaty Boosts Text Access for Blind People

An international treaty approved on 27?June is a major victory for people with visual impairments. The 186 member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization came to a historic agreement to remove copyright obstacles that have hampered the global availability of textbooks and other published works in accessible formats such as braille, large print and audio.

The agreement, which has been a decade in the making, was reached in Marrakesh, Morocco, after more than a week of intense negotiations. All ratifying states must now introduce national copyright exemptions that will allow government agencies and non-profit bodies to convert published works to accessible versions and distribute them globally to visually impaired people.

The agreement also means that organizations for the blind will be able to freely share their collections of accessibly formatted works across borders, in particular with developing nations. Only around one-third of the world?s countries, mostly the richest, have such copyright exceptions in place. Yet 90% of the world?s 285?million visually impaired people live in developing countries, according to the World Health Organization. The treaty will help visually impaired individuals worldwide to have ?access to and full participation in science education and research?, says Richard Weibl, director of the Project on Science, Technology, and Disability at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington DC.

But organizations for blind people have the resources to convert only a fraction of the books and other materials published each year. So they are also pushing for publishers to format their mainstream products to be fully accessible to the blind from the outset and for suppliers of devices such as e-readers, tablets and smartphones to ensure that such content is usable.

?We have not yet seen the adoption of accessible formats and standards on the scale that we would like to see, particularly in the area of scientific and mathematical texts,? says Chris Danielsen, a spokesman for the US National Federation of the Blind in Baltimore, Maryland.

A big step towards that goal came in March, when the International Publishers Association endorsed EPUB?3 ? sweeping international standards for publishing multimedia-rich, interactive digital content on all devices.

EPUB?3 incorporates the Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) Consortium standards that many organizations for blind people use to convert books and other published content to accessible formats. The DAISY standards are a set of specifications for formatting digital documents that allow for unrivalled speech-based access to texts. They permit blind people to easily navigate chunky textbooks, for example, to add audio notes, and to create and find bookmarks. The DAISY standards also make figures, graphics and equations machine-readable and thus accessible to the blind through a range of software and devices, including refreshable braille, embossing printers and tactile tablets.

?I?m very excited about EPUB?3,? says Mark Doyle, director of journal information systems at the American Physical Society (APS) in New York. The APS is one of the few publishers to have experimented with using DAISY standards so far. Adding DAISY functionality to the society?s papers would have been too cumbersome and costly, he says. But in the coming years it will be much easier to include it now that the APS is shifting its publishing workflow towards using EPUB?3 across the board.

However, whether publishers will take full advantage of the opportunities offered by EPUB?3 to make graphics and equations accessible remains a concern, says John Gardner, a solid-state physicist and founder of ViewPlus Technologies in Corvallis, Oregon. Gardner lost his sight at the age of 48 and has since dedicated his talents?to developing assistive software and devices to make scientific content more accessible to the blind.

Golf: McDowell wins French Open in style as Sterne collapses

VERSAILLES, France: Graeme McDowell produced a final round four-under-par 67 to lead home the field by four strokes and become the first Northern Irishman to win the French Open on a thrilling final day at Le Golf National on Sunday.

The 2010 US Open winner finished the tournament with a nine-under-par total of 275 as an initially tense final round eventually became a one man show with McDowell cantering home to pick up a winner's cheque of 500,000 euros.

His closest rival, Richard Sterne of South Africa, held the lead after nine holes before collapsing down the stretch and finishing with three bogeys in six holes while McDowell's rock solid game of just four bogeys throughout the tournament was the cornerstone of his second win of the year.

Sterne settled for second on five-under-par 279.

Englishman Graeme Storm and Spaniard Eduardo De La Riva were paired together for the final round and both men fired two-under-par 69s to claim a share of third spot on four under.

"I've always felt that this golf course is one I can get around well. And coming into this week has been a bit strange for me, too many missed cuts and a little bit inconsistent," said McDowell.

"I felt my confidence coming back and hit the ball beautifully Thursday, Friday, Saturday. And today I was very realistic about my chances.

"Myself and Richard (Sterne) kind of dragged each other along there. He played really, really well and I knew it wasn't going to be an easy day.

"The way he was playing kind of inspired me to play better and it was a really good battle with him.

"The turning point was probably 15 and 16. Fifteen was an average putt that I thought missed and it went in and sixteen I still don't know how it went in. It was a right to left putt but I think the crowd sucked it in.

"I'm a very proud French Open winner."

Sterne led by one shot after nine see-saw holes before McDowell birdied the 10th to draw level and looked on as the South African drove his tee shot on 11 into the deep rough.

With no clear sight of the green, Sterne did well to get within 40 feet of the pin before getting down in two for his first bogey of the afternoon, putting McDowell back in the driving seat on eight under.

The 31-year-old from Pretoria looked certain to lose more ground at 13 when he sliced his second shot into the water but a fine approach shot and a 25 footer to save par kept him one back.

McDowell, who was looking for his sixth win in eight stroke play tournaments when leading after three rounds, and Sterne then headed towards what most players have described as the toughest four finishing holes on the European Tour.

Both players parred 15 before the treacherous par three 16th produced another swing in fortune for McDowell.

His tee shot missed the green before a lucky bounce left his ball in a position from where he was able to two putt for par.

Sterne, meanwhile, showed the pressure was taking it's toll when he missed a 10 foot putt for par and his second bogey in five holes handed McDowell a two-shot lead with two holes to play. He never looked back.

McDowell's win follows his triumph earlier this year at the Volvo World Match Play Championship and puts him in second place in The Race to Dubai on 1,530,715 euros, just 27,185 behind US Open champion Justin Rose.

DefaultShould I get a Samsung Galaxy Pocket?
I live in Argentina. I can get an unlocked Samsung Galaxy Pocket for less than $100usd. Then the unlimited data plans are ~$35usd/month.

The reason why I thought to get it is because I'm starting a new job where I have to be available to answer the phone during a certain range of time 3-4 hours during the day. If I can get my Skype account on my phone, I can answer work calls on-the-go.

Is this a good idea? I heard there is no "3G" here, only EDGE and GRSP or something like that. I don't know exactly what that means.

What if the service is bad, or Skype doesn't work well over the network? This is a big concern. Would love your thoughts and feedback. Also, what is great about the phone? I've always had MAC products but never a smart phone, I actually bought an iPhone just to sell it; I would never use a $750 phone!!!

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Sony's Crackle arrives on BlackBerry 10, reminds us to not watch Bad Boys II

Slowly, but steadily, BlackBerry's building its BB10 app catalog with some major gets. Today, that burgeoning list grows by a very important one with the addition of Sony's Crackle. The free, ad-based streaming video service, which culls together content from Sony's various TV and film studios, is available to download now from BlackBerry World. It's also compatible with the Q10's teeny, 3.1-inch screen, so if you hate your good eyesight, you can devote an hour or two to reliving the opus that is Bad Boys II. Sure, popular apps like Instagram, Hulu Plus and Netflix have yet to make their way over to BB10, but you can't fault the Waterloo-based outfit for getting users what it can. Even if that means bringing them Bad Boys II.

Pakistan utility company fights to power chaotic port megacity

By Katharine Houreld

KARACHI (Reuters) - Since Pakistan's biggest electricity company was privatized, its headquarters have been looted, its employees kidnapped and the government tried to arrest its boss.

It's been a roaring success.

Power cuts lasting 12 hours a day or more have devastated Pakistan's economy. The loss of millions of jobs has fuelled unrest in a nuclear-armed nation already beset by a Taliban insurgency.

The only city bucking the trend is the violent megacity of Karachi, Pakistan's financial heart - thanks to Tabish Gauhar and his team at the Karachi Electricity Supply Company (KESC).

"It has consumed every ounce of my energy," 42-year-old Gauhar told Reuters in his wood-paneled office. "But we have helped millions of people."

The new government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif won an election in May partly because it promised to fix the power cuts. Now many are wondering if KESC's successful privatization will be repeated elsewhere.

The government is due to release its energy strategy this week. One official said it was going to look closely at privatizing more state-run power companies.

POWER STRUGGLE

Pakistan's power companies share similar woes. Staff are often corrupt and influential families won't pay bills. The government sells power below the cost of production but pays subsidies late or not at all. Plants cannot afford fuel.

At the state-run Peshawar Electricity Supply Company, the majority of staff are illiterate, most new hires are relatives of existing staff and 37 percent of power generated was stolen, a 2011 USAID-funded audit found.

KESC had all the same problems when Dubai-based private equity firm Abraaj Capital bought a controlling stake in 2008. Gauhar and his Abraaj team decided to slash the workforce by a third, cut off non-payers and destroy illegal connections.

It started a war.

Redundant employees offered to work for free because they made such fat kickbacks. When management refused, thousands of protesters ransacked KESC's headquarters. They camped outside for months.

Gunmen attacked Gauhar's house. Workers crossed picket lines every day on the floor of police cars and more than 200 KESC employees were injured.

"We felt very lonely then," said Gauhar, who moved from CEO to chairman of KESC earlier this year. "When I used to visit one of our injured employees in the hospital it was hard for me to look them in the eye."

Many in the populist pro-labor government vilified KESC. Later, legislators tried to arrest Gauhar for not attending sub-committee meetings in the capital.

COLLECTING CASH

After the protests dissipated, KESC's next problem was making customers pay. More than a third of KESC's electricity was stolen in 2009. Those who got bills often ignored them.

One wealthy patriarch said he couldn't possibly start paying because his colleagues would think he had no influence left.

KESC started cutting off non-payers. When a transformer burned out in an area with high theft, KESC asked for two months' payment from the area's residents before replacing it.

KESC divided up the city of 18 million. Areas where 80 percent of people pay bills now have no regular power cuts. Areas with high loss -- often crime-ridden, sweltering slums -- have long power cuts. KESC is widely hated there.

Driver Muhammed Fayyaz says his neighborhood often has up to 10 hours of cuts per day. Summer temperatures top 40 degrees Celsius and protests are frequent.

"People block the main road and throw stones at passing vehicles," he said.

Fayyaz lives in a high-theft area. Stealing power is easy. Makeshift wires with metal hooks festoon KESC's lines in the sun-baked streets. Some lead to roadside businesses. Others head into the distance atop lines of makeshift bamboo poles.

"We clean them up but in five minutes they are back again," said KESC manager Muhammad Siddiq.

Mafias control the illegal lines. KESC staff who remove them are often attacked. Ten were taken hostage in a single incident last month. A mob attacked Siddiq's office hours after he spoke to Reuters.

Some slums are held by the Taliban or gangs, and KESC staff can't even enter. They are experimenting with licensing powerful local businessmen to collect bills and cut off non-payers.

BRIGHTER FUTURE?

But the painful reforms have begun paying dividends. Last year the company made its first profit in 17 years. Theft has fallen by 9 percent in four years. Half the city, including two industrial zones, does not have daily power cuts.

"It has made a big difference to my business," said tycoon S.M. Muneer, whose leather and textile factories employ thousands. "I cannot run a textile factory on a battery from my car."

Not everyone is happy. Gas shortages and maintenance problems still cause long power cuts. Customers who do pay bills suffer if their neighbors don't. Many poor can't afford the bills.

To improve customer relations, KESC gives free power to hundreds of charity schools and uninterrupted or subsidized power to 18 big public hospitals. KESC also built new call centers, connections and power plants.

The gleaming Chinese-built gas plant at the city's Bin Qasim port can generate 560 MW. But Pakistan rarely has enough gas for the plant to work at full capacity.

KESC blames that on national gas shortages, but the Sui Southern Gas Company, which is 70 percent government-owned, says that KESC owes it $500 million. KESC disputes the figure is that high and says it is offsetting the payment against outstanding bills from government entities that total $720 million.

"We've still got problems," said Syed Nayyer Hussain, KESC's new CEO. "But at least we've started."
