A hockey rivalry that spans over 100 years is a great opportunity for Brett Gibson to bring quality hockey to his hometown.
"It allows people to see CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) hockey without having to travel to Kingston," said Gibson, coach of the Queen's Gaels men's hockey team.
The Gaels will be facing off against the Royal Military College Paladins on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Gananoque and District Recreation Centre.
Gibson, who is in his seventh year with Queen's, says this is a great event.
"It doesn't matter if it is an ice hockey game or a road hockey game," he said. "It is a real intense game."
The game also allows Gibson to present a deserving freshman of the Queen's team with a scholarship in the name of Lou Jefferies.
"I was always close to Lou and this is a great way to honour and promote qualities he had," said Gibson.
He said this scholarship goes to the player in most financial need. The recipient must maintain an 80 per cent average prior to university and must maintain a 75 per cent average in order to receive the funding each year. The scholarship is worth $3,500.
"We try to raise that amount at this event," said Gibson. This is the sixth year the Queen's and RMC game has been held here in Gananoque.
"It's a way to give back to the community," he said. "We want kids to come out. It's a family event."
This year's scholarship went to Patrick McEachen of Stouffville, ON. McEachen played last year for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors team of the Ontario Hockey League.
"He is a hard worker," said Gibson of the 20 year-old defenceman. "He takes school very seriously. He was looking at a few schools and what really sold him on Queen's was the quality of the hockey program and secondly the academics. These are traits Lou, and the other scholarship recipients, had."
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. to this event. Admission is $2. There will be a cash bar and silent auction during the game upstairs. After the game there will be entertainment.
