Narconon Meetings Address the Dangers of Alcohol Addiction ...

Not only is alcohol addiction very hazardous to one?s mental health, it can also be very physically dangerous. Alcohol abuse is defined as a person compulsively drinking despite negative repercussions affecting their job, health, and family life. Alcoholism is defined as a person who compulsively drinks and is physically addicted to alcohol. While it can take a very long time for a person to become physically addicted to alcohol, the physical addiction to alcohol is actually one of the most dangerous in the world. This can put a person who is suffering from alcoholism in a very bad predicament if they do not know what to do to get out of it.

Over consumption of alcohol for extended periods of time has the potential to negatively affect every organ system in the human body. However, when a person become physically addicted to alcohol it can be even more dangerous for them to quit drinking without the supervision of a medical doctor. The alcohol withdrawal timeline usually last about 3 to 5 days with symptoms peaking at about 48 hours. If a person goes through alcohol withdrawal without medical supervision or assistance they can suffer from the following symptoms:

  • drastic increases in blood pressure
  • hot and cold flashes
  • heart palpitations
  • heart arrhythmia
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • anxiety
  • seizures
  • auditory and visual hallucinations
  • insomnia
  • weakness
  • delirium tremens
  • ? the shakes? which is the inability to hold one?s hands steadily or tremors of the extremities
  • Coma
  • Heart failure
  • death

Any person who feels that they may suffer from physical withdrawal upon the cessation of alcohol needs to seek medical supervision if they try to quit drinking. There are a few ways that a physician may choose to treat alcohol withdrawal. In most cases, a benzodiazepine is prescribed for short amount of time in decreasing doses. Benzodiazepine affects the brain in a way that is very similar to alcohol and has been proven to greatly aid in alcohol withdrawal. It is very important that a person not stay on benzodiazepines for a long amount of time when being treated for alcohol withdrawal. The reason for this is because benzodiazepines cause a physical dependence that is very similar to that of alcohol but can be incurred over a much shorter period of time. This is why the highest dose of benzodiazepine is given to the person in their initial stages of withdrawal and decreased on a day-to-day basis over a period of about 3 to 5 days.

Ativan or Librium are the benzodiazepines that are most commonly used for alcohol withdrawal.

In addition to a prescription of some type of benzodiazepine, the person is often given a supplement of B complex vitamins as well as magnesium. The reason for this is that many alcoholics suffer from a deficiency of vitamins especially of the B family. Extended deficiency of the vitamin B1 can cause severe and sometimes permanent brain damage. It is also found that people who drink heavily often have low electrolyte counts and if this is not remedied they are more likely to go into delirium tremens upon cessation of use.

While the acute stages of alcohol withdrawal usually last from about 3 to 5 days, a person can suffer from tremors of the extremities as well as general fatigue or malaise for up to about a month to six weeks after they had their last drink. It is recommended at this point in time that the person eat plenty of fresh vegetables as well as fruits because it is been found that this can greatly improve the person?s general feelings of health and vitality after they quit drinking. This may be because this type of diet provides the person with plenty of vitamins and minerals that they desperately need but were not getting from their liquid diet of alcohol.

After a person has gone through the physical withdrawal, it is very important that they follow up with a very good program to help them through their mental addiction. It has been found that the Narconon program works very well for the majority of people who are trying to overcome alcohol addiction.

Narconon is a nontraditional, long-term, individualized program that is based off of self-cognitive and life skill building therapy. Narconon meetings do not address addiction as a disease, but rather as a disability. People who suffer from an addictive personality usually do so because they are not equipped with the necessary tools that are needed to survive and succeed in life. Because of this, they often get themselves into difficult situation that they do not know how to fix which can cause extreme depression. The person will often self-medicate as a way to avoid confronting their problems and run from their negative feelings. When dramatic and painful events occur and life, depression can be a natural reaction. If a person does not know how to handle their own emotions nor the problems that created them they are going to feel very helpless indeed.

The Narconon program is geared towards helping a person learn how to take responsibility for their own life and actions as well as deal with their own negative emotions. This can be very hard for someone to do, especially if for a long time they played the victim and blamed all of their problems on others. However, once a person is able to do this they find that they feel very empowered and good about themselves. They now have the power to control their own life and make it the best that they possibly can. When a person gets to the point where they fully realize this, the world and all of it?s possibilities easily open up to that individual. At this point the person is not going to need to use drugs as a solution to life?s problems because the person is going to be able to easily recognize solutions that they were not able to see before. They won?t need to use drugs to feel good because what they are able to accomplish in life is going to make them feel good.
