Ban Ireland's Brutal Blood-Sports - ForceChange

By Leo Robertson

Target: Irish Parliament Committee on Communications, Natural Resources, and Agriculture

Goal: Enact a ban on Ireland?s three most brutal legal blood-sports

Fox-hunting has long been popular in Ireland, a practice in which foxes are tracked and chased by hounds until they can no longer escape and are mauled to death by dogs. It is completely legal, despite being an obvious form of animal cruelty. This is the first of the country?s ?blood-sports,? leading into one of the other most brutal forms of recreation when foxes escape by hiding underground: fox dig-outs.

In a dig-out, hunters take shovels and dig into the ground until they?re deep enough to reach the fox. A dog is then dropped into the hole where the two animals tear at each other. Foxes are not the only victims in this situation, as dogs usually sustain heavy injuries themselves. The fox is then removed from the hole and fed to the hounds. Any fox unattainable with a dog is dragged out with a pole wrapped in barbed wire.

The third and final most problematic practice is that of live hare coursing. Hares are set loose within wired enclosures and are then hunted down by dogs until they are killed. Dogs here too sustain injuries. All three of these activities are legal in Ireland.

However, Ireland?s animal laws are now being updated with the revision of the Animal Welfare Bill. Ireland?s Parliamentary Committee is currently looking over the bill and deciding which amendments are to be included and changed. Now is the chance for these appallingly cruel and inhumane practices to be banned forever. These three forms of animal cruelty result in countless fox and hare deaths every year, alongside the injury and deaths of many dogs. The suffering that comes from these ?sport? activities engaged in for recreation is unacceptable and must be ended now.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear?Committee on Communications, Natural Resources, and Agriculture,

You are currently deciding on which amendements to include on Ireland?s revised Animal Welfare Bill. It is necessary that we bring to your attention the opportunity to end three activities, or ?blood-sports,? which have caused?immeasurable?suffering for far too long.

The first of these is the long-popular practice of fox-hunting. Although this sport has been around for some time, there is no reason for it to continue as it is merely another form of extreme animal cruelty. The second is the related practice of fox dig-outs in which foxes are removed from their underground hiding places using exceedingly horrible methods. The final one is live hare coursing where hares are hunted down within wired enclosures. All of these practices not only harm foxes and hares, but cause the dogs used by hunters to sustain heavy injuries as well.

Not a single one of these activities is in any way acceptable, and serve only to display disgusting modes of recreation through the abuse and murder of innocent animals. Please, do not waste this opportunity. Ban all three of these ?blood-sports? with the revision of the Animal Welfare Bill.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]
