Mining shares lift Britain's FTSE stock market

LONDON, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Britain's benchmark share index
rose on Friday as traders bought mining stocks which had fallen
sharply in previous sessions, although worries that central
banks may inch away from launching new stimulus for the economy
favoured more defensive equity sectors.
The blue-chip FTSE 100 index was up by 0.7 percent,
or 39 points, at 5,758.45 points, ending a four-day losing
streak that had seen the index fall by around 6 percent.
Mining stocks dominated the leaderboard, with Glencore
and Kazakhmys rising by 2.9 and 3.1 percent
respectively.
Shares in Glencore's planned merger partner Xstrata
also rose 2 percent, after both stocks had fallen 3 and 2.5
percent respectively on Thursday on the back of objections from
some investors to the terms of their merger deal.
Investors picked up mining stocks in case a speech by U.S.
Federal Reserve head Ben Bernanke on Friday gives out more
signals of measures to help the economy, such as quantitative
easing, which would boost economically-sensitive shares such as
the miners.
"People are bottom fishing around the miners. They are
high-beta stocks, which means that if the market goes higher,
they will go higher first," said JN Financial senior trader
Adrian Redmond.
However, Redmond said he did not expect any fresh monetary
steps to stimulate growth in the immediate future, from either
the Fed or the European Central Bank (ECB), which has a series
of meetings in September to deal with the euro zone debt crisis.
TOO EARLY TO BUY CYCLICAL STOCKS
Brown Shipley fund manager John Smith also said he did not
expect an immediate launch of new action to fight the global
economic slowdown, leading him to favour more "defensive" equity
sectors such as healthcare or food companies.
Smith favoured stocks such as drinks group Diageo,
healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline, consumer goods group
Unilever and utility National Grid over the
miners at present.
"We are of the opinion that there will be some more QE
(quantitative easing) but we don't see it in the short term.
We've sat on the sidelines. It's a little bit too early to be
aggressively buying cyclical stocks such as the miners," he
said.
Slightly stronger than expected U.S. economic data over the
past two weeks has helped cool expectations of fresh
quantitative easing by the Fed in the near term.
Around 44 percent of investors in a Reuters poll published
on Thursday expected the central bank to embark on a third round
of bond purchases by end-2012, down from 70 percent in a similar
poll last month.
The FTSE 100 could move around 1.5 percent in either
direction depending on how Bernanke's speech pans out, added
James A. Hyerczyk, an analyst at Autochartist.

Shell expects to begin restarting U.S. Gulf platforms on Friday
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell said on Wednesday that the company expects to begin restarting and restaffing its shut Gulf of Mexico operations on Friday after finishing damage assessments on Thursday in Tropical Storm Isaac's wake.
Shell said its central and east-central Gulf oil and gas platforms remained shut and evacuated on Wednesday as the storm, newly downgraded from a hurricane, hovered over the Louisiana coastline.
The weather conditions blocked plans to do flyover inspections, which are routine after a storm moves ashore.
"We will continue to monitor weather reports and respond accordingly," Shell said. ??

Narconon Meetings Address the Dangers of Alcohol Addiction ...
Over consumption of alcohol for extended periods of time has the potential to negatively affect every organ system in the human body. However, when a person become physically addicted to alcohol it can be even more dangerous for them to quit drinking without the supervision of a medical doctor. The alcohol withdrawal timeline usually last about 3 to 5 days with symptoms peaking at about 48 hours. If a person goes through alcohol withdrawal without medical supervision or assistance they can suffer from the following symptoms:

- hot and cold flashes

The reason for this is because benzodiazepines cause a physical dependence that is very similar to that of alcohol but can be incurred over a much shorter period of time. This is why the highest dose of benzodiazepine is given to the person in their initial stages of withdrawal and decreased on a day-to-day basis over a period of about 3 to 5 days.
Ativan or Librium are the benzodiazepines that are most commonly used for alcohol withdrawal.
In addition to a prescription of some type of benzodiazepine, the person is often given a supplement of B complex vitamins as well as magnesium. The reason for this is that many alcoholics suffer from a deficiency of vitamins especially of the B family. Extended deficiency of the vitamin B1 can cause severe and sometimes permanent brain damage. It is also found that people who drink heavily often have low electrolyte counts and if this is not remedied they are more likely to go into delirium tremens upon cessation of use.
While the acute stages of alcohol withdrawal usually last from about 3 to 5 days, a person can suffer from tremors of the extremities as well as general fatigue or malaise for up to about a month to six weeks after they had their last drink. It is recommended at this point in time that the person eat plenty of fresh vegetables as well as fruits because it is been found that this can greatly improve the person?s general feelings of health and vitality after they quit drinking. This may be because this type of diet provides the person with plenty of vitamins and minerals that they desperately need but were not getting from their liquid diet of alcohol.
After a person has gone through the physical withdrawal, it is very important that they follow up with a very good program to help them through their mental addiction. Marketing Manager, Scott Wentzell, answered, ?The word ?Cabinetmakers? is an old-world term used for craftspeople working in furniture.?? He continued, ?As Tom was building his business, he abbreviated his name Thomas to ?Thos.? as that?s how it would have appeared on the shingle of an old-world craftsman.?
It remains just so now, that wording still stamped on Moser?s signature signage.? And yes, apparently everyone in the shop does call Thomas Moser, Tom.? Based on my short encounter with the man, the author of Artistry in Wood ? pretty fitting I?d say (and more on that in a bit).

What I witnessed, in my few days, was a company . . . built on legacy and tradition, with deep rootings in both family and education . . . connecting intimately with a/their client (St. Tim?s).
It?s probably as good a point as any to note that Thos. Moser Cabinetmakers is celebrating its 40th year.? And they are still celebrating, as part and parcel of Tom?s early mission ? a connectedness of individual (us, people) and (every) object (they produce).? While some practical methods of production have been updated (as I found), the underlying principles remain wholly unchanged.? And more on that, well . . . now!? Formerly a Bates College professor, Tom Moser left teaching in 1971 to start making one-of-a-kind furniture in New Gloucester, Maine. ?Tom may have been the sole designer and builder, but he was hardly alone. His wife Mary managed sales and finances, while their four sons trained as young apprentices.
Today, Tom Moser continues to conceive and design new products in collaboration with his youngest son, David. ?Andy Moser is an accomplished craftsman and works in the shop. Aaron Moser directs the company?s growing Contract Sales division.
While many, including Tom, speak frequently of Tom?s close creative work with David Moser (Principal Designer), it was Aaron Moser, in this case, who was the principal individual working to orchestrate not only bringing the group from St. Tim?s in, but also turning a once modest dream (of a furniture plan) into a fully functioning reality. ??Here?s that story . . .
- St. Timothy?s School, an all-girl?s boarding and day school located just outside of Baltimore, MD, has a $10 million renovation and new construction project under way.? Included in this renovation is 20,000 + square feet of classroom space, and a new construction addition that will add nearly another 20,000 sf. ?The new construction portion of this project includes, among other things, a new library.

Head of School, and a lifelong fan of Moser?s furniture, Randy S. Stevens says of this project, ?The entire addition is being built around Moser designs.?? Thos. Moser was commissioned and has built the seminar tables that will be used in the classrooms in the renovated portion of the building. ?Stevens continues, ?In addition, they are constructing all of the furniture for the archives, also in the renovated portion of the building. ?They (Moser) are building all of the library furniture for the new building as well as the furniture in a Center for the Study of World Languages and Cultures.?
But Stevens also speaks of his one-time apprehensiveness.? Like many perhaps, he wrongly felt that Moser could be unobtainable.? (A quick look at the level of workmanship may frequently fuel this.)? But working closely with Aaron Moser, St. Tim?s project became not only a possibly, but, well? you know.
Moser, it seems, is quite simply well versed in direct work with clients.? This skill honed perhaps via the means by which they sell.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Navy SEAL's firsthand account of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden pulls back the veil on the secret operations conducted almost nightly by elite American forces against terrorist suspects.
Former SEAL Matt Bissonnette's account contradicted in key details the account of the raid presented by administration officials in the days after the May 2011 raid in Abbotabad, Pakistan, that killed the al-Qaida leader, and raised questions about whether the SEALs followed to the letter the order to only use deadly force if they deemed him a threat.
Bissonnette wrote that the SEALs spotted bin Laden at the top of a darkened hallway and shot him in the head even though they could not tell whether he was armed. Administration officials have described the SEALs shooting bin Laden only after he ducked back into a bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.
Military experts said Wednesday that if Bissonnette's recollection is accurate, the SEALS made the right call to open fire on the terrorist mastermind who had plenty of time to reach for a weapon or explosives as they made their way up to the third level of the house where he hid.
Bissonnette wrote the book, "No Easy Day," under the pseudonym Mark Owen as one of the men in the room when they killed bin Laden. The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint. The Associated Press purchased a copy Tuesday.
For years, the primary weapon in the war on terror has been unmanned drones firing missiles from the sky. But the Bissonnette book reveals a more bloody war waged by special operators, one the public almost never gets to see close up.
The book offers intimate details of a special operations mission. The most memorable scenes are also the most human moments. Bissonnette describes one of the SEALs dressing the wounds of a woman who was shot when she lunged toward the SEALs. In another scene, a terrified mother clutches her child and a young girl identifies the dead man as Osama bin Laden, seemingly unaware of the significance of those words.
In that regard, the bin Laden raid seems destined to become an anachronism. Nearly every top al-Qaida figure killed by the United States since the 9/11 attacks has died in a remote-controlled strike by unmanned drone aircraft ? their deaths seen back in Washington via high-definition video. An estimated 80 top terrorist leaders have been killed in places like Pakistan and Yemen, according to The Long War Journal.com, which tracks such airborne strikes.
Special operations troops often conduct raids similar to the bin Laden strike a dozen times a night in Afghanistan, and previously in Iraq, killing thousands of mostly mid- and lower-level terrorists. It's all part of a war on terror that is winding down and giving way to the drone war outside traditional war zones, given the scheduled drawdown of most U.S. troops in Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
"No Easy Day" shows how routine such operations have become. But the public rarely hears about them. This raid to capture bin Laden, though, was historic.
The SEALS, according to Bissonnette's description, were prepared as they had been in other raids for a gunfight in close quarters, which likely would last only a few seconds, with no margin for error. By the time the SEALs reached the top floor of bin Laden's compound, roughly 15 minutes had passed, giving the terror leader adequate time to strap on a suicide vest or get a gun, he said.
Bissonnette says he was directly behind a point man going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. Near the top, he said, he heard two silenced shots fired by the first SEAL into the hallway. He wrote that the point man had seen a man peeking out of a door on the right side of the hallway, but Bissonnette could not tell from his vantage point whether the bullets hit the target.
The author writes that the man ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find him crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body. Once they wiped the blood off his face, they were convinced it was bin Laden.
Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner. He and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sights on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless.
The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.
National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor late Tuesday would not comment on the apparent contradiction between the administration's account and the book's version.
Bissonnette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, an administration lawyer told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said if bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should detain him.
"If they didn't feel like there was a threat, they would have captured him," co-author Kevin Maurer told the AP on Wednesday. "But from when they first hit the ground, all the way until they got to the third deck, they had encountered armed men, which made the use of force essential," said Maurer, a former AP reporter.
Bissonnette writes that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid. But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.
In an interview scheduled to air Sunday on CBS' "60 Minutes," Bissonnette said the book was "not political whatsoever" and not timed to influence the upcoming national elections. He said it was to commemorate the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and credit those whose work made the mission to get bin Laden a success.
"My worry from the beginning is, you know, it's a political season. This book is not political whatsoever. It doesn't bad-mouth either party, and we specifically chose Sept. 11 to keep it out of the politics. If these ? crazies on either side of the aisle want to make it political, then shame on them."
CBS Bissonnette was disguised and his voice altered for the interview. The network used only his pseudonym and not his name.
A former deputy judge advocate general for the Air Force defended the decision to shoot the man the SEALs saw in the hallway.
"In a confined space like that where it is clear that there are hostiles, the SEALs need to take reasonable steps to ensure their safety and accomplish the mission," said the former JAG, ret. Maj. Gen. Charlie Dunlap, who now teaches at Duke University law school.
The Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information, and could take legal action against Bissonnette.
In a statement provided to the AP, the SEAL author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."
The book does include information not previously reported about specific CIA officers' involvement in the raid.
Bissonnette's real name was first revealed by Fox News and confirmed to the AP.
Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.

Australia reaches out to nonaligned states at Iran summit
Australian envoys attending a nonaligned summit in Tehran on Thursday are to reach out to several participating countries, but will walk out of the event if Iranian leaders air their anti-Israeli rhetoric, an Australian foreign ministry spokesman said.
Australia's UN ambassador, Gary Quinlan, and a prime ministerial special envoy, Joanna Hewitt, will be attending the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit on Thursday and Friday as invited guests, the spokesman told AFP by telephone on Wednesday.
"If there is any anti-Israel rhetoric by Iranian officials, we will not attend, we will walk out," he said.
Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who is to open the summit on Thursday, and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have both called Israel a "cancerous tumour" that should vanish from the Middle East. Ahmadinejad in the past has also denied the Holocaust that occurred during World War II.
Iranian language in the summit itself was expected to be more muted, however, so as not to upset the 120 NAM member states taking part, which represent much of the developing world, or UN chief Ban Ki-moon, who will also be there as an observer.
Iran has portrayed the summit as a diplomatic coup against the United States and Israel, which have tried to isolate it internationally over its disputed nuclear programme.
Australia has joined Western pressure on Iran, and last week boosted its own sanctions against the Islamic republic by targeting Iran's energy and financial sectors.
Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr last week defended the envoys' attendance at the summit by telling Australia's Sky News television that "our foreign policy is not all about the US alliance, it's about more than that."
The Australian envoys in Tehran aim to communicate with several summit delegations, particularly those which do not host an Australian embassy, the foreign ministry spokesman said.
Their presence was also seen as helping Australia's bid to win a temporary UN Security Council seat to be decided by a UN vote in October, though the spokesman said that was not the main reason.
Australia was "working towards" winning that seat but was aware it had not lobbied for it as long as the two other contenders, European nations Finland and Luxembourg, the spokesman said.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A University of Central Florida assistant professor has developed a new material using nanotechnology, which could help keep pilots and sensitive equipment safe from destructive lasers.
UCF Assistant Professor Jayan Thomas, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University Associate Professor Rongchao Jin chronicle their work in the July issue of the journal Nano Letters.
Thomas is working with gold nanoparticles and studying their properties when they are shrunk into a small size regime called nanoclusters. Nanoparticles are already microscopic in size, and a nanometer is about 1/80000 of the thickness of a single strand of human hair. Nanoclusters are on the small end and nanocrystals are on the larger end of the nanoregime. Nano clusters are so small that the laws of physics that govern the world people touch and smell aren't often observed.
"Nanoclusters occupy the intriguing quantum size regime between atoms and nanocrystals, and the synthesis of ultra-small, atomically precise metal nanoclusters is a challenging task," Thomas said.
Thomas and his team found that nanoclusters developed by adding atoms in a sequential manner could provide interesting optical properties. It turns out that the gold nanoclusters exhibit qualities that may make them suitable for creating surfaces that would diffuse laser beams of high energy. They appear to be much more effective than its big sister, gold nanocrystal which is the (nano)material used by artists to make medieval church window paintings.
So why does it matter?
Think of commercial pilots or fighter pilots. They use sunglasses or helmet shields to protect their eyes from the sun's light. If the glasses or helmet shield could be coated with nanoclusters tested in Thomas' lab at UCF, the shield could potentially diffuse high-energy beams of light, such as laser. Highly sensitive instruments needed for navigation and other applications could also be protected in case of an enemy attack using high energy laser beams.
"These results give me great pleasure since the technique we used to study the optical properties of these atomically precise particle is one invented by UCF Professors Eric VanStryland and David Hagan many years ago," Thomas said. "But the progression we've made is very exciting."
Because nanoclusters appear to have a better ability to diffuse high beams of energy, they are a promising area for future development. There is still plenty of applications to be explored using these very interesting atomically engineered materials. Until now, much research has been focused on the larger nanocrystal.
Thomas is also exploring the use of these particles in the polymer material used for 3D telepresence to make it more sensitive to light. If successful, it can take the current polymers a step closer to developing real time 3D telepresence.
3D-Telepresence provides a holographic illusion to a viewer who is present in another location by giving that person a 360-degree view (in 3D) of everything that's going on. It's a step beyond 3-D and is expected to revolutionize the way people see television and in how they participate in activities around the world. For example, by allowing a viewer to "walk around" a remote location as if in a virtual game, a surgeon could help execute a complicated medical procedure from thousands of miles away.
Others who contributed to the new material include: Reji Philip from the UCF's NanoScience Technology Center, Panit Chantharasupawong from UCF's College of Optics and Photonics, and Huifeng Qian from Department of Chemistry at the Carnegie Mellon University.

Armstrong commanded NASA's?Apollo 11 mission, which blasted off on July 16, 1969. Armstrong dropped onto the lunar surface four days later, and he and his two crewmates returned safely to Earth July 24, achieving a goal laid out by President John F. Kennedy eight years earlier.
"When he and his fellow crew members lifted off aboard Apollo 11 in 1969, they carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation," Obama said. "They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable ? that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible. And when Neil stepped foot on the surface of?the moon?for the first time, he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten."
Armstrong and Apollo 11 lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin spent more than 21 hours on the moon while fellow crewmate Michael Collins orbited above in their command module Columbia. The mission was Armstrong's second ? and final ? spaceflight; he had first blasted off aboard NASA's Gemini 8 mission in 1966.
Shortly after his boot first clomped into the gray lunar dirt, Armstrong uttered one of the 20th century's most famous lines: "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."
The astronaut will continue to inspire explorers of all kinds far into the future, Obama said.
"Today, Neil's spirit of discovery lives on in all the men and women who have devoted their lives to exploring the unknown ? including those who are ensuring that we reach higher and go further in space," he said. "That legacy will endure ? sparked by a man who taught us the enormous power of one small step."

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Hollywood may have run out of summer hits, but an anti-Obama documentary is helping to fill the gap.
Holdover movies easily topped the weekend box office again, led by Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables 2" at No. 1 for the second-straight weekend with $13.5 million.
The weekend's new wide releases were overshadowed by "2016: Obama's America," which expanded from limited to nationwide release and took in $6.2 million to finish at No. 8.
The documentary is a conservative critique of what the country would look like four years from now if President Barack Obama is re-elected.
Released by Rocky Mountain Pictures, "Obama's America" nearly matched the $6.3 million debut of the No. 7 movie, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's action tale "Premium Rush," a Sony release that played in more than twice as many theaters as the Obama documentary.
The weekend's other new wide releases opened weakly. Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell's road-chase comedy "Hit & Run," released by Open Road Films, debuted at No. 10 with $4.7 million, and the Warner Bros. fright flick "The Apparition" opened at No. 12 with $3 million.
The weak openings are typical of late August, a dumping ground for movies without much audience appeal as the summer blockbuster season winds down and young viewers switch to back-to-school mode.
But with less competition from Hollywood releases, it also opens the door for surprise successes such as "Obama's America."
"It's extremely rare for a documentary to break into the top-10, but August can be a land of opportunity for smaller films," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "Also, there's the fact that this is a very conservative film. Normally, it's Michael Moore-branded documentaries, the liberal documentaries that make all the money."
"Obama's America" opened in a handful of theaters in mid-July and did strong business as it gradually widened to more cities. It jumped into the top-10 this weekend as it expanded into 1,091 theaters, leading all other wide releases with an average of $5,717 a cinema.
That's a solid average, especially for a political documentary. But it pales next to the king of political documentaries, Moore's George W. Bush assault "Fahrenheit 9/11," which opened at No. 1 with $23.9 million in June 2004, averaging $27,558 in 868 theaters. "Fahrenheit 9/11" went on to become the top-grossing documentary ever with $119.1 million domestically.
"Obama's America" is based on the book "The Roots of Obama's Rage," written by Dinesh D'Souza, who co-directed the movie with John Sullivan.
The documentary now has climbed to a $9.1 million domestic total, with prospects for strong business as the Republican National Convention unfolds over the next few days.
D'Souza said Sunday that "Obama's America" will expand to more cities in the coming weeks and probably remain in theaters until early October, likely followed by a DVD release in the homestretch leading up to the Nov. 6 election.
Conservatives probably account for most of the documentary's audience so far, D'Souza said. But as with "Fahrenheit 9/11," which drew many conservatives out of curiosity, the attention "Obama's America" now is receiving could prompt left-leaning viewers to check it out, he said.
"What's happening is that people are really hungry for new information about Obama. There really is this sense that he remains an elusive figure," D'Souza said. "Then there's a second sense that the American dream is in the balance, the American dream is at stake, and that gives people a sense of anxiety about where the country is going."
Released by Lionsgate, "The Expendables 2" raised its domestic total to $52.3 million after two weekends.
In limited release, IFC Films' "Sleepwalk with Me" had a huge debut with $77,400 in a single New York City theater. Produced and co-written by Ira Glass of National Public Radio's "This American Life," ''Sleepwalk with Me" stars writer-director Mike Birbiglia in a semi-autobiographical story of a stand-up comic struggling with career and romance, along with bad bouts of sleepwalking.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

? John Young: First person to fly into space from Earth six times ? seven times counting his lunar liftoff in 1972. Flew two Gemini and two Apollo missions. Commander of the first space shuttle flight, aboard Columbia in 1981. Final space flight in 1983 aboard Columbia. Retired from NASA in 2004. Age: 81.
