I was doing some coaching work with one of my corporate clients recently.? As we were chatting she showed me a list of career derailers that her company had developed.? It was an interesting list ? and one that has universal applicability, not just in the company that developed it.? There is some great career success advice in this list.

Career Derailers

• Unable or unwilling to adapt and grow.
• Excessive self-interest.
• Lack of courage and conviction.
• Overly controlling style.
• Saying one thing ? doing another.

Let?s take a look at each of these derailers in some detail?

Unable or Unwilling to Adapt and Grow

The world changes rapidly.? Successful people have to adapt and grow with these changes.? In 1859 in his seminal book, On the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin said?

?Looking to the future?which groups will ultimately prevail, no man can predict; for we well know that many groups, formerly most extensively developed, have now become extinct.?

You don?t want to become extinct.? Tweet 82 in my career advice book Success Tweets says, ?Learn faster than the world changes.? In a world that never stops changing you can never stop learning and growing.?

In order to adapt and grow, you need to become a lifelong learner.? All of the people I know who are committed to lifelong learning have several traits in common.? They all?

?Are humble.? They admit what they don?t know.? This is the first step in learning what they need to know.

?Question the status quo.? They realize that because something is right today, it may not be right tomorrow.? They know that doing things ?the way we?ve always done them? is not good reasoning.

?Are intellectually curious.? They truly want to learn and find learning fun, interesting and stimulating.? They see life as a journey in which they are constantly learning.

?Are willing to try new stuff.? They experiment and see what works.? When things work, they use them.

?Are not afraid to fail.? They see failure as an opportunity to learn.? Just as they incorporate what works into their repertoire, they use failures as stepping stones to other experiments.

?Are tolerant of ambiguity.? Learning creates ambiguity.? These people are willing to let go of past ways of doing things in order to come up with new ways of doing things in the future.? The gap between the past and future can make for an uncomfortable present.

?Focus on staying ahead of the pack.? They are early adopters ? of new technology and new ways of thinking.? They realize that knowledge has a short half-life today.? They keep learning to stay ahead.

Excessive Self-Interest

Business is a team game.? You can?t succeed if you don?t build strong relationships.? Helping others is the best way to build strong relationships.? Tweet 128 in Success Tweets says, ?When meeting someone new, ask yourself, ?What can I do to help this person??? You?ll build stronger relationships this way.?

The next time you meet someone new, ask yourself, ?What can I do to help this person??? Most people ask the opposite question, ?How can this person help me??? By thinking ?how can I help? first, you?ll be better able to build strong relationships that will pay off and help you create life and career success.? Way back on January 20, 1961, in his inauguration speech as President of the United States, John Kennedy said, ?Ask not what your country can do for you.? Ask what you can do for your country.?? These words ? with a slight twist ? are true today and will help you become a life and career success.? Ask not what others can do for you.? Ask what you can do for others.
Lack of Courage and Conviction

Sometimes you?ll be called on to make tough decisions.? Often these decisions take courage.? Your personal values will help you find the courage to do what?s right.? Tweet 18 in Success Tweets says, ?You?ve got to stand for something or you?ll fall for anything.? Your values help you make decisions in ambiguous situations.?

If you know your rock and roll, you know that the first sentence in Success Tweet 18 is borrowed from a John Mellencamp song ? one of my favorites.? And it?s true.? You, me, all of us, need to stand for something if we?re going to create the life and career success we want and deserve.? Your personal values are what you stand for.

Here are my personal values: common sense, simplicity, optimism, human potential, value, trust, individuality, hard work, the power of 1.? These values are the foundation on which I have built my life and career.? They guide my decision making.? I turn to them when I need help figuring out what to do.? They have served me well.

In April of 1988, I was facing a major life and career decision ? stay in a good, secure, albeit somewhat unsatisfying job with a top-notch corporation, or strike out on my own as an independent career success coach, speaker and consultant.? I looked to my values.? Optimism, human potential and hard work jumped out at me.? I am an optimist.? I believe in human potential, including mine.? I have always been a hard worker.

Reflecting on my values ? especially these three ? made the decision easy.? An optimist, someone who believes in human potential, and a hard worker would take the chance and start a small business ? which is what I did.? I became The Common Sense Guy many years ago and have never looked back.? My values guided me through the decision-making process.

Overly Controlling Style

No one wants to work with an ego maniac.? If you want to create the career success you deserve, you have to learn to work with people.? The best way to do this is to listen to them.? Don?t always push your ideas.? You will build stronger relationships by listening to what other people have to say and responding appropriately.

Tweet 107 in Success Tweets says, ?Listen more than you speak.? Pay attention to what other people say; respond appropriately.?? Listening is the key to avoid becoming known as someone with an overly controlling style.? Learn to listen well.? Listening, like a lot of career success advice, is just common sense.? Show the other person you are engaged.? Focus on understanding, not on rebutting points with which you don?t agree.? Don?t get distracted by words that trigger your emotions.? Ask clarification questions to ensure you understand what is being said.? Repeat what you?ve heard.? Most of all, get in the habit of listening more than speaking.

Saying One Thing ? Doing Another

In my book, Your Success GPS I suggest that everyone you meet rates you.? I have created a little model about your ratings:

• R stands for Responsiveness
• A stands for Assurance
• T stands for Tangibles
• E stands for Empathy

When you do what you say, people see you as responsive to their needs.? They feel assured that they can count on you.? They know the tangibles you promise will be there when they need them.? Finally, when you do what you say, people know that you are empathic.? That you put yourself in their shoes and do what you say you?ll do.

The career success coach point here is simple common sense.? If you want to create the life and career success you want and deserve you need to avoid the following five career derailers: 1) Being unable or unwilling to adapt and grow; 2) Excessive self-interest; 3) Lack of courage and conviction; 4) Overly controlling style; and 5) Saying one thing and doing another.?? To put this career advice in a positive way? 1) Change and adapt as the world, business, and your company change.? 2) Focus on what you can do for other people ? not just what they can do for you.? 3) Know your personal values.? Let them guide your decision making.? Stand up for what is right and the things in which you believe.? 4) Relax, let others take the lead on occasion.? 5) Do what you say you will.

Rise Of The Robotic Bees

The Harvard Monolithic Bee (or "Mobee") pops up within an assembly scaffold, which performs more than 20 origami assembly folds in the process.

Do bees, swarms of bees, make you nervous? Maybe not. Maybe they remind you of honey, flowers and warm summer days. You stay out of their way and they stay out of yours. What if, however, the bees weren't bees at all but hundreds (or thousands) of autonomous microbots, facsimiles of the real thing, buzzing around in the real world?

That's not Hollywood fantasy any more. It appears to be within reach. Researchers in the Microrobotics Lab at Harvard's School of Engineering and Applied Sciences say that they expect their Robobees project will demonstrate flying, autonomous micro-air-vehicles modeled on insects within the next 2 1/2 years.

?

It won't be easy, according to Rob Wood, the project's principal investigator.

"The challenges that you get when you scale these things down mean that you have to reinvent everything, everything has to come from scratch, every one of the technologies," Wood said in an interview last week. "There is nothing off the shelf."

His team has recently taken a significant step forward with the demonstration of a manufacturing process that they believe will pave the way to industrial-scale production of microbots, spitting out thousands of them with ease.

The prototype creature built with this process has been dubbed the "Mobee," short for Monolithic Bee. With its carbon-fiber airframe and titanium wings, it doesn't really look like a bee. It's more like an intricate box frame with insect-like wings. The creatures are so lightweight that Harvard says the mass of 63 Mobees is equal to the mass of one United States quarter.

Roughly speaking, the Mobee starts as more than 18 plain sheets of material. Each sheet of carbon fiber, titanium, plastic, etc. is cut to a certain pattern by a laser. The sheets are then sandwiched together into a cohesive whole. The final step is where the magic happens.

Jacks beneath the flat sandwich push upward, allowing hinges in the design to transform the package into a three-dimensional microbot. Largely speaking, it's finished at that point. Harvard describes the process as something akin to what happens in the pages of a pop-up book or in the creation of complex origami figures.

Graduate students Pratheev Sreetharan and Peter Whitney helped develop the manufacturing process. Sreetharan, who also designed the Mobee prototype, says the hard part was hand drawing the CAD files for each of the 18 layers the laser-milling device had to shape.

"For a device like Mobee, I would say I designed it in 2 1/2 weeks. That's actual design work," Sreetharan said. "Two-and-a-half months after that was literally drawing lines [for the CAD files]."

Before the development of this pop-up manufacturing concept, the Robobees team had built each individual creature painstakingly by hand. Only about 15 percent of the bees built this way worked properly. With the new technique, where robots are essentially building robots, based on a human design, the yield is in the range of 100 percent; perfection.

The beauty of the technique, besides precision and efficiency, is that it can integrate future elements of the project directly into the designs. So, when the sensor, control and power elements of the Robobee project are ready, they can be added as integral component layers of the bee structure, rather than as bolt-on additions to the design.

Before the fully functioning Robobee becomes a reality, however, Harvard hopes to take this manufacturing process into other arenas. They believe, among other things, that it could used today in the manufacture of articulated, electro-mechanical surgical instruments. The team is working with the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering to apply what they've learned with Mobee to the manufacture of instruments for laparoscopy and endoscopy.

Graduate student Whitney says their technique is a fit for these applications because if falls in a zone between the very small processes applied to computer chips and the larger processes found in traditional machine manufacturing.

"When you want to make a fully integrated device that's on the scale of 1 or 2 cm, it's not economical to scale up the computer-chip, integrated-circuit manufacturing technology; it's just too expensive," Whitney said. "On the other hand, trying to scale down traditional manufacturing, you're sort of in a Swiss-watch situation where you can make tiny components, but then you have to assemble them all together, and that's a tedious process; so we sort of live in between those two worlds."

The real question hanging in the air, so to say, is how the bees themselves might be used once they've been endowed with the power, sensor and control mechanisms needed to fly and operate on their own.

The obvious answer is surveillance of all types, whether it's for the military in combat or scientists tracking changes in the environment or spooks keeping tabs on their targets. Oh, and they might also be able to pollinate crops of vegetables and flowers, too.

We have a few years, at least, to figure out how how swarms of robotic insects might fit into our lives. The Robobees team is working along three tracks: body, brain and colony. Each one presents its own challenges. Integrating the three strands, which are being worked on in parallel, is a whole other set of hurdles.

Mobee is just one hurdle cleared. We'll have to wait and see two years from now if the swarm is really on the horizon, and a little longer to decide if we need to run from it.

A Closer Look at Google Public DNS

Earlier this month, Google announced that it had become the largest public DNS service in the world, handling an average of more than 70 billion requests a day. From Google?s point of view, this was great. As it pointed out in its official blog, a good DNS service helps make the Web faster and more secure. That?s true.?But is a giant DNS in Google?s hands really good for the world?

The DNS or Domain Name System is often described as the ?phone book? of the Internet, but that analogy tends to understate its importance. Imagine that you?ve suddenly landed in the middle of a giant megalopolis without any street names or building addresses or distinguishing characteristics and no working GPS. That would be the Internet without a domain name system.

But while the DNS system is criticial for planetary communications, helping to run it typically hasn?t brought anyone power or glory. This led to a certain amount of neglect, which in turn created a business opportunity for companies willing to tackle the job of improving DNS.

Three years ago, I sat down with David Ulevitch, a developer who founded OpenDNS in 2005 to help make the Internet faster and more reliable for individuals and businesses by providing a better domain name service. At the time, OpenDNS had built a small but profitable business providing improved DNS for free to individuals and for a fee to enterprises. It later grew to operate the largest network of public DNS servers, serving millions of users around the world.

Unlike Google, Ulevitch has never struck me as being obsessed with world domination, so I reached out to him this week to ask what he thought of Google?s entry, and now colossal presence, in the space.

What are the implications of Google being the largest public DNS service? Is this good for ordinary people who use the Internet?

First, I think it?s a clear indication that Google takes DNS seriously. I?ve always said that Google?s purview is limited to everything between the user and the advertisement. DNS fits squarely within those sights and cuts across a number of strategic areas of focus for Google?speed, security, analytics and control. I think efforts to make the Internet faster is good for ordinary people, but I think that there?s more to Google?s motives then pure benevolence. That?s not to say good can?t be a byproduct, but rather, there are ancillary benefits that may not be as friendly to the ordinary Internet user.

With DNS, it?s possible to control key components of Internet navigation. ?Google already controls search, they are quickly gaining market share to control the browser, and when you put in DNS, it becomes the trifecta of complete navigational control. ?The ?omnibox? is something Google introduced with Chrome, but I actually introduced it to Google PM Sundar Pichai a number of years before Chrome existed when demoing our vision for OpenDNS to him as he was then the PM for Google Toolbar, and other Google desktop products.

What role has Google played in the DNS ecosystem? Do you see them as a competitor or a partner?

Google has helped raise the importance of DNS above the network engineering community, which has been really good. They?ve also worked with us to advance the state of the art for DNS performance, something we?ve really enjoyed working with them to make happen. It?s not so much competition as it is choice in the market. Judge awards iPhone user $850 in throttling case

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (AP) ? When AT&T started slowing down the data service for his iPhone, Matt Spaccarelli, an unemployed truck driver and student, took the country's largest telecommunications company to small claims court. And won.

His award: $850.

Pro-tem Judge Russell Nadel found in favor of Spaccarelli in Ventura Superior Court in Simi Valley on Friday, saying it wasn't fair for the company to purposely slow down his iPhone, when it had sold him an "unlimited data" plan.

Spaccarelli could have many imitators. AT&T has some 17 million customers with "unlimited data" plans who can be subject to throttling. That's nearly half of its smartphone users. AT&T forbids them from consolidating their claims into a class action or taking them to a jury trial. That leaves small claims actions and arbitration.

Late last year, AT&T started slowing down data service for the top 5 percent of its smartphone subscribers with "unlimited" plans. It had warned that it would start doing so, but many subscribers have been surprised by how little data use it takes for throttling to kick in ? often less than AT&T provides to those on limited or "tiered" plans.

Spaccarelli said his phone is being throttled after he's used 1.5 gigabytes to 2 gigabytes of data within a new billing cycle. Meanwhile, AT&T provides 3 gigabytes of data to subscribers on a tiered plan that costs the same ? $30 per month.

When slowed down, the phone can still be used for calls and text messaging, but Web browsing is painfully slow, and video streaming doesn't work at all.

AT&T spokesman Marty Richter said the company will appeal the judge's ruling.

"At the end of the day, our contract governs our relationship with our customers," he said.

AT&T area sales manager Peter Hartlove, who represented the company before Nadel, declined to comment on the ruling. He argued in court that his employer has the right to modify or cancel customers' contracts if their data usage adversely affects the network.

Companies with as many potentially aggrieved customers as AT&T usually brace themselves for a class-action lawsuit. But last year, the Supreme Court upheld a clause in the Dallas-based company's subscriber contract that prohibits customers from taking their complaints to class actions or jury trials.

Arbitration and small-claims court cases are cheaper and faster than jury trials, but they force plaintiffs to appear in person and prepare their own statements. In a class-action suit, the work can be handled by one law firm on behalf of millions of people.

That means thousands ? and possibly hundreds of thousands ? of people who feel abused by AT&T's policy could seek to challenge the company, one by one, in arbitration or small claims court. The customer contract specifies that those who win an award from the company in arbitration that is greater than the company's pre-arbitration settlement offer will get at least $10,000. Spaccarelli picked the same amount for his claim, though AT&T's stipulation about a minimum award doesn't apply in small claims.

Nadel looked instead at the remaining 10 months in Spaccarelli's two-year contract with AT&T and estimated that he might pay $85 a month on average for using additional data. AT&T charges $10 for every extra gigabyte over 3 gigabytes.

Nadel said it's not fair for AT&T to make a promise to Spaccarelli when he buys the phone while burying terms in his contract that give the company the right to cut down data speeds.

Spaccarelli, 39, researched his case for a few months, and then spent three days putting together a binder of documents to bring to court.

"I need the money, but for me, this case is not about money at all," Spaccarelli. "You don't tell somebody 'you have unlimited' and then cut them off."

Spaccarelli didn't quite uphold his side of the customer contract, and that's one reason his data usage was high. He used the iPhone to provide a link to the Internet for his iPad tablet, a setup known as "tethering." AT&T doesn't allow tethering unless customers pay extra for it, which Spaccarelli didn't do. It detected his tethering last year, and switched him from the "unlimited" plan to a limited one. He complained, and got his "unlimited" plan reinstated.

Even with the tethering, Spaccarelli's data usage wasn't excessive, he said ? about 5 gigabytes per month. AT&T's Hartlove told Nadel about the tethering, and Spaccarelli admitted to it.

Earlier this month, a Southern California woman won a small-claims action against Honda over the gas mileage she got out of her Civic hybrid car. She was awarded $9,867. Meanwhile, a pending class action against Honda over the same issue would net Civic owners a few hundred dollars each. The plaintiff, Heather Peters, is an ex-lawyer who had opted out of the settlement.

AT&T's throttling of "unlimited" data comes as it tries to deal with limited capacity on its wireless network. When the iPhone was new, AT&T had ample capacity on its network, and wanted to lure customers with the peace of mind offered by unlimited plans. Now, a majority of AT&T subscribers on contract-based plans have smartphones, and the proportion is growing every month. That's putting a big load on AT&T's network.

Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA also throttle users, but their policies are gentler. Verizon only throttles if the specific cell tower a "heavy user" subscriber's phone is communicating with is congested at that moment. T-Mobile's throttling levels are higher for the same price, and the levels are spelled out ahead of time. AT&T subscribers have no way of knowing if they'll be throttled before a warning message drops in. If they keep using their phones, throttling kicks in a few days later.

The Leaving Cert is the last exam given in the Irish school system for secondary pupils. These are the final exams given before college and is considered very difficult by nature. Most students get years of preparation for this examination, and this is normally known as the ?senior cycle?. The standard age of exam takers is between 17-19 years old.

The most common programme is the Established Leaving Cert, that is a 2-year programme that covers several subjects. Subjects tend to be studied at Higher or Ordinary level, which is equal to Honours or Pass levels. Some subjects, including Maths and Irish could be studied at Foundation level. Throughout the senior cycle, students usually study between 6 to seven subjects, Established Leaving Certificate students typically take a minimum of 5. Some Colleges require six subjects, which includes English, Irish and a final third language. A Science Miniseries: The Big Story of Alcohol, Civilization and a Little Fungus

There is a little magic embodied in every bit of bread or cheese and every sip of beer and wine. ??That magic is microbial and, at least in the case of the bread, beer and wine, the microbe doing the magic is yeast, of a single species, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, what one might reasonably call civilization?s yeast, or at least the yeast at the heart of civilization-its slightly sour lollipop center.

We don?t think about yeast. We buy it in packets at the store. We add water and wait. It is a creature akin to the sea monkeys you can order in the back of magazines, a sort of cheap novelty. Yet, yeast has long been, if not the bread and butter, at least the bread, beer and wine of agricultural peoples (which is to say, nearly all of us). Yeast, in many ways, saved lives (though it also takes them) and may even have been part of the reason we began to farm in the first place.

In a series of six articles published on the Guest Blog, I considered the story of yeast.

On day 1, I began by considering the possibility that alcohol (and within it yeast) may have been one of the reason crops were first planted, in part because in times of contagious disease and polluted water supplies alcohol might have helped keep us healthy.

On day 2, I next considered new research on fruit flies suggesting fruit flies do use alcohol as medicine, just as our ancestors might have.

On day 3, I found that unknown to those studying the fruit flies, it turns out a separate literature has considered whether alcohol kills human pathogens and, in turn, influences our fate, whether historically or even today.

On day 4, I began to consider the wicked side of fungi such as yeast. In thinking about the story of alcohol and yeast, we tend to think about having tamed yeast, in order to meet our needs. But in other stories in nature, for example that of termite balls, animal societies seem more likely to be tricked by fungi than in control of them. ?Fungi, like humans, can have ill intent.

On day 5, I wrote about the other societies we tend to think of as farming, all of which we tend to say ?farm fungi.? ?But in each of these cases, including our own, ?it is just as reasonable to say the fungus is farming the animals.

On day 6, I concluded by considering what remains to be understood in the story of fungi, alcohol and humans. In the end, if we are to carve the story of our interactions on the cave wall, the fungi need to be there. They are among our most important partners. They may even be in control.

These articles form part of the bigger story I?ve lost myself in over the last year or so, a story of our interactions with other species. These interactions not only influence us, they make us who we are. Yeast has shaped humans and societies, just as worms, bacteria, lions and many other species have too. ?Sister Sledge said it best when she sang, ?we are family, all my microbes, worms, predators and me.? Well, she did not sing it just like that, ?but she should have.

In working hard on a story like this one, a story that has required hundreds of hours of work, lost sleep and dreams filled with writhing worms and dividing cells, one begins to wonder what the end is (or when it ends?). I can?t precisely explain why I find these species so fascinating or why I feel I need to write about them. I can?t help myself. But I think there is precedent to my wanderings.

Here, I?ll return to the caves I was able to visit this week, deep caves in which, more than ten thousand years ago our ancestors made art. A hundred years of research has concluded resolutely that it is unclear why the early peoples of Europe and elsewhere painted caves, carved bison sculptures or made small sculptures of voluptuous women. This art was not easy. ?The artists crawled into caves as deep as they could and painted what was meaningful in one way or another to them. They did so using fire for light. They did so when they could have been running around playing pin the spear-head on the mammoth. Why? Maybe it was magic. Maybe it was religion. Maybe they did not know why they were doing it either. They painted similar subjects again and again, in different forms and from different directions. They painted them because for whatever reason they ?needed to.? I can?t explain why they painted the caves and yet I get it. ?The species with which we coexist make us human. They are who we are and so maybe that is what the cave artists were after, images of who they were, a kind of self-portrait a confrontation in those dark corridors with their existence. They were bisons, mammoths, reindeer, lions, and magic. We are those same things and also, bacteria, yeast, wheat and worms and thousands of other species, species I want to record, if not on the cave wall, at least on paper, so we will know who they, and we, are.o they were.

Android 4.0 updates for Acer's A100, A500 leak ahead of April release

Good news for those of you patiently waiting for Acer's April release of Ice Cream Sandwich for its A100 and A500 tablets: the good people over at XDA seem to have found stable leaks of the update ready for your flashing. XDA forum member vache posted the files today, and says that the leak is running quite nicely on the A500. A quick look through the forum posts indicates that the leaks are smooth and relatively bug free, though the upgrade will indeed remove root access on your device.

Despite the good reviews, keep in mind that the files are not Acer's final build, and thus can come with a hidden bug or five. If you're feeling brave, you can grab the files at the source link; to flash, you'll need to rename the file to update.zip, place it on the root of your SD card, and boot into recovery. If the process sounds like gibberish to you, you might want to sit tight for another month for Acer to roll out the official OTA.
